Title: Excellent F6F Documentary
Post by: halcyon on June 14, 2007, 08:44:34 PM
Found this on youtube...just finished watching the whole thing.
Excellent.
(each part is about 8-9 minutes long)

Part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7XJGsbhCgc&mode=related&search=)
Part 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIz9I7GG-Ps&mode=related&search=)
Part 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddQnIk0IIbE&mode=related&search=)
Part 4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8elNUAGqILY&mode=related&search=)
Part 5 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuByxBeSZxo&mode=related&search=)

I don't think the in-game F6F has the power shown in this documentary, but it's still a tough plane all around.

F6F has power to burn.

Thing is you need to match it against its historic counterpart...the Zero.

Wow, that was cool.  What was that at Truk?  148 zekes downed to 8 Hellcats?  Wow.  19 K/D for the Hellcat overall during the war?  Wow.  No wonder I like that plane :)

Blooz struck the right note......it was a Zero killer. In AH its not even on the radar compared to a lot of planes but to the Zero it is a monster!

That's from the Dogfights series, which has other great shows in it, too.  I like that series.

I'm relatively nooobie here, but this is my favorite kick-donkey plane, so far.  This is what I used to learn carrier landings here.  It is carrier or land base, kicks quite a punch in attack mode: bombs, rockets, 6-.50 cal with a good supply of rounds for strafing and if I ever learn how (according to Mathman) is a good dogfighter.  I can tear up a town pretty good in just one sortie.  And it takes a lot of damage to kill it.

Thanks for the links.

I was watching for that.  I didn't see a single HO attempt.

great plane, takes some damage but just not enough speed to keep away from being ganged, even at a 'safe' distance.  It's sterile in most environments as you can always find a better plane for the situations that this game presents.

That's what most believe ... until they run into a guy that knows what he is doing in a HellCat ... but by then it's too late and they are dead and wondering what the heck just happened.

The F6F is probably the best all-around plane in the hanger. Not exceptional at anything, but good at a lot of things.

ever seen greebo or akraven fly it? their K/D ratio in it would suggest that its far from "sterile"

its a great plane takes lots of damage has good ord load out, its not slow it turns well, dives great in my opinion its one of the better multi-role fighters when you get in the nitty gritty. If you like to run from fights its probably not your plane

I out dueled a Spit IX one-on-one with an F6F a couple of weeks ago and I've beat Ki-84's and a host of others with one.  It's also one of the best bombing platforms in the plane-set.

Far from "sterile".  In fact it's near the top of the plane-set in most environments.

The lack of speed makes it one of the best learning planes in the game.  It is quite survivable once you get a handle on the plane and ACM.  I learned more about dogfighting in a couple months flying the F6F than I learned in a couple years flying the P-51 because it forced me to fight my way out of bad situations rather than pointing the nose down and running.

It's got enough speed to out run any of the knife-fighters, but just enough speed to draw the late war monster away from the knife-fighters and then give them sum of dat "Grumman Iron Works" beat down.

I never thought much of the F6 until I ran into the likes of Mathman, Drex, Wadke and a few others. I quickly changed my mind.

Excellent, a very succinct and accurate analysis.

Bottom line: Its a fun aerotoon to pretend to fly in.

The F6F is a beast.

I still get pissed remembering Wadke in an F6 repeatedly killing about four of us.  Occasionally we'd get him with a lucky pick, then he'd return to spank us.  To this day, I don't try to saddle up on an F6 too soon. Where is Wadke?

Maybe it doesn't excel in "certain situations".  It does excel when trying to capture bases or kill red guys.

The wings are too straight for my taste.  It'd be perfect w/ gullwings.

HONK!
Gooss

I think he's one of those jet sim weenies now. He just noticed we'd booted him the other day, so he's apparently still lurking. Probably been a year since I've seen him in game, though.

You FKA Ptvipe by chance?

Ah, saw you on the other night, and the mention that you were back after a hiatus. Mistaken cartoon identity, probably caused in part by bourbon.

Gooss, wadke's not been flying for a while now.  :( He pops his head in the BK forum now and again, but he's been pretty busy with real life, work, school, etc. I miss the little doofus too. :cry
