I read in the other thread you went with Borla. I had that cat-back on my last Camaro ('96 3.8) and loved it except for the large tips, I can't tell you how many times I scraped them on an incline.
I'm still undecided yet; Borla or Corsa. The only reason why I haven't gone with Corsa is the quality control issue they've been having lately. I almost broke down and went with a GMMG last weekend...I'm glad I didn't. One of my front gfx spoilers broke off last Sunday and I'm having it repaired and both front spoilers repainted. After those get repaired and repainted I'll look at getting a new cat-back. Back to square one; Borla or Corsa.

I think I'll get a set of Pacesetter headers and probably a Flowmaster catback setup for my Firebird. My buddy runs NitroPlate, THE exhaust coating company, so I'm going to have them coat the stuff. I was thinking about getting some sort of high flow cat, but I can't find the sort of information on them I'd like. I have a junk yard buddy trying to score a 3.73 posi for me.
I know EXACTLY what you mean about inclines. My Firebird was a year old when I bought it, and it had the ground effects crap on the front. With all the inclined driveways with gutters like tank traps around here, the front of the car looked like crap in 6 months, with big yellow scrapes showing through the black. I took the ground effects air dam off the front. Now I have a Trans Am front bumper cover without the air dam, since my wife decided to drive under the back of a Ford Exploder and do $2500 worth of damage. The damned thing is NOT lowered at all, and it still drags everywhere. I'd LIKE to lower it an inch and a half with a set of Eibach springs, and really set the suspension up for SCCA events, but I can't drive it on the road around here if I do. I lust after the springs, a set of Bilstiens, a new set of sway bars, and a set of urethane bushings. That'd really make the 16 x 9.5 Corvette wheels and 265/50/16 Falkens work well. I guess I'll have to leave it alone and work on my Corvair Corsa if I want to play SCCA racer.

Man i wanted to get a Corsa so bad, but the quality issue and heard it's much heavier made my mind up for me. still was having second thoughts while waiting at MTI until they cranked it up. Can't wait to get the cam installed. Might have to put a plate in and get an electric cut out then.
My friend has the GMMG and it's to quite, sounds good but no angry sound at idle. I got the Magnaflow first only cause it was a great deal from ICON. sounds good, great price and all Stainless, muffler looks great from behind. Just not the same sound as the Borla.
My vote is Borla all the way.
-
Well, I'm still on the fence.
Just so you know Virgil the Flowmasters get high marks for cost but are the lowest flowing cat-back system out there. You may want to just get a Magnaflow or step up to Corsa/Borla/GMMG. I just can't imagine lowering my car AND getting longtubes after going through what I went with the Borla tips. Good luck with that!
And now G Force is have a complete exhaust sale; Kooks 1 7/8th Longtube Headers, Kooks 3" Catted Y-Pipe, and Installation - $1,811 (Savings of more than $350). I am really fighting myself to not take advantage of that deal and have them put on a Magnaflow at the same time. But then again my engine is completely stock and can't justify spending that kind of money on a kickass exhaust system. Who knows, I just may do it anyway.
C-HOG deserves it.
I'll decide after my front spoilers are done. Hopefully that G Force sale well still be good.

Heh, we should have an Aces High F-body meet in Dallas sometime. Get Eagl to bring is Trans Am.
-
I officially have not the first effing clue what you gents are talking about.
Carry on.
-
The Firebird is just a V6 daily driver, so cost is a serious factor. It'll never be fast, I just want to wake it up a little. It couldn't use a high dollar exhaust system anyway, there just ain't enough there. Maybe in another 150K miles, when the engine is tired, I'll pull it and port the heads, cam it up, put a set of roller rockers on it, and blueprint it. I've had it 7 years, so I figure after another 7 I'll do the engine. If my wife doesn't total it before then.
-
I completely understand that. I was the same way with my 3.8. Only reason I had the Borla on it was my boss at that time bought if for me.
-
I'm not so up on the later GM V-6's, but i've heard that they like a little bit of back pressure, So they keep a little torque balance. But, I've only heard that. That might be why the flowmasters' have a little restriction.
-
I was talking about the Flowmasters in context of the LS1 V8.
-
after i took off my stock LS1 catback my friend put it on his V6 daily driver and it sounded good, might want to look for one.
as for lowering i have the eibach pro kit which i think is enough for any car in Houston (roads suck here). I wanted to get the sport lines but the way my headers and y-pipe hang not a good option for a DD. I also don't have the RS option on mine
-
I really didn't have a choice with the SAP package on mine. After my '96 got totalled last September I spent 9 days sitting in my chair and in pain surfing the internet trying to find a replacement. Houston is rediculous when it comes to F-bodies. Either complete trailer queens and high prices or modded to hell and not very appealing because of that. I had to go to San Antonio to find my Z and not a thing had been modded on it by the previous owner. I really didn't like the SAP package on other Camaros but I've grown fond of it on mine. That's why I had the front spoilers taken off for repair.
-
My brother has been looking for a T/A and having the same problem. When the new camaro comes out i'm going to look for a white SS to go with my Z28. figure there should be some good trade in's or personal sales.
-
Yeah, my '96 was white. My favorite color. NBM was my #2 choice so when I found this one in San Antonio I jumped on it. But that's a whole different thread.

"Let me tell you what Melba Toast is packin' here alright?!!" :noid

I have flowmasters on my vette.. I'm quite pleased w/ the sound and HP/TQ.
-
On your vintage Corvette I am sure they are very good. However, on LS1 F-body's their are inferior to the other cat-backs.
-
my friend works at G-force said they've seen cars loose hp with flowmaster over the stock catback on LS-1's.
-
Speaking of, I just sent a PM to Mike at G Force to see if he can do a mod on a Magnaflow cat-back for me. If he can do it then I will have it done.

Maybe, but I'm putting 430 to the pavement(before the sauce) so it needs to breathe a bit more than a stock LS1.
I wasn't clear though, I have flowmasters but no cats so I do not technically have a "cat back".
I looked into them before I did major mods. Corsas and Magnaflows are nice but I prefer the sound of the 2 chamber flowmasters. Really, it's just a personal preference. I would not believe that the difference between them is all that significant. From what I understand, you can't get the most out of any catback until you get a good set of headers and a nice free breathing cat(s)
-
Yeah, on other applications the Flowmasters are quite good. That's why you see a majority of trucks and other cars with Flowmasters. For some reason they didn't engineer their LS1 F-body cat-back with a high flow rate in mind.

Well, that was silly of them(IMHO), considering all the LS1's out there and the potential they have for mods.

i've had a cut out on stock exhaust, hooker headers & hooker off road y-pipe (no cats) with magnaflow, and the same headers with same y-pipe with Borla open plate and the finale combo is off the fing cain. the only way to go, optimal flow especialy on the big end. flow master has earned the name flow disaster.
-
Maybe for cat backs, I can't say. The mufflers work nicely for me.
Do you have any flow numbers for the systems? Have you ever actually used Flowmasters and had problems?
-
it sounded good on my truck but felt like a dog(flowmaster). i just didn't want to drop 800 for ona n exhuast for a 8 year old truck. I'll look for the numbers but it's been proven plenty of times it's just a noise maker on a LS1, not even a good one at that.

Hmm what make of truck.
Have 50 series FM on my R/T Dakota sounds great and doesn't feel doggish at all.

it was an 89 chevy 1500 with the 350, that was installed in 97. like i said sound good/great just no performance gain what so ever but that truck has long been gone.
i said the FM catback sucks but meant to say replacement muffler, don't think they make a full cat back. again for LS1's no, for new trucks maybe their ok but i wouldn't waste the money for for an LS1 when there are much better stainless steel systems to choose from. my friends shop won't even sale them unless you just have to have it which they'll just recomend you to a local muffler shop.
Best flowing for an LS1 is actaully the Hooker Arrow Chamber, not expensive but doesn't have the nasty sound the Borla or Corsa does.
Maganflow and Mufflex are also two others that flow great and are decently priced.
The SLP loudmouth is just that loud, not a big fan of that one. And another one my friends shop tries to steer people away from.
Borla is the way to go, It's adjustable, flows, the sounds great and it has a million mile warranty.
This looks like an LS1tech thread

Well, sorta. We need a bit more cursing and mind numbingly bad grammar/spelling with a lot more 1337 speak tossed in.
-
I'm still thinking about a catback replacement, but I really don't want anything loud and all the ads and testimonials all talk about how great they sound, blah blah. I don't really care how it sounds as long as it is quiet and flows better than stock...
I did just a muffler swap and it's too loud... It's a POS flowmaster muffler that flows better than the stock muffler but it drones at freeway speeds and it's rusting out due to driving on salt for 2 winters so I wouldn't mind a total catback swapout if I can find one that isn't too expensive and which is as quiet as possible.
-
Here ya go eagl.
A plethora of sounds. (http://www.ls1sounds.com/)
-
Thx for the link. Unfortunately it doesn't really help much :) It's hard to judge how much the exhausts will drone. If I was looking for a particular sound to the exhaust, that site would be perfect. But I don't really care what it sounds like as long as it's quiet and flows better than stock.
I emailed the site owner to see if he has any suggestions. I'm leaning a bit towards just getting a non-flattened y-pipe, borla catback, and a cutout I can remove at the track, and hoping for the best...
-
I know what you mean. There are some vids in there from within the car so you can get an idea how loud/quiet they are under normal cruising speed.
I am looking at a Magnaflow with custom tips but am having problems finding someone to do the custom tips. The search continues...

Hooker Arrow Chamber, best flowing for an LS1. Plus not loud unitl Wide Open throttle
Also, anyone have a hook up on Fikse wheels. had a dog run in front of my car last night and destroyed two wheels.
-
That dog made of concrete about 5 inches high? :)
Thx for the exhaust suggestion. I'll definately look at it.
