I dont know if some of you know about the asteroid scheduled to miss earth in 2029. But I like freaking out my friends and telling them it'll hit us.
Here's some info, but keep in mind. There is a 1 in 8,000 chance of it hitting earth. If it does... however... well, it'll suck.
http://www.astronomy.com/asy/default.aspx?c=a&id=3434
First batch of info
Some of this stuff is the same, but did I mention that the asteroid may be coming back around and hitting us in 2035-2037? whoops... I didn't mention did I.
http://english.pravda.ru/science/19/94/377/16479_asteroid.html
And for any other information you need... HERE'S WIKIPEDIA! :aok
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/99942_Apophis
Please also note, that if it DOES hit us... this will happen :( :(  :cry :O :Ohttp://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6909147644920979305&q=Asteroid+earth&total=224&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=1
Please ignore the japinese lady talking.
Anyway, this is to discuss it, argue about it, and then fear about it. :cry
-
it either hits us or it doesnt and there aint nothing we can do about it. so its not worth worrying about.
-
tell that to my friends ;) It'll be one hell of a boom though. :D
-
Maybe I will still be around for that big cleanup of the west coast of the US. It just might impact the whole global warming scenario also. That would really cool things down and probably cause another ice age. Wouldn't that just be the bomb to go from to hot and massive polar ice melts to massive global glaciers in a matter of months.
-
:huh   ..... OOOOH:aok :rofl :p

As long as it is scheduled to miss, why worry?
-
(99942) Apophis should be added to the planeset immediately.
-
or hit. Then it will just come around and hit earth in the back of the head unexpectedly... while we wave our arms and flair, trying to get the earths attention so that it'll turn around, see the asteroid, and step to the right.
Therefore the asteroid would narrowly miss earths head, then earth will grow arms, and take out a gun. Blow up the asteroid, and we will all be happy.
-
Jeez - that wasn't an asteroid in the film - that was a whole other planet.
If a half-click asteroid strikes near here, I might at last be able to afford a house...:lol

:lol

either way, if you dont worry, it should all come as a pleasant suprise.

That was disconcerting. :huh

"And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea; and the third part of the sea became blood.
And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died, and the third part of the ships were destroyed.
And the third angel sounded and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;
And the name of the star is Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.
And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars: so as the the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.
And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, "Woe, woe, woe to the inhabiters of the Earth..."

Revelation 8:8-13
Sounds like a pretty good description of what would happen to the Earth if a large asteroid were to strike. But what did St. John know...he had no scientific training.

you better have sunscreen:cool:
The bad part is if it impacts the earth and doesn't destroy it but it hits a nuclear storage site,They could blow it up with missiles or if technology allows send shuttles up there to nuke it....

Apophis should be perked.
-
I'll be 70 and depending on my health, may welcome its arrival

hehe look up Planet X.........

The comet is mostly ice right? Put our politicians on the surface. In a mere few days it will alll have evaporated. Put michael moore and al gore on it and it will take hours.
-
NO... there is a chance it will hit.
If it does it will be the end of life as we know it.
We can't take the chance that it won't hit. we need to get every "scientist" to get off the man made global warming bandwagon and onto the asteroid doom band wagon.
This is far too important to take a chance on. we need to DO SOMETHING RIGHT NOW!!!!
We need to have the UN form a committee and get every nation on the planet to sign on. We may have to suffer some loss of income and freedom but....
Do we have any choice?

Cool!

Fellas, this has been discussed...and the solution is already at hand...

It's 320 metres across.
That means it can be NOOKED TO DUST :D
-
Its the ones we don't detect that we should worry about. ;):noid
This asteroid will also offer an opportunity for the "Me" generation who will be in their 50's and 60's to run up credit card debt to amounts unpayable sans interest.....oh wait, they're already there! ;)

Plenty that we can do about potential asteroids that threaten to his the Earth, provided we know about it (which requires better inventory of objects in our solar system), and know about it with enough advanced notice. The further in advance a known threat is dealt with, the less effort is required to deal with it. Solar sails can tug an asteroid out of our way, with enough advanced notice. Even painting the surface of an asteroid can move it using solar pressures, if done a long time in advance. Ion tugs are a more brute force effort, and rockets or mass drivers even more so.
Besides Apophis - 250-metre-wide - (has a 1 in 45,000 chance of hitting Earth on 13 April 2036), there are a few others that have a good chance of hitting the Earth, or passing close enough to effect their orbit to hit Earth in a follow up orbit.
There are over 108 asteroids, known so far, considered to be "potentially hazardous objects" to planet Earth.
1950 DA - over 1 km across - has a maximum 1-in-300 chance of striking the Earth in the year 2880, and is the most likely threat at this time.
1997 XF11 - about a mile wide (320,000 megatons of dynamite force) - is expected to pass at 30,000 miles in 2028.
asteroid 2000 SG 344 close approach in 2030, and how Earth effect's it's follow up orbits is a concern.
There are others being watched for 2013, 2014, 2016, 2030, 2070, and so forth. Over 108 known threats so far, and this does not take into account asteroids or comets, especially very long period orbiting bodies, we do not know about yet.
-
Just send Ben Affleck, He'll take care of it.

by that time Star Trek technology might become reality and so the military can just blow it up with lasers

We won't have to wait until 2880....we're about 15 years away from that type of high powered laser. ;)

HACKER! There's no way you could have 4 lives at 230 points!

Like I said... get the UN to run the asteroid program... get all the countries (like iceland) that don't have asteroid destroying ability to give money to the US so that we can do the research and build the asteroid killing nukes.

nuke the roid.

No one likes my idea of sending politicians to melt the suckers???? :cry

works for me..i was just thinking launching Bush at it and it runs away:confused:

Point of order. Affleck went home on the super shuttle. Bruce Willis blew the thing up.

lol. Just posted a MySpace bulletin with those links, but only quoting the sentences that promise absolute doom... lets see how long it takes to create a full-fledged teen-panic!
So... what your saying is, in 2028 we should sell ALL of our stocks??? :huh
-
Nah, it'll probably miss. I've been researching it. But yea... teen panic!
Tell me how that goes :D :t :t :rofl

nice

:D but my sig is true for "Flame Warriors",and its a quote too :aok
[unhijack]use the NewU's and throw them at the asteroid(or launch them).it will be like a squeaky nuke:D
-
to try to get back on asteroid topic............Where is Zefram Cochrane when we need him the most.
-
he got vulched:O
-
I say we let it hit... doesnt that YouTube vid make the impact look like fun???
But if we HAVE to evade it, dont we have like... 26 milion nukes??? Itd be a great way to save the world and help disarm it as far as nuclear weapons. I know that causes fragments, but really, whats the likelyhood of moving it? Or maybe we could use said nukes to cause a control explosion on the surface of the asteroid deflecting it... really, you only have to deflect them a tiny bit, dont you? Considering they will continue going in the direction you deflect them due to there not being friction in space...
-
the man made global warming scientists better work overtime cause the end of the world due to asteroid scientists look like they are gaining in the panic race to get funding.
