With General Robin Olds' recent passing, it'd be nice if someone with skills and talent I don't have would take a shot at doing his "Scat II" P-38J.

i thought someone did
if not pics?

Yep, the bird was silver. Osprey has the profile wrong. Photos definately confirm the NMF bird as Scat II.
-
Corgi and Matchbox have both made their die-cast of Scat II in Olive Drab finishes. Could it be possiblke that it was an earlier model of a P-38? Much like Bud Anderson's "OLD CROW" P-51B was OD, but his P-51D was first OD, then NMF?
-
I do not recall seeing Olds pictured next to a P-38J with "Scat II" on it that was OD. If Dan says "Scat II" was NMF, I'd say it's a pretty sure thing it was an NMF bird.

Bud Anderson's Old Crow, at least his D model was painted in the field and then his ground crew stripped it when winter set in.
A picture is worth a 1000 words :)
From the 479th history. Note Olds standing next to a clearly NMF 38 named Scat II. And also note the remnants of Scat II after it went down with another pilot. No rudder color either.
That was later in the summer after the invasion stripes came off the top wings. No clue where Corgi and others got their info.
I'd also suggest based on the photo that Scat II was red outlined in black, not yellow outlined in red as on the corgi bird.
