I lived in Albany (actually Guilderland just outside of Albany) for several years.  Spent a lot of time in Saratoga.  I really miss it up there.  Nice country.  I miss the Saratoga race track, Lake George, the White Mountains of Vermont, Manhattan...

Great place to live.

Wasn't towards me, but yeah, I've been there, Treize.  It's one of the places kids from Crown Point go to escape Crown Point :D

...  Lake George though...  Now THAT is a crazy sight.  For probably 15 years every time I went to Crown Point I'd take 91 to 103 in VT to 7 to 4 to 22, etc., and basically immerse myself in the thought that the place is in the middle of nowhere.

Then I take 87 up one time, drive through Lake George and am seeing a million neon lights everywhere.  It's an oasis in the middle of nowhere.

Also...  Anyone ever been to Saratoga Springs?  Nice little bar scene there.

I also live in queens, but have been all over the state..

It's like night and day, comparing the city to upstate.  Upstate is so much more peacefull.

Yes.  My wife at the time always liked going out for a weekend drive and we covered just about everything there is to cover up there.  Thats another nice area but I've really only driven through a couple of times.

Vudak... you're talking about Lake George City... stay away :)  We'd always drive up to the north end of the lake, rent a boat from Dockside Marina and go tooling around the lake.  Can't remember the name of the Marina on the west side just south of the islands but that was always a great place to stop for a cocktail or two and maybe a burger and catch the inevitable weekend blue band playing on the deck.

I also liked to go to Zwicklebauers Hoffrauhouse (sp) on Warner Lake in the Heldebergs (25 minute drive from home).  Great German food and they had a deal where you could buy an ice bucket with 4 Becks in it... perfect for an afternoon lounging in the sun on the deck.

BTW, I said White Mountains of Vermont in my first post... my mistake... White Mountains are in New Hampshire, Green Mountains are in Vermont.  Both are nice.

Hi,

I'm downstate pretty close to Orange County Choppers (no, not dentures).

I trained up there as a Navy Seabee with the 10th Mountaineering Division February 1978 and berthed in the old WWII wooden barracks then.  Winter combat maneuvers at 20 below zero.  It snowed everyday I was there.  It was fun, though.  I bet they tore down those old barracks prior to the 1st Iraq war.

Wonder if any of the active duty aviation guys here ever did S.E.R.E. up to Rangeley, Maine ?

I've tramped around in the High Peaks near Keene Valley.  I miss the days when military aircraft were still allowed to do maneuvers back in the wilderness areas.  I was up on Nubble when an A-10 came in the valley below me.

Grew up on South Hero Island.  Live in Saratoga now, but have sheltered my boat in Willsboro many times.  Nothing like the South wind blowing up Champlain.  Gets like the ocean out there at times.

Hi again,

A few years back, 1989 I think, to Geneseo is a flight museum that includes B-17 stuff.  They used to have fly-ins specific to the B-17.  I don't know if it is still there.  That's west of Syracuse, just north of Letchworth State Park.

The National Air Museum at Geneseo lost their lease on the airfield several years ago (I think it was '99) and relocated to Elmira. They have since, AFAIK, closed their doors. Their B-17 "Fuddy Duddy" is on-loan to (again, I think, going from memory after getting home from work here) The Collings Foundation.

BTW, Dr. Bill Anderson crashed the P-40E he had based at Geneseo a while back as well and sold the wreckage. I don't know the specifics, but I heard a rumor thats its been repaired and is back in the air.

There has been talk several times over the years of starting a new museum at the Genseo Airfield and having the "Wings of Eagles" airshow return there, but the rumors never amount to anything.

Daubie they still use the barracks. There is a housing shortage so they put the National Guards in them for their 6 months training prior to sending to Iraq. They have modernized them with new furnaces and AC.
