A couple weeks back in the flight service station post, someone posted a website (possibly fltpln.com) where you could pick up your clearance on the site prior to actually calling clearance delivery.
can someone tell me that site again./
-
nevermind, found it under ATC Routes on fltplan.com
-
You can't pick it up there. It just gives you what your clearance is probably going to be. You still need ATC to issue the clearance and a squawk.
-
Yup. Clearances are situational and squawks are usually computer generated. It probably depicts the most likely scenario but isn't a clearance.
-
Just ask me, i will give you your clearance Cav :t

Why do I fear it will involve a pool cue, a rotating chair and a pristine chicken?

This was a big no no, but a few years ago I worked at a facility that had a high percentage of international aircraft in the traffic counts. Sometimes it was seriously frustrating trying to communicate with the pilots and we had several close calls because of misunderstood instructions.
Our field was an isolated VFR only facility, and one IFR night after midnight shift change I snuck a hand-held VHF radio down to the base of the tower to mess with my friend who had just come on shift. I knew he had no traffic and wouldn't have any until the sun came up.
I don't remember exactly how the conversation went, but in my best garbled accent I finally convinced him that I didn't know what minima meant and he issued me a SVFR clearance to enter the class D out of sheer frustration. I kept him going for about 15 minutes calling in reporting points and finally went back upstairs to return the radio.
He told me all about this idiot he had been talking to and couldn't believe he had to put up with this crappy job, etc etc. I nodded along and it suddenly dawned on him what had happened. "Aww, **** you man!" :D
Anyway, you had to be there. Luckily for me there was no DVRS recorder in that facility. I might have actually gotten caught and into some real trouble, but back then I didn't seem to think that far ahead. :lol

I used to work at Abilene RAPCON back in the early 90's. We ran the tower at Abilene Regional airport and the RAPCON was located on Dyess AFB. We had gonsets to use in case the landlines went out (used to happen whenever a big storm would blow in from the west). At Dyess there were 2 C-130 squadrons based there along with the B-1Bs. One of the 130 squadron's call sign was "Fleagle". The 130's would usually depart VFR, go play around out to the NE then recover usually with an IFR Pop Up request to do a couple of practice approaches either at ABI or DYS then call it a night. One night I'm working in the tower at about 10 or so and I hear this oriental accented voice on freq " Uh Abarene towah dis is Freager 30 requesta IRS OneSeben Light apploach forrowed by a Rocarizer 35 Left Backacourse apploach ober" Now I just knew it was my buddy Stanley over in the RAPCON screwing with me late at night on the gonset. I immediately get on the landline and start yelling at him. " God d#mnit Stanley! Quit f**king around with gonsets ! At the same time I'm talking with Stan I hear the above message repeated again. Come to find out that the C-130 squadron had some folks from the Japanese Self Defense Force there on an exchange program and it was a Japanese Navigator on the radio.

Speaking of "Clearance Delivery", since FSS has been privatized have you noticed any difference in the service ? Complaints or cudoo's ? Just curious.
