All racing is fun if all have similar equipment.

Looks like fun and probably cheap also.

The footage of the Ocean 60's planning the Southern Ocean is just mental. That takes a seriously big pair. And the pictures from the top of the mast...Jesus H.

I've done some mental watermelon in boats over the years, but nothing like that.

Dano, I worked for a software firm that made nav software for ships.  The USCG used our stuff as does the USN.  I used to work on the tech line helping fisherman, racers, cruisers and the sort setup and get their nav stations working.

LePaul, I used to work at an Office Depot in Kemah, Texas that had a large amount of shrimpers/fish boats that would come in to buy laptops for their GPS systems.  Also, the wireless keyboard with the 30' range was very popular, can't remember the name of it now.

I must confess I am by FAR more impressed with that.
Then a bunch of rednecks driving around in circles in the same direction for several hours

You must know Steve from SeaTech systems

He sold laptops and pre-installed our software & charts for customers of his.  He made some nice systems, he made us a few laptops and they were beasts!

Yeah the sailboat racing is cool but remember those guys do that for sport, and when they get into trouble it's these guys that go out and save their butts because it's their JOB!!!!

Thanks for your service Hornet. I've witnessed some pretty hairy situations in my short sailing career. I also have a lot of friends who fish and crab in Alaska as well so I know first hand what you speak of.
Although, I have had some bad experiences with the coasties and customs here in the Pac NW. I was once boarded in horrible conditions, which I thought was a bit irrational. They also bug the watermelon out of us for racing too close to the local port and tankers.
All in all though, watermelon does hit the fan out there from time to time, and it is nice to know someone has our backs. Thanks again.
