John has a long moustache. John has a long moustache.

He's dead. I'm crippled. You're lost. Do you suppose it's always like that?
I mean war.

There is a fire at the travel agency.
We are on the brink of a day people will talk about long after we are dead and gone. And you know something? It gives me goose bumps just to be part of it.

Okay I'll give ya that...... But Wolverines ripped it off.;)
Still I liked the way they compared the resistance figters to those in France during the 40's. I'm just glad we never had to depend on Patrick Swayze , and Charlie Sheen.:D

Hehe. True. Red Buttons was great in The Longest Day. That is one of my favorite movies of all-time.

Anyone else notice none of the classic movie channels played "The Longest Day" on Memorial Day, and none are playing it today?

The Longest Day and Tora Tora Tora -- Great movies that stand up to the test of time. Saw both again recently. History is far above most of today's "war" movies. While quality productions like SPR and the Eastwood Okinawa films do a good job with the "feel" (maybe even a better job) these classics taught the history of the events at a level of detail that will not likely be seen again given focus groups and audience demographic concerns (they's be bored with all that stuff!), etc. Thus, U571 and Pearl Harbor, perhaps the greatest B-Movie of all time for the history buff. Over 100 technical and historical errors and counting.
And the visuals in these earlier films are up to snuff. With Tora the special effects represent the pinnacle of pre-digital technology (look mom -- no strings!) and the background ships were still, in many cases, of the era (with a few upgrades like Alpha mounts on Fletcher destroyers, etc. ). The fiberglass P40s were used to great effect, as were the AT6 Vals and Kates (with dropping ordinance). The explosions etc were well executed.
With The Longest Day, they had enough extras to give the production real scale. I had an old reserve Sgt. Major who was actually an extra in The Longest Day. Apparently, there was a lot of military cooperation in the making of that film, to include active troops stationed in Europe at the time.

If you want a great old war movie............ Battle of Britain. I think it tops even Tora Tora Tora for authenticity.

Ever notice how there were two very quick shots in that scene?

No, I didn't. I don't have the movie here or I would check it out again.

I watched the Battle of the Bulge the other night. I forgot how good and how bad it is. I love the over-acting of the extras when they get "hit" by enemy fire. TOSS GUN, SPREAD ARMS OUT, TURN 180 DEGREES, FALL!!!!
Would Priller have been considered a milk runner for being the only German flight (he and his wingman that is) over the beaches that day?

Nah, Priller wasn't a milk runner. A suicide pork dweeb who got lucky and survived maybe.:D
It wasn't a milk run, too many allied planes around to call it a milk run. I think he was trying to pork troops to prevent a capture.

Just look at it, gentlemen. How calm... how peaceful it is. A strip of water between England and the continent... between the Allies and us. But beyond that peaceful horizon... a monster waits. A coiled spring of men, ships, and planes... straining to be released against us. But, gentlemen, not a single Allied soldier shall reach the shore. Whenever and wherever this invasion may come, gentlemen... I shall destroy the enemy there, at the water's edge. Believe me, gentlemen, the first 24 hours of the invasion will be decisive. For the Allies as well as the Germans, it will be the longest day... The longest day.
