SHould arrive in 7-10 days.
Want to guess what it is?
I'll post a picture once it arrives.
Also, I'll be in the background of the Pay per view Comcast viewing of the Comcast/Competitive edge Football Combine College scout try outs in about a week. Finished a shoot there today. The Comcast folks had cameras going all over the place, and you'll see me in the background of a few scenes, shooting photography. (Red long sleeve underarmor shirt bulging with muscle with black vest and a beige BB cap :D )

A nice zoom lens big enough to fire an ack shell out of?
-
A tripod!
-
No to tripod (have 3)
No to lens (I have 4)
That should narrow it down significantly! :)
Clue: Costs as much as a good lens....
-
A photographer!!!!

That's what I use. EOS Rebel XT. Saw you can now get it with extra lens 50mm-300mm or so for $799 at BestBuy... :cry :cry That's the same price I paid 18 months ago just for the farggin camera itself. :O

Photography classes?

Like a hundred disposable funcams!

Another clue:

Synchronized flash gun?
-
The title is misleading. It should have been:
"Bought a new photography toy".
That is a picture of a shutter button.
-
D200, so what?
-
strobes.

I'm still into max results for the money with max convenience, so I'm getting hot for the $350 Canon Power Shot SD800 IS Digital Elph pocket camera featuring:
wide 28-105 (3.8x) zoom,
2.5-inch viewing screen,
7.1 megapixels,
DIGIC III Image Processor (including
Face Detection Technology [face auto focus],
Red Eye Correction,
ISO 80 to 1600), and
Optical Image Stabilizer
[sharper and about 4 more f stops without flash or tripod]).
The technology just keeps getting more and more remarkable.
Google Canon for more details. Canon SD200 and SD400 have been favorites. I always hold out until enough new goodies compel me to upgrade, and I think the SD800 is just about inevitable for me soon.
-
The Elphs are fantastic, and the form factor means you're about 10x more likely to have it with you when something unexpected and photographic happens.
-
Exactly, Chairboy. I've taken more photos with the Elphs than all the other cameras I've ever had combined.
And with a little attention to composition and lighting, the Elph photos most of the time are as good as any I've taken with more "professional" equipment. The biggest challenge is adapting to the slightly slower response times than are available with top full-size cameras.
From learning the hard way, I do recommend the nice leather camera bag to wear on a belt. And making it a habit to always slip the camera cord around a wrist while taking it out of the case.
Meaning that after a long tiring day shooting bunches and bunches of stuff, I once somehow managed to drop an SD200 on to pavement.
Good news is that got me a refurb SD400 from Canon for less money that it would have cost to fix the cracked viewing screen and other damage.
-
This gives me the flexibility of having the D70s with a short range lens around my neck for the close shots, while using the D200 with the telephoto lens. I think my eyes are starting to slant just a tad....

Man, this board could use a separate forum just to talk about all of Ripsnort’s new stuff…

I'm just turning all the profit I make back into the business this first year. :)

Mmmm, saw the Canon Power Shot SD800 IS Digital Elph today. Prefer the ergonomics of my SD400. Battery and photo card changed, so don't want to have to buy new extra battery or new photo card either.
So I think I stay with SD400 until maybe the next new batch of bells and whistles. Need a LOT of justification to blow $400 on only incremental improvements.
-
I've currently got an SD450 and an SD600, and they use the same battery. It's awful handy because of redundant chargers/batteries. Bummer to hear that they changed, the newest stuff w/ the image stabilization sure looks nice.
-
Yeah it does. My SD400 is still a miracle to me even realizing better tools are out there. I want the new goodies, but I'm so spoiled by technology I'm gonna wait a bit longer to upgrade.

Rip, you should lookup your local martial arts/grappling tournaments.
* Not a cheap pursuit. Hell I pay $85/mo for 2 classes a week.
* Never seen a real photographer at one.
* The action is all of 5 feet away, and stays there.
* You're inside (yay air-conditioning!)
* It's year-round.
Could probably make a killing there, especially with the parents.

Good thoughts Indy...just happens there is a MA place just down the road too. I'll stop in there sometime and offer my services for tournaments and/or portrait photography. Do they ever "do" portraits for MA clubs???

Uhm... depends. What you want to find is a "McDojo". Fun, fitness, & self-defense. That kind of place. If they test for belts, it'd be a good place to setup business with. You know they'll have gatherings, tournaments, etc. Most of these places don't even actually teach legit self-defense, but for you, it's a good demographic to work. The kids division at any type of tournament could also work well for you. TKD, Karate, grappling, etc. The key is the frequency of them. iirc, there was 4 or 5 grappling tournaments just last month here in Texas.
"Fight" gyms (I train @ one), probably wouldn't do you too well unless they have children's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes or something to that effect. Wrong target audience unless you're actually at a tournament, taking a pic while they're winning. These are a much smaller minority than the number of McDojos out there though.
Avoid any "Ninja" school. Those people are on crack.
I'd have jumped on it already... but I'm a crappy photographer. :(

Everytime I need a reminder of what a crappy photographer I am, I just go to links like Fred Miranda (referenced in a post by Jigsaw today) . Damn, some of those guys are just talent-stricken!
The key is to look for ways to improve upon and attempt to learn something new every time you go out and shoot.
