Hey all,
I've already seen the threads where people have beaten to death the concept of including Korean War era and later jets in Aces High. This thread isn't about that.
I'm assuming that most folks on here, like myself, have a favorite or favorites among the WW2 plane set. For example, I'm definately a huge fan of the P-40 in the early war arena, and the Corsair in the late war arenas.
But, what if Aces High were a jet sim? Instead of our current arenas, we had Korean War, Vietnam War, and Cold War/Modern War arenas.
Where would you hang out the most, and what jet would you fly the most?
I think I would hang out in the Vietnam arena the most and fly coolest plane ever made, which is of course the F-4 Phantom.
I'd take up the Mig 25 Foxbat when I needed a change to the 'bad guys' side.
-
There is no doubt after an initial period, the "modern" arena would be the most populated .
-
funny, seconds after posting this, I had the thought, "I guess it doesn't matter because eventually everyone will be in the modern arena. The SU-27 would, of course, be the modern La-7 equivalent."
Hehe. It was just a random thought I was having while I wait for the work day to end anyway.
-
I'd be in the Korean War in a Corsair :D
-
in the korean war era flying the f51d :)
-
Korean ... flying the Sabre ... the last bastion of true dogfighting jets.
Vietnam ... the A-1 Skyraider ... Four 20mm cannons and 8,000lbs of hardpoint-mounted freefall and/or forward-firing weapons .
-
Would definitely be F-4 and A-4 for fighters and A-6 and A-3 for support and bombing missions. I wondered many times what it would be like to fly them while watching them from in the elephant grass. Always thought it was better than what I was doing.
Later,
KayBay
-
A-1 hands down.
Dont forget tho they could have gun pods.
guns guns guns! yeeHAH!
-
Korea: F-86, MiG-15, F-4Us
Vietnam: F-4, MiG-17, A-1, AC-130 (:D), C-123 (Air America!!!), F-105 (would love to make Wild Weasel missions :) )
Cold War/Modern: F-4, F-104, MiG-17, MiG-21, MiG-25, A-10, Mirages, G.91 (Viva l'Italia! :D), F-15, F-14, F-16, F-18, MiG-29, Su-27 family.... etc, etc....
Did I tell you I'm an aviation fanatic?
EDIT: Oh, yes! How could I have forgotten the Scooter!!! But, IIRC, A-4 was used as an attack aircraft, KayBay, not a fighter! :)
-
I would spend most of my time in Korean because it really is the last era of dogfighting as the missiles grew of age in the Vietnam War. Would fly the F-86 almost exclusively.
-
I'd fly the F-14 and fire Phoenix missiles at all the suckers in the old-era jets from 100 miles away.
Stuff like this is why I don't think it would work. Jet combat just isn't as exciting.
Air Warrior had a Korean arena and it pretty much went ignored by 95% of the user base IIRC.
-
Flying mig21s where ever i would be able to.
-
I like the Vietnam era because the planes still require stick and rudder skills, despite the advent of missles.
Interesting how many folks would still boot up props in the jet world.
-
I'd fly whatever i had just seen on this weeks episode of "Dogfights"
-
hey duh mig21 is perked lol ;)
-
I would "fly" in whichever arena had 1337 SAMs. I would totally pwnzorz all the fiter jockeez furballing and ignoring my requests to drop troops at V47 so we culd win the war....

nuh uh i would buts out my uber sams and blow ur arse in to t3h pieces and then i would fly a b52 and destroy ur crippled remains :)
-
I would be suicide diving formations of b52s into carriers, and mindlessly furballing in Mig 15s, HOing anyone who wouldn't turn.
I wouldn't be that interesting in micromanaging a jet cockpit, but a Korea or Viet Nam era AH flavor might be interesting. Not real sure about the missle thing. I like the idea that people I shoot know I'm there and see it coming. I want them to know they're going to cartoon die.
-
ihub f u hoed me i would fart on u
-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fighters_Anthology
Was one of the first really good online/offline flight sims.
My prediction on the different area arenas would most likely leave everyone in the Modern Arena. The horde loves uber planes and the F-22 is uber enough.
-
I would fly nothin but Korea. In AW i flew sabre for 4 years then tried the mig when they made both available for AZ and BZ land and flew it for 1 year (then AW went Pfffffffft) . Sabre had 1 notch of flaps at 300 Mig 150. Sabre went downhill faster, Mig went uphill faster. Made for some great fights, long ones too. Sabre had 6 50's and mig had 30mm with 2 23mm fer bb's and lots of it. Best of all you could get 4 flights in, in a hour, like I say nothin RTB's like a jet. And fightin jets with air brakes Rules.

ever heard of the Mig-15?
-
I'm aghast that no one has mentioned the baddest of the bad...
F8 Crusader for me, thank you very much.
B58 Hustler for those buffing runs.
-
Definately the F-8 Crusader in Vietnam.
It was the last US fighter where the guns were the primary weapons, it also had a pair of Sidewinders.
Navy pilots used to say of their ride, "When you're out of Crusaders, you are out of fighters!"
Now how can you argue with that?
-Llama
-
Hmmm Korean war would be a toss up between the F-86 or the F-9F Panther
Vietnam would be the F-8 Crusader or the F-105 Thunder Chief
Modern, either the F-16 or the F/A-18
-
Korea in the Sabre, or 'Nam in the Phantom.

um whats that gotta do with it.... f51D was a seperate plane...
-
Jet combat, where the men are men and auger proxies are numerous!
:rofl
-
Id be in a SAM battery starring at the radarscreen.... prolly next door to an LTAR sam camp
-
I would up the F-14 tomcat and just fly over friendly bases requesting a fly by repeatedly. Sometimes I would say "talk to me goose", and if anyone came up behind me I'd hit the brakes and they would fly right by....If I ever did shoot anyone I'd say "Jesters dead". If there was no F-14, I'd probably fly The A-10 and HO everyone with my giant cannon of death.

If you have time to download 278mb and enjoy WW2 FPS shooters and you clearly enjoy Top Gun - Enjoy!

Speaking of modern day Fast Jet sims, anyone here play Lock-On ?
I play it from time to time and it’s a completely different style of combat.
The online community is very small, and it doesn’t have the scope of Aces High 2. But boy does it get your heart going when your buzzing the deck trying to evade missiles.
Heres a few screens of me flying.

Yeah, that's me with my whole nose cone blown off.

Am completely uninterested in jets. Would not spend any time in any non-WWII arenas or in jet rides.
-
I have Lock On Flaming cliffs, Kazaa, but I rarely play it, and I think I've never been online... the matter is, there are too many commands to learn, for someone who has a real life! :D

If you had some time set aside to read the manual, I’m sure you would be able to get a few commands down.

The matter is that it takes some time to set a good profile for the stick (X52), you have to memorize the commands.... AH already absorb a great part of my free time, another big part went to IL2 (not playing it anymore, too) and I have few left for Lock On.... and maybe I'll have to cut AH, too, in the near future, for a big while.... RL needs more attention. :)

What about WWI? Spads, Camels, Fokkers, Albatrosses, Nieports, SE5A's, Pfalz's, Bertha's, Ballons, . . .
-
Anybody notice the biggest problem here? It would be a mass of US aircraft shooting at US aircraft with the rare Russian aircraft thrown in.
In otherwords, practicaly no variety.
-
You'd find me either in the Korean War arena flying an A-26
or
You'd find me in the Vietnam War arena flying an A-26.
(or maybe an 0-2 with rockets :) )
-
Korea, the F-86 or one of the Navy Jets.
Viet Nam, the F-105 or A-4 Skyhawk, or A-6 Intruder
Modern, the A-10 Thunderbolt

Well, variety doesn't necessarly mean that aircrafts have to come from many nations... and don't forget that (large brush, here), after WWII, the mainstream of military airplanes was built in US and USSR, with UK and France being the only 2 other nations to build successful military aircrafts. So, I don't think the problem is that big or that far from historical reality... ;)

If they go 'forward', they should definitely go 'back' too, and also have a combined area, so a flock of Sopwith Camels could confuse GV missile lock by turning off their engines, or something...
I'd welcome both Korean and WW1 era arenas, but no later than Korea, as many have pointed out, missile combat makes it a different dogfight altogether, although it would be nice to fly the Tempest without spending perks.
The Temp would be pretty good against the Migs and Sabres...

Well, that JAS has serious problems with FBW. I think it's grounded right now...
-
Wouldn't work. Theres already enough "good" jet sims out there.

Who points out that there seems to be issues when one tries to model MMOG flight sims where the aircraft exceed @ 600 with the current typical internet latency.
I am working on fixing the internet if someone could please start on the sim :)

Eheheh, as I said, large brush in depicting that frame... yes, Sweden is another country that manifactured relevant planes for the Cold War/Modern era, thanks for the correction. :)
Carls, now that you're over 100 posts, I hope you'll stop spamming the forum, you tard! :D
Morpheus, is there some mod that allow players to fly the 'Cat in Lock on, or in that last screenshots there are only AI planes?
-
you can fly all the planes in lockon simply by editing the MEINIT file. Change human cockpit to "yes" rather than no. From there you can mod the cockpits if you really want to get involved to look like the actual plane you are flying.
-
Wow, didn't know that, thanks! :)
