Someone got control of my Gmail account today.
Using it, they managed to take control of my eBay account and my Amazon account.
The thief won a $500 Nokia cellphone on eBay, but used some PayPal account (not mine, thank gawd) to pay for it. Fortunately, I had no active money accounts associated with eBay.
I suspect that the thief may have simply used my eBay account to bolster some seller's stats. Otherwise, I can't see the point of using someone else's account that has no money tied to it.
No damage done on Amazon. I called them directly and they we're very helpful. I can say the same for Netflix, and eBay also. Chatted online with eBay and then they called me at home.
Gmail... pain in the ass. No one to talk to.
Tomorrow, I kill my debit card and my credit card.
I dunno... I'm thinking I just might have dodged a bullet.
We'll see in the next couple of days.
-
Good luck, Hope they get nothing from you.
-
How did you find out?
This is really weird. Generally PayPal purchases will only ship to the address listed on the Paypal account; so I doubt they stole that as well. (Am I right here?) I wonder if it was an account typo because they really have nothing to gain… do they?
Good luck sorting this out.

First thing, was I couldn't access my gmail account either via web or POP.
Then, I noticed that I couldn't log on to eBay.
That's when the panic started to set in.
I started logging into everything I could think of.
My mistake is that I use the gmail account as my "public" account. I use it whenever anyone asks for an email address.
-
I would do such Sandy, but do not expect too much cooperation, as unless they stole the money from you they really will not care.
Make sure you start watching your credit report though. This happened to me 3 years ago and I am still fighting over things that pop up.

What’s wrong with using Gmail? Is it that your messages are always on the server and not on your pc? How are some email addresses/accounts safer than others? Do you think the got your ebay password from your inbox folder?

I have my own domain. I can take control of any email account on there at any time. With any of those accounts, I could have nipped this in the bud quick.

Probably not a good idea. :)

Burn his house down.:t

A friend of mine (Robert) once built a house for someone and that someone never did pay him. So Robert took all the guys personal belongings out of the house and burned it to the ground and he only did six month in prison for it and never did have to pay any money...lol.

If he used USPS could the postal police, whatever they are called, get involved also?
-
This guy might be using that address to forward it to another address. I would call the post office in Tucson and see if they have a forwarding address for that adress. You can start tracking the guy down that way. It isn't a bad idea to do some of the investigating on your own. Just so long as you don't spook your target. This way if you do get a hold of someone there at the Tucson PD that will work the case they will have a good starting point.

This actually falls under the FBI since it involved interstate commerce.. Filing the report was a good first step.
Sandy, I'm surprised TPD took the report since the address sounds like it's in the county. Looking up the thing in yahoo maps shows it way out west on the south side. Unless there has been a massive annexation that's definitely the County and would fall under the Pima County Sheriff's Office. You might want to give them a call and check to see if they can coordinate with TPD to shift the report to them. 520- 741-4600 and 520-547-6911 are the non emergency numbers so you might be able to get info from them regarding it.

You got lucky. Change your PW NOW, and any PW's you may have emailed yourself. make it/them something with at least eight characters in combination of letters and numbers, and make sure that one of those first 3 characters is a number! Then report it to the Feds...
and go over every email you have, or sent to see if there is anything at all with PW's, Accounts info, or other ID theftable things and hardcopy print them before deletion.

Good, and contact the FBI while you're at it. Their number is listed for ID theft, and they do take you seriously regardless of what others may say.
Legal issues aside, it probably was not a good thing that you posted the shipping address. The address sounds like another innocent person being had. Empty house for sale, nobody around to monitor the mail... Oldest form of "Safe Drop" in existence for crooks, drug dealers, and other n'ere do wells. Hell, since it's a cell phone, the FBI might even get DHS, or ICE in on it. All IRS will do is drag their feet for a couple years.
Mav has good advice. Listen to him.
I have to say I'm disappointed in some of the irresponsible replies here, like the "Burn the House down" one. For all you know, the house is more than likely vacant, and has been so for a while. You folks have any concept of how much trouble you can get into just by saying that, and something happens to the house? And do not think for a second that forums, emails and cell phones are not being monitored by the Feds... But you didn't hear it from me either.

But there are a number of squeakers reading the board that may not have a fully developed brain yet. If even one of them "thinks" this is a good idea then well... you get the idea. :D

Just sign him up for the "Deluxe" Package from Nuke's Fake Arizona Grass.
The serenade during installation is punishment enough.
-
That sucks, I hope you get your identity back.
-
you could always do a number search on the web and using his addy and name prolly get his phone number. call him up and have a "nice" chat :O
-
The number's not listed, sadly.
-
That's near Nuke, I beleive
Have him show up with a pile of astroturf to install....maybe he can sick that blue-tongued chow devil on the guy :)
-
sorry to hear that Sandy.
I'm glad I never got into the gmail fevor.
I've had only 2 email addy's since 1992. (Not counting my Yahoo email which has an alias name)
I change my passwords every 30 days..
Funny thing is, I've never had a computer virus either.
Mr. :noid

I wonder how they got access to your gmail account in the first place? How did they get your password?
-
Not a clue.
