You can see from the previous three posters that have replied, that some of our community still haven't learned common courtesy. They would rather belittle you than help.
As far as a modern Flightsim that is a free download? I have looked and there isn't one that even can be considered in the same arena as Aces High. Others might know, but from what I have seen, any of the others are more of an arcade than a flightsim. There are good ones out there but none meet all your criteria.
Good luck on your search, but Aces High is the best your going to find. :aok

Guess you have to stick to LockOn LAN-play until some programmers find back to the roots of simulations and abandon their work on the bazillionsth MMORPG hack´n´collect b***sh** which only caters to the needs of the 12year old squeeker-crowd.
I miss the times where dev-teams like MICROPROSE, SSI or SPECTRUM HOLOBYTE released military sims on a regular basis.

Its basicly LOMAC or Wings over Europe, both boxed sims not arena play.
There really hasn't been a good modern era sim that you could arena play.
Balance is simply impossible to achieve with jets and fire and forget missles.
Myself I started flying A10 Cuba over Kali, and the vast majority of the good match's were guns only, no missles allowed. You fly hard to get a guns solution and a good one in order to get a clean kill.
WWII era planes are simply much much easier to work with.
However I agree with Harpoon that there used to be a lot of good military sims out there. There simply isn't much to choose from anymore.

A WWII sim such as AH is much better than any sim with modern a/c ever since it is not fun at all to shoot down somebody with a heat seeker and make a sparingly usage of the artillery these aircraft have, it would be a nightmare shooting down a match 3 a/c using cannons :( and to instantly black out at the slightest pull or even whisper to you joystick at that speed. It's just my opinion though modern a/c such as the F-22 Raptor pwn! :D
EDIT: imagine too, laser guided acks :huh

i have a game that deals with flying the f16 online mutiplayer but its like 8 years+ ago and wont work on XP, It was fun flying but man them air to air missles were killer, fun and fast action
