May 26th, HB555 and I are going to get together at McClellan and browse the planes. I haven't seen HB555 in person for quite a few years now, and it's a good excuse :)
Anyone in the Sacramento Region want to spend a few hours looking at old planes? They will have flights available as well.
-
I'd make the trip but I'm going to be out of town that weekend. :(
-
You're buying all the beer, right? ;)
-
So far, I'm buying "Both" of the beers lol
Come on up, I'll quench your thirst :D
-
Planning on some whale riding? I hear a couple are headed your way.
-
Headed my way is an understatement, they are exactly 1 block behind me :)

:O
Watch out for cloaked stolen Klingon Birds of Prey!
-
At this particular moment. They keep bouncing around this area, have been here since yesterday. They need to get out of here, they are going to get hungry. People think they are in the river, but actually in the deep water channel. There is a net blocking their access to the turning basin, that large wide spot after the bend.
Pretty kewl :) My daughter and I were on the levee this morning looking for them, they are sneaky, hiding lol didn't think you could hide a whale did you!
Going to ride our bikes on the levee this afternoon and try and get pictures.

The're here. We've had 4 news helipcoptors over our shop allday. The whales are a stones throw away from me right now I'd guess.
... Just noticed. Roc and I are pretty close. I'm right below the green arrow , below the "o" of Sacramento near the water.
-
If things work out I will be out that weekend to visit SunKing with sondog. SunKing I will be calling you.
ROC maybe we can all hook up for lunch/coffee or something. :)
-
Daddog, that would be Great :)
Sunking, my office is just south of Industrial on Enterprise :) I thought you might be at the Port, but looked closer at the map lol You might be :) If so, tell Buddy Linker Hi for me. Of course, he won't know who the heck ROC is.

I'm right across from the docks behind the Fire Dept.
Know where the old Tower Records Warehouse was?
-
Ya, my brother in law worked the warehouse there, my wife worked for Pulse Magazine across the street, behind Towers old main office.
Know the area well :)
-
Let me run this one by the wife. I fear the worst...
"You want to drive where to meet those dorks you play that stupid game with?!?!"
who knows...maybe she'll be happy to get me out of the house.
Well dang...they're going to be right by my work today through the 22nd (Moffett field, I'm in Palo Alto).
Hmmm.
Anyone from around Bay Area want to go check them out? They'll be flying up to Livermore I guess on the 22nd...
-
Tell the Mrs. there is a Brand New Ikea store here in West Sacramento that you just HAVE to go check out! While you're here, you can lose her in the store, slip away for a few beers, and head back in time to "find" her.
Ya, I know there's an Ikea around Palo Alta, but hey, this ones NEW :D

Collings air craft at the Coast Guard hanger, but there is a new museum on the base as well with some great planes.
No airshow though, that I'm aware of.
-
Thanks, I'm hoping to make it.

I pasted this from an e-mail our Ops Group Commander sent out. I am probably going to be there Wed, around lunch time.
Lincoln is about 20 min North of Roseville on 65.
The Collings Foundation will fly their B-17, B-24 and B-25 to the Lincoln Regional Airport, and will have them open for you to tour and even ride in if you desire. These aircraft are probably the best and most historically accurate restored WWII bombers in the world. And they fly! And now, you can see them and touch them.
When:
Tuesday May 22nd 1400hrs - 1700hrs
Wednesday May 23rd 0900hrs – 1700hrs
Thursday May 24th 0900hrs – 1200hrs
Where:
Lincoln regional Airport (Karl harder field) on the General Aviation Ramp
Cost:
Walk through Tours
$10 for adults, $5 for children 12 years and under
30 minute flight experiences:
$425 per person on the B-17 and B-24 , $325/$400 per person on the B-25
-
Wow, you can actually get a flight in one of these old planes. Amazing. I'm nearby, in Davis. The Aerospace museum at McClellan also has a Da Vinci exhibit featuring some interesting models, like the Air Screw. I've been meaning to check out the exhibit and the museum. With the bonus of the Collings Foundation aircraft on hand, I have no excuse for not going. Here are a few useful links.

wow I work about 5 miles from lincoln, and I Live about 15 minutes away...I may have to check that out.
-
I went today and walked through all 3 bombers, even met a B-24 flight engineer who had some interesting pics he took while he was flying.
I never realized how cramped those planes were inside.
-
Are you allowed to take pictures and video inside?

Inside the planes? Yes. Outside too. :)
-
I forgot the video camera, but I took over 50 pics with the digital camera....does the picture hangar still exist...Im not sure how tp upload them.
I'm kicking myself for not bringing the video camera..that would have been cool. My wife actually had a good time walking through the acft, in the B-17 I was pointing out where the actors in the movie Memphis Belle sat..she thought that was cool.
-
hey so is that why a bunch of WW2 planes have been flyin over my house? just yesterday i saw a B-25 flyin of my house :aok

what time u guys meetin ROC?
-
I can get there any time. I just heard from HB555 and he should be leaving Reno about 7am, so that should put him in Sacto between 9am and 10am.
There is a Denny's off I-80 at Watt Ave just north of the exit. That puts us about a mile from the airbase, and a good spot to meet. I'm thinking I'll be there around 9am to start swilling coffee and waiting for everyone to show.
Here is a link to the new museum
http://www.aero-web.org/museums/ca/mcam.htm
The Bombers won't be there, they will be around the corner at the Coast Guard Hanger, but I've been to this one twice. Once at the grand opening and again just a few weeks ago just to burn off a few hours in between meetings.
Not the best part of town, but there are some good restaurants and coffee houses nearby.
Anyone who's coming into the area, PM me and I'll give you my cell phone number.
Here's a link to McClellan, you can zoom out and get directions from this one.
McClellan (http://local.yahoo.com/mapview;_ylt=AndRI6X85Qhzz8gnYPBiTeOHNcIF?stx=McClellan+AFB&fr=&city=Mcclellan&state=CA&zip=95652&qty=9&uzip=95652&country=US&radius=15&fmap=2121728&csz=5934+Price+Ave+Mcclellan%2C+CA+95652&sortby=topresults&begin=1&n=10&ed=RrlIBK160Sz4l2BTgG49NmAjlzOFL.6BACBCT8BOTSjvzU25DkeOaZ2AleixxBGPryM725EbtnMr.Ih3hQIW7z4FGP2.1GU9AzSswmBNksjb9w--)
-
So how long are you hanging out a Denny's before heading to McClellan?
-
Not sure Easy, I'm thinking at the latest, HB555 will get there around 10, and then eat, might be earlier. I'd say at the latest 10:30. But then again, I'll hang out there as long as needed to form up. I'm hoping to get as many as possible together so we can find the place at the same time lol but again, with cell phones, we'd be able to track everyone down. You're about what, 2-1/2 hours out from Sac? You and HB555 probably have the same drive time.
grr link wont work lol
Search Denny's Sacramento, Watt Ave, Ill get a good link.
-
Hard to say with Memorial Day weekend. If all goes well closer to 3 hrs I think. Looking forward to it.
-
:furious :furious work:furious :furious
would love to go, just cant make it. I'm sure you will have some fun-:aok
-
Atoon, would have been fun to meet you.
Guys, I went out this morning to McClellan, they flew in yesterday.
Got to watch em go through their preflights, fire em up, take em all out.
The Coast Guard Hanger is at the end of the runway, north side of the base. Talking to the crew today, they said they'd be open for the walking tours around 10 am. There is a public museum across the street with some great planes, and the Museum store house next to where the bombers are sitting. Speaking with James, a museum docent, he said that we might want to walk over to the Museum warehouse and say we were invited to take a look at the other planes in there ;) Oh ya, we'll just have to try that one, won't we :D
The planes are in fantastic condition, simply breathtaking watching that B17 launch.
See you tomorrow
-
We are going to have to come up with more reasons to get together, that's for sure.
I'm sunburnt, but I think I did manage to get the better end of the deal. I got home I think before HB555 and Easyscor got their A/C cooled off :D
Got some good pictures, my friend Greg here in town snapped off a ton of shots. When he gets them to me, SIM has offered up some serious webspace and I'll get pictures and maybe some video up.
There is only the 1 B24 left flying, couple of B17s and couple of B25s. It was good to see them, times running out on those birds.
Easy found so much wrong with his skin detail that I don't think he'll be poking his head out for a while, he's got Rivets to draw dag nabbit!!!
Very rough conditions, it was hot out there, and hot in the planes. No way to imagine being stuffed in one of those cramped quarters for 8+ hours getting shot at. Different era, people are so convinced we have it so rough today, it's such a shame they don't know Why life is so good for them now.
It was most impressive watching some of the older wifes out there with their husbands who got an opportunity to see inside those things. They came out the other end looking at their frail old men a little differently.
-
When I went to the airport in Lincoln on Wed, I met a B-24 Flight Engineer who brought his family to see the acft. He had some photos and a german newspaper with his pic in it. Apparently he was injured on one of his missions and was grounded for a few days, his acft crashed on a bomb run 2 days after he was grounded with the entire crew lost. The family of one of the crew put up a memorial in the field . Man he had some stories. It's hard to believe how the number of WW2 vets is dropping almost every day.
Isn't the 17 that was on display skiined in the game?
J

Hehe, sounds like a blast!!Too bad you guys are a 2 day drive, 5 hour flight or 2 month by whale away:(
I wanna see some pics of Easy countin rivets Roc . hehe.
Glad you guys had fun:aok
