I had been happily plugging along for the last year in my F6F Hellcat.
Lately tho I had tired of folks just out running me so in a quest for new rides I tried out the F4u1a on Sunday ..WOW
It is like a superhero !!!
It is not quite as rock steady stable as my old cat but she seems fast and turns quite well!
the visibility out the back is a little poor in comparison but I am getting used to it.
I had 38 kills in my cat going into the change and racked up 50 in one afternoon in the corsair!
I tried the f4u-1 and that one i cant seem to keep in the air.
conclusion ..I'm kinda sweet on the F4u 1a now:D ..still no cupholder tho:confused:
does anyone burn the wing tanks in this bird first or do ya'll let them go in the auto order which is last?
-
If you decide to burn wing tanks, burn the left first. Switching back to auto will burn the right wing.
don't give up on the -1. It's a surprisingly nimble bird when you get the feel.
-
Burn left wing, empty or near empty. Leave alittle more in right wing. it helps compensate for left wing drop tendancy in stalls.

My personal fuel procedures:
First, I figure how far I'm going. Less than a sector generally 50%, a sector or more I take 75%. Don't take a drop tank unless you're going far enough even 100% internal won't do, as the pylon will reduce your top speed slightly even after the tank is released.
I always burn the left wing down to ~1/8, then burn the right wing down to about the same. If I'm going far enough, I've usually got them both burned down before I reach the target (my flight profile generally involves a climb to 15k). From there switch over to main tank until dry. Use your wings as a reserve and disengage when you're down to a little more than 1/8 main. 1/8 all tanks should get you a little more than a sector on cruise settings.
F4U-1A is a MARVELOUS aircraft. You basically take the good points of the 1 and 1D (excluding bomb load) and blend them together. IMO she's the best pure fighter of the 1-series Hogs and in the right hands one of the best non-perked birds in the game. She's not the monster the -4 is, but then what IS?

excellent information.. thank you very much:)
no cupholder, but at least she's blue;)

Plummr knows that a -1 can kick butt to, hehehehe.

Don't fly the F4U-4!
Your head would probably explode.
Whew, saved a life.
