The Game Info section of the Aces High II web page says that the P-38J has 300 gallons internal. However, in the actual game, it has 420 gallons, according to the "E6B." I know it's not a P-38J-25-LO, because it's missing the dive flaps and power ailerons. So what is it? If it has 420 gallons, then it must be a J-15 or J-20, right?
-
Think the general consensus is that it's a J-15.
-
What P-38J is the historic default skin?
-
Irrelevant. Skins are not tailored to exact block numbers. In most cases skinners don't even know the details on the FM.
-
I always thought J15. Flat windscreen, leading edge fuel tank, no dive flaps or leading-edge landing light.
-
What's the difference between the J-15 and J-20? I don't think Bodie's book says.
-
Im sure its the J-15's, as they were the most produced variant of the P-38 J's with 1400 made. Only 10 J-1's were made (No 55gal leading edge tank) and 210 J-5. Both the J-1 and J-5 had the round forward windshield. J-10 with 790 made had the flat windshields and the 55gal leading edge tank. J-15 was the same as the J-10 with revised electrical system, and J-20 only had 350 made with revised turbo regulators. Only 210 J-25's were made before moving onto the L models.
So my best guess would be the J-15's. There would also be no real differance between the J-15, J-10 or J-15's that you would see in a sim.

Thanks, Gibbage. Where'd you find that?
Glad to see you here. Did you get sick of IL-2 and decide to try out Aces High II, or are you just browsing the forums?

What's this? Another 38 junkie? :)

Heh. P-38 is my hobby. I have a ton of books and web pages and I have spoken too over 5 P-38 WWII vet pilots and grilled them. I know a LOT about the P-38 ;) The details between the models is data gathered and posted on a web page I found. Its the only detailed collection of varient changes I have found. Not even Bodies book list's them.
http://home.att.net/~jbaugher1/p38_1.html
It starts out with the XP-38. To go too the next varient, just change the web address from p38_1.html too p38_2.html and so on. It goes all the way up too 20. I wish I could find out who posted this info, buts its been around for years. He also has alot of other aircraft, but I can find an index page.
As for why im here, I have played AH a few times, and I generally like to explore the flight sim forums. Its part of my job to see whats going on all over. I was also a member of Air Warrior (beta team even), Fighter Ace, and Warbirds. This is my 1st visit too the AH forums though. Thanks for the welcome!

Understatement of a lifetime.
I modeled the P-38 in IL2 and also have a P-38 model in FS/FSX at http://www.skyunlimited.net/p38.htm
I saw my topic of choice, investigated, and figured I could help out. Im a big fan of both P-38 and flight sims. Sadly, I must admit that I have not given the AH P-38 a fare shake, though I have heard a lot of positive things about it!
-
Well I guess I'll have to add ya to the SAPP forum. That's our "secret" place for the 38 junkies :)
Check down the boards if you get bored so to speak. Maybe you can add to the book list there etc.
My collection of 38 stuff is about as big as i can make it without completely breaking the bank, although I tend to more focus on the units that flew them and not the actual details of the aircraft from model to model.
I'm partial to the early birds E,F, G, H, myself :)

Joe baugher is the guy with the website btw. He's a serial numbers junkie.
This is where you start for him.

For me, its all about Lefty's White Lightnin. Best of both worlds! I also must say that the P-38 Swordfish has a very nice gondola section that I wish they put into production. Much better visibility, and was said too reduce the onset of the tuck-under that all us P-38 pilots know and "love". But lets not take this thread OT on my first venture into this forums. ;)
Thanks for the link!!! For some reason, I could not find his home page or index! It would just bump me too the ATT.net home page. I really must admire his guys devotion too aircraft references.

Yes, I know. I was Aerial Target in the IL-2 community before I got fed up with the Stalinist trash. I highly recommend giving the Aces High II P-38 a spin; even with just 60" Hg. MAP, she's still better than the travesty in IL-2 with 64". And best of all, she stalls straight forward, just like the real thing! If you decide to try it, be sure to visit my free eight-player server, Blue Sky: Maximum Realism.

Lets not get into any trash talk on any sims. Thats not what im here for. I would like to try and stay nutral since I do work on so many flight sims.

Here is something interesting I just noted.
Early P-38's had 300US Gal. J-10 and later blocks had 420US Gal, but were only fitted with two 55gal tanks. 2x55 = 110. 110+300=410.
I have an original pilots manual somewhere around here. In it it talks about something very interesting. The differance between normal fuel load, and USEABLE fuel load. Say you have a 20 gal tank on your car. You cant use ALL 20 gallons! Only about 19 is useable till the fuel pump cant suck any more. Aircraft were more so, and some fuel tanks had as many as 5 gallons unuseable. I can only guess that the wing tip tanks are 60 gal each, with 55 gal useable. Again, I need to dig through and find this information. Can anyone confirm this?
-
I don't know for sure, but I've heard it attributed to ground crews that the "official" numbers and how much you could actually put in varied by about ten gallons. That seems to fit with what you said, if I read correctly.
-
OK. This is from an ORIGINAL P-38 pilots manual.
Fuel Capacity.
4 wing tanks = 306gal
6 wings tanks = 416gal
So it looks like the numbers spewed all over the net are just rounded off or something.
FYI. This pilots manual list's Maximum speed as "over 420MPH" ;)
-
What Pilots Manual is that? I've got two different manuals; one is called "Pilot Training Manual for the P-38 Lightning" and the other is the classic "Pilots Manual for Lockheed P-38 Lightning."

You been watching the restoration now that Red Bull owns it?
Ezell Aviation is doing one heckuva job and photographing it as they go. Gonna be some serious polished metal on that 38L.

In the upper right hand corner, it says "AAF Manual 51-127-1" and lower right Pilot Training Manual for the P-38"
Its not a re-print. I have 2 other manuals that are re-prints after the war and this one is very very different. Its what they handed too pilots going through school on the P-38. Printed on 7-30-45.
-
Where did you get it? And what are the other two you have?

With baited breath! I was VERY excited to see the early E chin on it! I can only hope that since they are restoring it too Reno condition (non-historical) that they will also be raching it at Reno! One can only hope though. At first I did not like the idea of Red Bull buying her, but now I cant agree more with the work they are doing.

Its a PDF I found a long time ago thats a scan of a book. Looks like a historical archive since it has ID tags on some pages and its very high res. The other two are ones I got online. 1 was given too me by another P-38 fan when I did my IL2 model that simply says "Pilots Manual for Lockheed P-38 Lightning" with 2 P-38's on the cover from Aviation Publications (ISBN 0-87994-019-0) and the other (I cant find it) looks like a print of the PDF manual that has been floating on the net for years with all the racial cartoons in it. The only one that is truly authentic is the PDF I have. The other two are re-prints. The 1945 one does not have the racial cartoons in at all and is signed by Gr Arnold. The introduction page says the manual is used for training new P-38 pilots, and is not a general "pilots manual" but a training one. It goes into much much more detail about the systems and the operations then the standard pilots manual that im sure you have.
-
I just checked, and I have it. Actually, I'm pretty sure you sent it to me a few years ago. However, I've only got two, so I'm missing one. Other than the Pilots Training Manual, I have the one with the cartoons ("What was that?"). Do you know where I can get the other?
-
I think I got it at Garcia Aviation.
http://www.garciaaviation.com/cgi-local/storepro5/agora.cgi?
Its very similar too the one with the cartoons, and overall has less information in it. I dont think its worth your time if you have the original.

Thank you very much.
