"The Hellcat was an even better plane than the Wildcat.  During the Battle of the Marianas in June, 1944, one Hellcat squadron shot down 177 Japanese planes within two weeks without losing a plane.  They earlier had shot down 10 enemy aircraft, so their squadron leader, Cmdr. William A. Dean, wired home the following message, referring to Japanese Prime Minister Hideki Tojo:

'Tojo say Roy Grumman Public Enemy No. 1. Score 187 to 0 not good for Honorable Sons.''

To which company founder Leroy Grumman replied: 'Grumman Men and Women say Bill Dean Grumman Company's No. 1 worst customer. Score 187 to 0 not good for their business.'"
