Title: What a dik
Post by: blackdog68 on June 05, 2007, 09:45:27 PM
I got banned for 10 minutes on chat after saying what a dik when a person named dik got a proxy kill on my town raid.  Yes, that was his online nick, "dik"

what utter dikery!  It's OK to have dik as a screen name but not OK to say what a dik?

Intent, indeed.

It is now the job of moderators to interpret intent? Oh, please. How about next, telepaths can be empolyed to make sure that no has mean thoughts about each other?

Limit the filtering to Carlin's Seven Dirty Words only. If including derivations of those, do it fairly and make it applicable to user id's and all other in-game text. This will make it absolutely clear what is acceptable.

If it is ok for moderators to interpret intent, there is no telling what is acceptable. I might get muted if I told someone they had caught me with my pants down. Or perhaps if DIK shot me down and I said, "You suck DIK," forgetting to put in the comma ("You suck, DIK").

Yes, I agree with you, Mr. thread starter. That was ridiculous. If DIK, or anyone else, didn't like what you were saying, they could have squelched you.

It is within the rules to post my opinion about the rules, right? I mean, isn't that what discussions are for?

So if you would like to address anything I said, I will be happy to talk about that.

If you feel the need to continue stating the obvious, I'll just ignore it. Is that within the rules?

Actually, IIRC it is against said rules to discuss them and voice opinions on the forums. You can however shoot a email to the "powers that be" and discuss them freely

I agree with blackdog he shouldnt have been muted.

intent or not.

The guy has called himself that with intent and why should blackdog be punished for something that they have already allowed.  In another game moderators or Sysop's started taking liberties with their powers and I would hate to see AH go the same way.

It's a game where killing and dweebery runs rampant we don't need too many rules and regulations because that will take the fun away from ch200.

Well done for not taking it to seriously blackdog and posting here was the right thing to do so the community knows what standards moderators are actually taking in game.

Post by: Ghosth on June 06, 2007, 08:21:34 AM
It has always been up to the mods to try to discern "intent" and deal with the situation accordingly. Its the biggest single reason AH still has mods.

Language filters can not and will not ever be able to tell a persons "intent".
That takes another person.

And before you go off on the mods, they have probably the hardest job imaginable.

Imagine yourself about to dive into a dogfight, when you see something cross the text buffer thats "off color" or just plain nasty. As a mod you have a split second to try to remember what else that person has been saying. What his intent might be, and try to take a reasonable course of action. All of course while your trying to fly and enjoy the game yourself.

If your original intent was not to shock, disrupt, etc, why are you so angry about having your spiel cut off?

If it was an honest mistake there would be no "angst" Whoops, screwed up, sorry mod.

Your anger in your post confirms IMO that the mod did the right thing.
Now, you've had your wrist slapped, ok, you made a mistake. Don't get mad at HTC or the mods. Just don't go there again.

Ohhh and ps for anyone who cares, no I'm NOT a mod, not anymore. Too many people figured out eventually that I was a mod. Which of course for HTC is the kiss of death. Mods need to be unknown, in order to function.

Post by: GooseAW on June 06, 2007, 08:35:28 AM
Seems to me that muting someone for something said on a voluntary channel...(200)...should be a little more forgiving of the gray areas...intent be damned. If they don't want to hear Dik....don't tune.

There should certainly be limits, but if the name was approved by HTC, I agree it's hypocritical to mute someone for typing it regardless of "intent". This seems to be the real problem with this. I've seen many names in game that are utterly offensive.

*sighs*

Its more about the general way you handled things.

For instance, if you reach out to insult, offent belittle begrudge harass people, these kind of things will happen to you.

As said above, live and learn.
Your alive, so you can still learn.

Unless you view this as some kind of "funky universal screw YOU over objective everyone is in on,even HTC staff* type thing, i highly sudgest you just learn from it, keep your chin up and chest out.

-example- Try and drag people thru the mud for the actions taken unto you, it wont go very well.
Sometimes you just gotta nod your head and say to yourself "okay, thats the way it is *period*, i wont do that again." and all is well.

what if the guys name was ahole.  and someone said what an ahole.  would it be ok for everyone to call anyone an ahole, as long as not a**hole....or derivations there of?  it is perplexing, though if it is hard to understand why you got muted for saying "what a dik" then clearly there is nothing to discuss.   of course, how do we know HTC won't make this player change is name? how do we know the mod knows you were in fact referring to an actual player name?

also is it ok to call people cork suckers and iceholes?

Simple practice.  If you intend to police and enforce the non-use of particular words, or psuedo-words, in an online game, that database should tie into the one for appropriate names or idents used in the game.

If it makes it through the acceptable ident filters, it should not provoke a mute automatically.

Now, if this was somehow a player initiated mute..... that's more problematical, but as I rarely run into such problems that bother me, I'm not too certain how the game handles those incidents.

Title: What a dik
Post by: Ghosth on June 06, 2007, 02:00:48 PM
Tedrbr, that is exactly what is missing.

There is NO language filter on name creation.

Ones that are significantly over the top routinely get flagged by trainers, CM's etc and brought to HTCs attention and dealt with.

With all the kiddies circumventing the chat filter and giggling about it of late on 200, I can see whay they have a short fuse with this. To have a name with "intent" is a whole different animal than actually taking the time to type something out clever enough to make it through the filter. That in itself is its own "intent". I just detune 200...too bad we have to though just the same.

Title: What a dik
Post by: ROC on June 07, 2007, 08:02:47 PM
Hmm, let's see.

I was there, so that's not a lie.

I thought you were acting like a twit which is an opinion, not a lie.  Not personal as in "You Are A Twit", simply an action, Being, Acting like a twit.  There is a difference.

You got muted, I didn't, so someone else must have thought you were being disruptive, so that can't be a lie.  I'm not a mod, didn't "turn you in" didn't do squat other than read your text.  Oh, and I did laugh when I saw you post in here, so that's not a lie either.

Sorry, not my problem Skippy :)

Get over it, you got muted, don't do things you get muted for it's not that complicated, I don't understand why you are so worked up over it.

MODS in here are not there to educate people, that's the parents job.  They are just there to muzzle those who can't resist trying to find the line.

Now, think about this for a minute.  Per your text.  You got warned, you kept going, didn't get banned, and Still kept going on then "surprise" you got muted.  Mind you, I didn't write that, You did, so let's play with that a minute.

Dontcha think Continuing On after being warned by a mod is INTENT?  It's no accident, heck, you just spelled out the timeline in your own words.  Do you understand Intent?  That kinda means Intentional.  You were pretty clear that you understood the warning and Intended to continue.

Clear Yet?  You Disregarded The Warning.  How about now, clearer?  I honestly do not comprehend the difficulty in this.  Thanks for clarifying though, that you did in fact get, understand and Ignore the warning the mods gave you, it sure does a great deal of good for your "cause".

I'm not trying to be antagonistic here, but you are going out an trying to blame people that do good work in here, and have a tough enough job as it is, and you, Sir, are simply wrong here.  The bottom line, which even you cannot argue, is that if you would have Stopped after the first warning, that you Clearly admit to receiving and Ignoring, this never would have happened.  Sorry, the blame falls squarely on your shoulders, no matter how frantic your typing and spin.  Believe it or not, You are responsible for your actions, no one else is.

If it was simply "funny" as you put it, you would have gotten a warning from the MOD and laughed it off with a "sorry lol" and moved on.  Nope, sorry, clear as a bell here, and there are people that can tell.  I applaud their efforts.

Are you done yet?  I can keep going if you want.  This might be a good time to just let it go.

If it is ok fo` moderizzles ta interpret intent, there is no tell'n whizzat is acceptable fo' sheezy. I mizzight git muted if I told someone they had caught me wit mah pants dizzy. Or perhaps if DIK shizzay me down n I said, "izzle suck DIK," forgett'n ta put in tha comma ("You suck, DIK").

Yes, I agree wit you, Mr . Keep the party crackin while I'm steady rappin'. thread starta. Tizzy was ridicizzles. If DIK, or anyone else, dizzidnt like whiznat you were say'n, they could hizzle squelched you.

What AH needs is a dropdown selection of fixed comm messages like Disney Toontown Online. That way even muted players could continue to post and 'you rock' or 'welcome to Aces High'.

Mr Ripley >>>>>  NOT!

How is it punishment making you sit in the corner and be quiet if you don't have to be quiet? How is that going to deter anyone from doing it again?

The problem as you see it is the punishment IS effective. AH has turned into open mic night where some people care more about what they are spouting off than flying. Keep it civil, don't insult or attack people, don't try to be disruptive, don't try to cheat around the language filter, and you'll be fine. Its really not that hard to do.

ROC Sir, big  WTG, incredibly well said. You bundled him up in his own words and ran him up the mast as a foul weather warning about as neatly as I've ever seen done.  Always a pleasure running into you, be it FSO, main or here.

Well how about limiting the communications totally to those prefixed phrases? That would get rid of the problem once and for all.

Should all threads be stopped when YOU think they should??? Who are you to belittle people when they respond to a thread?

Must have hit it pretty close to the mark to get you all riled up like that.

You know when the truth has been spoken when someone types paragraphs of denials.  I mean really, my 19" LCD at 1280x1024 and your post takes up the entire screen! :furious

Anyway, I'm done with this thread, you can try and shoot me down online if you see a Rook LA5.

Hey tardling you were muted after a warning.
Why not just log in and ask on 200 for a mod to mute you?
It'd be the same thing.

As with most everything in life- WHO YOU KNOW, CAN OFTEN AFFECT THE OUTCOME OF ANY SITUATION.

INsult the squaddie/friend/relative/lover of a MOD= MUTE .

There is no clear line on acceptable callsigns, its all left to interpretation. This leaves room for discrepencies of opinions.
