Title: Reading task manager performance in Vista
Post by: JB17 on June 08, 2007, 10:30:24 PM
Skuzzy, et al.

Vista OS (Home Premium) running AHII in xp compatability mode.

Have 2 gig ram and noticed while looking in task manager that cashe memory fills steadily to 1432 of a total 1917, Free is 11.  This is without game running (from boot up but with 59 freaking processes starting).

My question is should I be concerned?

While my game is running it is not smooth and other planes are still too warpy.  Been very dissapointed with the amount of tweaking I've had to do with Vista (not your fault of course).  I haven't started shutting down processes as indicated in your other thread...will do so.

Thanks

By all means wait for Skuzzy's reply, but in the meantime I can say that I was able to pare down the ungodly amounts of default-running-processes quite a bit, and this reduced the RAM used by about 40% (the computers I did this on were 1GB RAM systems).

Definitely work to cut the fat, and you should see better performance in everything (including AH).

I followed Skuzzy's Hints and Tips for Vista (I also use Home Premium) and with a 2GB system I got ram usage, while sitting idle, down to 29%.  Made a big difference.

Appreciate the input, have begun the process but only down to 49% avail so far.

Not being the only user of this computer, can I set it up so that there is a "profile" for the game yet the rest of the family can use it normally?  Perhaps the game configuration could be set when I boot up or do I have to disable everything each time I play?

Before my old computer went kaboom there was a software program I used to turn off a bunch of services.  If anyone can help me with the name?  The only thing I didn't like was I had to reboot to turn them back on again.

That program was probably FSAutostart. There's no version of it for Vista yet that I know of. Unfortunately you also cannot set up a different hardware profile in Vista like you could in XP. At least that way you didn't have to manually kill services everytime you wanted to play AH.
