Ok, saw this:
Helmet Boxing (http://wcbstv.com/topstories/local_story_141174014.html)
At the end of the video the dude wonders if its the further erosion of teenage youth.
Is it just me or was it not too long ago that the only thing parents and thus op-ed pieces such as this one were concerned with was getting kids INTO helmets? Wear one for this, wear one for that. Gotta take a crap? Wear your helmet, you could give yourself a concussion.
Kids take a sport that has been around longer than English and they finally put on helmets and suddenly theres a new source for concern??? Next backyard wrestling starts using Nerf and they'd get upset that someone might get a particle lodged in their throat.
In the same spirit I'd like to propose knee pads for porn stars. They're setting such a bad example. You could put someones eye....Some kid could watch them and get hurt trying that.

Geez I did more stupid stuff than that growing up and I'm fine....mostly. BB gun wars, doing crazy stuff on my BMX bike (never wore a helmet), riding mortocycles (again never wore a helmet), skateboarding (no helmet) car surfing, cliff diving, you name it.
I swear, people now a days are so worried about about kids getting a little bump or cut that they wont even let kids be kids anymore. My ex wife is that way and pisses me off. My daughter had a martial arts sparring tournament Saturday and she got popped in the face. Her nose started bleeding and my ex freaked out. My daughter got pissed and I wiped the blood off her face and sent her back into the ring. She ended up losing her match but she got a few good pops in herself. If my ex would have had her way my daughter would have went to the ER. I was like, big deal...it's a bloody nose, get back in there and finish the fight. I'm glad she's a daddy's girl. She hung tough and didn't quit. I was proud of her. She was proud of herself, and her instructors were proud of her. My ex was on the verge of tears because my daughter was bleeding. I don't get it.
I expect my kids to get bumps, bruises, cuts, scrapes, and when it happens, I'll clean em up and send em right back out. They're kids, they'll heal, and maybe they'll learn a little something in the process. My ex thinks that makes me a bad father and that I don't care, I just think I'm being realistic about my kids.

PERK THE HELMETS!
Seriously, they should do this without gloves :D
-
This was what every single practice, warm up, and hockey game used to look like when I was a kid. What's the problem again?
-
kids are such wimps today... They put on their helmets and beg for someone to save em from "man made global warming".
lazs
-
not all kids, the mexicans, central and southamericans that are taking over the country in the reconquista are rockwell scale hardened.
-
They would probably be better off without the helmet and gloves. They wouldnt take as many hits and pain would tell them when to quit. Like that doc said, concussion is the biggest risk.

My son fouled a pitch off his thumb about a month ago at his baseball practice. His thumb opened up like a peeled banana and x-rays later confirmed it was broken.
The emails I got from his coaches were quite paniced because they were concerned I'd sue or something.
I just wrote back and said "Injuries happen".
His nail has almost fallen off now and he was back at practice last night.

good for you curval. that's the way it should be.

hehe...thanks guys. I'm going to show him this thread and your comments.
When it happened I honestly didn't think it was that serious. Sure there was alot of blood but it didn't "look" broken at the time. I just kept saying "Come on...tough it out, you'll be fine." He never even cried a tear (until he got home and his mother said "My poor baby...what happened to you?"...THEN he cried). He didn't want to cry in front of his team and his coaches.
He was nervous about practice last night, although he never said anything to me about it, only his mother, He didn't do very well back in the batters cage, but he did get back in there and face his fear. I'm proud of him for that.

If he uses aluminum, (I hope he doesn't) have him switch to wood while the thumb is healing.. less sting/vibration.
