Title: Gun sights.
Post by: mensa180 on May 26, 2007, 02:59:59 PM
I wish that a few guys who have some great gun sights could pull them together and send the whole bunch to HTC for their "Gun Sight Gallery" to get it started.
Just a wish.

I've got about 300 of them if HTC wants them.  From Waffle's to Fruda to a bunch of others, just a thought....

LOL at the sight.

I still can't figure out how to change the color of the gun sites. I can only make them green or yellow. I WANT BLUE and RED!!!!

Not sure if I can just 'send' them in.  THink I would need the higher up's permission to send them in and let them put them up.  Also, kind of up to the 'makers' of the sights to say okay, I.E. Waffle, Aero, Mitsu, etc. to say it is cool with them....

Yeah I meant, if this were to be "Okayed" then you should send them in.

Reading back I realize that might have been hard to get without knowing what I was thinking at the time, lol.

I'd still like to see the size of gun sights corrected. Some of the historical sights are very difficult to use because the aircraft displays the sights as too small (proven with scale testing!).

Saxman from what I've seen most of the gunsight size problems are with the F4u's.

So why not take the same sight, and size them appropriately for the plane? Label them according to what plane they belong to?

Heck if you did it right you'd probably get some Attaboys & WTGS from others wanting the sights.

I'm sure it went on the list of things to fix someday, but its a big list and HT & staff have a LOT to do.

Ghost: As has been said previously in other threads the sights can't be enlarged any further as they're at the max size (256x256) already. The only way to fix would be to change how the sight is "projected" in a given aircraft.

In the case of the full Mk8 sight (with extended cross hair, not the version that just consists of the rings), for it to appear correct in the F4Us in the way you describe, the sight would need to be made 512x512 because it already fills the entire 256x256 image. Trust me, I've already tried. All I get is a big white nothing if I make it that big.

http://www.irfanview.com

Its freeware graphics viewer program with a ton of cool features, very tightly coded. (small, NOT bloatware)
What it doesn't do is create from scratch, use paint for that.

Load the sight, image, edit palatte, change it to whatever you like, and save.

I've had my best luck with a blue/green dot.

The problem with gunsights is that the same sight appears diffrent, in diffrent planes.  In an A6M the same sight calebrated for  a D200 shot in a P-51 will be calibrated to a D400 shot when viewed in that A6M.

I make my own sights with Paint, and have to do extensive testing both offline and on, to get them to where I'm happy with the sight picture, and calibrated to my prefered shooting convergance.

FW's look different than 109's, F4U's look diffrent than F6F's, every model line has a diffrent sight picture.  On some planes a horizontal bar is just thin enough to dissappear yet on some planes it is to thick.  It is a nightmare.  No one sight can do it all, except maybe a single dot like the one above.

Oh yeah, I know what you mean I have a USN gunsight that displays like a micro machine (talkin' bout the mid to late 1980s minature toy vehicles) should be using it. :lol

That's the one...  LTARKils is wicked accurate with an osti..  I don't understand why he won't tell me his secret....

Page up + f10 for all views in an osti, aim with your tracers, and have lots and lots of practice.  Simple as that.  Some guys like to do the mouse cursor trick but I find the tracers work just fine.

The hardest part of this is learning to judge the distance of the drop of your round shooting at a guy that is 3k out...

Agreed sketch, and heres the thing.  Most people in the game eiter don't know, or don't believe that the osti is effective out to those ranges.  I have actually had guys tell me to stop shooting at planes that are 1.5 out because im wasting ammo.  This is actually a good thing though, because most guys in AC will pay you no mind if they don't have icon on YOU.  A plane that is lazily circling your field at 2k out is great practice for long range gunnery.  Also, shoot at buff formations from way out, there is a lot there to hit so people can get a feel for the range.  Another tip,  If an nme passes over you and egress straight out and up without jinking because they think you are out of range aim a good bit high on that same heading and just hold the trigger down and wait for them to fly into the stream.  It's not a high odds shot by far due to the 37mm's rate of fire, but if you don't shoot at em, your not gonna hit em.

In an Osti...
1.open up at 2.5 K with a slight compensation for drop (aim high)
2.Allow plane to meet stream of 37 mm projectiles (about 1K ish)
3.Watch wing separate from A/C (I've perfected aiming for wingroots now..forget the nose..if you hit nose, the SOB gets a few rounds into your glass gunpit as he dies)
3.Allow 1 "son of a b#$#@ " on 200 or PM.

I've learned to use the sight, and actually like it better than the F10 trick i started with.... though, that's what tought me the drop.

I've hit buffs out past 3k... and once... hit a spit at 1K with a single round fired. (he was obiting looking down at me radio'n GV's)  Been trying to duplicate that for 5 months now.
