It would be interesting to have high alt contrails in game.
-
Like anyone gets that hi anyway???
I agree completly and would enjoy looking at them from my plane or the enemies. Having said that tho.....how many really go up that high? Id say less than 2% of all flights go above 20k and .5 go above 25k. I feel those are generous number too.
IMO Great feature but will only be seen by select few.

Contrails should start above 15k or so... Quite a lot of fights go above this. Hell, 90% of Rooks come in at 15k before diving to the deck to cherry pick. :D
Not to mention the stupid stupid STUPID maps with 10k mountains circling EVERY field (for no apparent rhyme or reason), so most cons climb up to 15k or more just to cross the mountains to the nearest enemy field.
It's more common than you think.

To my knowledge contrails do not occur below 20k often with the norm being 25-30k. I agree with your statements otherwise.

Your joking right? When we do a bombrun, were always above 20k, and so are the cons we encounter. Plenty of folks up high, venture up there sometime and see. :)

Oh, and yes to contrails.:aok
-
Yes, I fly at 30k+ and would love to attract as many fighters as possible to their deaths :t.
Some times I stay at the seat the whole times, others I work and check back every so often. When I get a sector or two out I calibrate and wait to drop. Then I make that long RTB home, lol.
I hate bailing.

maybe have them start above the cloud layer...
-
From sea level I've chased bombers (B-17) over 30,000 feet. I kept passing out because my plane had no OXYGEN mask. I think I was in a C-205, well I was up there in something. The really good bomber pilots are usually up over 20,000 feet, especially on their way out of the target area.
I get pretty good vapor trails from oil or gas leaks from taking hits.

good idea make contrails 25k- 30k
it's small touches like this that will add extra immersion

Rooks would spawn with contrails... where have you been? lol

I think someone said this would be an FPS killer.

It depends on humidity and temperature as far as I know. Theres no real set altitude. I would also like to see vapor trails on planes pulling Gs. Both of these have been brought up many times, and many times peoples only problem about it was it would impact performance. The answer to that is make a box in the video settings to disable it.

As a rook I think this is a good idea. :p :p :D :t

Yo!

Contrails would be great to have in AH. Make the contrails a setting that you can enable if you want them or not.
-
update airshow smoke to contrails, comes on and off at certain alt, and user ablility to turn on and off in settings

Don't know where I got that screenie from. I saved it along time ago because I thought it looked cool. Sure is purdy.
-
If airshow smoke doesn't impact performance for your computer, I don't think contrails will do much.
-
Contrails form when hot humid air from hot exhaust mixes with environmental air of low vapor pressure and low temperature. I think for performance AH uses a “Standard Day”
I have no idea what the vapor pressure is associated with a Standard Day. Could be that on a Standard Day no visible contrails exists.
As I remember a Standard day was an airtemp of 59* or 15c* and Barometric pressure of 14.7mlb.

Contrail formation - NACA 1942 (http://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/19930093080_1993093080.pdf)
This report has diagrams that appear to indicate that over northern Europe trails could form as low as 16K under the right conditions.
I think non-persistent contrails would add a lot and probably be a small performance hit. Should be able to set it up so as to be able to enable or disable them for those with less powerful systems.
Best Regards
