well i got a new monitor recently its LCD instead of my old CRT and a new video card nvidia instead of ati and ah2 terrain colors changed a lot.
so basically what id settled on as being good faded olive drab isnt cutting the mustard for me now. so im making a new p38G corky jr of 80th fs 8 fg...
need pics i only have one tiny one from osprey book
youve been bugging me for a long time for this skin guppy so let me know your preference on the olive drab fading which I am working on now as shown in the pic...
do you prefer the faded greenish olive drab of my first p38G's or a bit more desaturated olive drab with more yellowish red tint and a tiny bit less green?
so many different versions of the same color hehe
heres the current colors...

If I can pitch in?
I like both, but prefer your faded over your desaturated. :aok
-
which ones?
problem for me is an LCD screen is a different world from a CRT and what is desaturated on CRT looks just right on LCD... trippy
like i said nothing looks the way it did on my screen anymore so you could say i have skinenr vertigo and dont know what looks good or which way is up or down now.

Yep.. Some of my "darker" early skins were on a failing CRT. Once I ditched it for LCD I got back on track. I'm at work right now (on another failing CRT) so it'd have to wait til I get home. Then I'll hop into AH and check the skins out, tell you the name of one of the greens I like. :aok

My baby!!!!!
Very much appreciated that you've take the time to even start that bird. It's a very pleasant surprise and when it makes it in, you can bet at least one pilot will fly it all the time :)
Looks great to me. That faded out, too much time being ridden hard and put away wet look of the Pacific is how it looks to me.
The two images of Corky Jr
This was the day he got his 5th kill in the fall of 43 and had to shut down the left engine to conserve fuel on the way home. Wade Meyers is doing a painting of this particular event for me.

And the photo of Smith taken with Corky Jr. This was earlier in the summer of 43. It appears that there is a thin black outline to Corky Jr and that was common practice based on other photos of 80th birds with the yellow lettering for the names. "Porky II" is outlined in black, "Princess Pat", "Dottie from Brooklyn", etc

Just an afterthought.
Again based on the common practice in the 80th FS and the photo evidence of it.
Below the cockpit and right above the 4 Japanese flags on Corky Jr it would, have in yellow:
-PILOT-
Lt. "Corky" Smith
An example off Jay Robbins Jandina. You can see it although they taped over the name for the photo.

And the view after Corky made Captain and on his later 38J

Just re-read this after I settled down :)
I really liked the tone of the camo you had on the first 38Gs you did. The brownish green OD looked "right" to me.
At the same time if you look at different color photos there is clearly a mix of greens used and the time in theater certainly lightened the green up so the one you have now looks like a 38 that was in combat for a few months already in the summer and fall of 1943 in the Pacific.
I think it's a nice contrast to the other great OD 38s you've done too so I think I'd stick with the new look you have.

also any suggestions on the star border?
did it have the blue border all around the star and bars like porky II did?

I believe it's just a trick of the sun as I've seen no evidence in any photos of flight lead or squadron leader bands on 80th 38s like they had in the 475th. And that includes on the later silver birds that had more color. Smith's 38J had rudder stripes for example, and Cy Homer had checks on his rudder when they were running things, but no bands on the tail booms.
Ed Cragg was Squadron Leader and Porky II had nothing. Smith was an element lead but not a flight leader at this point.

Porky II didn't have a blue border that I've ever seen.
You'd be looking at just the white bar without a border. First photo evidence of the blue border added is with the first J models they got early in 44.
This was from the time where it would have had the red border if they hadn't been fighting Japan.

Cit, I'm home and have checked the skins offline.
I had to look up the numbers to give you an accurate description.
I prefer the "baked in" look of the 475FG/432FS -J over the "yellowed" look of the 475FG/431FS -G, both skins that you've done.
Hope that describes which one I like better!
