for the good fights tonight. The SAPP theme was D-Day 38Js so that's why all the invasion stripes.
3 38s were lost for real on D-Day and one of those lost cost Lt. Monty Coddington his life. He was from Pheonix Arizona and was killed while attacking rail targets while flying a P38J from the 428th FS, 474th FG, 9th Air Force on June 6, 1944.

While we had great fun tonite upping after dying and enjoying good company, he paid the real price. In some small way we were trying to keep him in mind tonite while we had fun.
Thanks to Jamusta, Batfink, DodgerCH, Glove and many others for all the good fights between 45 and 41 tonight.
While we were shooting 109s and other Luftwaffe birds down, they were shooting big holes in 38s and helping the 38 parts distrubution effort. It was good fun :)

Wow, one of my favorite rides, the 109 lawn dart. Thanks for the history lesson Gup'.

I was wondering how a 109 pilot managed to get shot down by 4 measly 38's, then I noticed the drop tank. if he would have pickled that you guys were screwed.
Guppy, it seems all the DDay focus is on the landings and para drops. Any accounts you have from the air of that day would be much appreciated.

Check some of the unit histories from the 8th and 9th AAFs. Almost every one I've ever read has a whole chapter on June 6. Most units flew from the pre-dawn hours until well after dark, there was a LOT of JaBo and a2a action that day.

big salute to the SAPP get-together, i had a real blast in a 109K4 and the fights were all about the low speed turning and intense yank-n-bank fights.
man, DOES DELIRIUM EVER MISS??

Your description sounds a lot more like my sorties, Del...are you sure you didn't switch the films? (I even stooped to flying an La7 to get some kills the other night....hangs head in shame)

There is a book called "1944 The Air War over Europe June 1-30th-Over the Beaches" By John Foreman that covers all the losses and claims on both sides as well as filling in anecdotal accounts of the action.
That's the best specific to the topic book I've found on D-Day covering all the air forces. There are numerous other books that include accounts of D-Day action however.

Yep that was you. I'm the smoking 38 in the background. Malapy and Clerick are the other two 38s. The poor unfortunate 109 is Jamusta. He'd gotten Soulyss with a heckuva good shot and then got mugged right afterwards :)

To his credit i had pinged him good just a few minutes before so as far as i know he was playing with a hurt plane.
P.S. it looks like those lessons we got from SHawk on hoarding and cherry picking paid off! (sorry SHawk :lol )
