Any advice on flying this plane. I've been flying it for a couple of days and am starting to like it some.

Keep it fast. A beter advice would be to fly the C202. Other than the gus, a lot better in my opinion. Good speed, excel, turning and the advantage of people under estimating it.
-
Definitely keep it fast... But, if you get caught in a situation where you have to turn, ONLY use one notch of flaps...
-
Don't be afraid to get "slow-ish" in the C2. It's not *bad*... Just don't turn it with zeros and such.
The C205 is better in many areas to the 202. It climbs MUCH better and has a top speed MUCH higher and accelerates much better (much more horsepower). Think of the C202 as the 109E-4, and the C205 as the 109G-2. Big difference.
C.202 is nice but you can't beat 2x20mm cannon!
EDIT: P.S. IMO never use flaps, unless you're landing, forcing an overshoot, or are coming over the top of a loop.
-
Ahhhh.......the C.205.
My absolute favorite airplane in the game. You'll find the C.205 is one of the most underrated and unappreciated aircraft in the game.
Maybe it's because people think Italian aircraft suck or because there's a dot in the designation....I don't know.
What I do know is what this plane can do.
Strengths:
- superb climb rate, one of the best in the game
- very nice sizable ammo count. It sports 2x MG 151/20 20mm cannons along with 2x 12.7mm Breda SAFAT machine guns, a kick up from the usual 7.9mm MGs many of the other planes carry
- it retains E very well, and usually I find myself keeping at least a speed of 200 in short duration high E-bleeding turns or climbs
- roll rate ain't too shabby either
- it's got nice speed once you get it going, and the acceleration isn't bad
Weaknesses:
- it's extremely prone to stalling out. Not only from a lack of speed, but from overexertion on the control surfaces (i.e. pulling to hard in any direction) more so then other aircraft
- some complain about the cockpit visibility but I adjusted my views and I don't have any problems
- somewhat of a short to medium range fighter. It's not for escort or long missions, but it can stay up there long enough to score 6 or 7 kills before either you run out of fuel or ammo...or both :)
Try it out for a few days, and see how you like it. It's nice to see people willing to fly other aircraft other then spit 16s, LA7s, N1Ks, and Ponies.

I also agree with this. If you keep the plane fast enough you won't need flaps to pull some high G turns. Flaps don't really help turns as well as they would an F4U or P47.
-
Don't auger.
-
Drain the wing tanks first.
After they are dry, the roll rate increases, as does the ease of turning.
Land a few killz.
-
I personally think the 202 flies much finer. If it had decent guns I'd probably fly it more than anything else. It's still a blast though, especially with the green pimp daddy skin.
-
Agreed, drain the wing tanks first. Stay fast. Stay high if possible. Learn to manage your fuel.
The C.205 has a good sustained climb over the long haul. It's a good medium to high altitude plane. C.202 probably flies better, especially at lower speeds, but I prefer that in KoTH, I like cannon in my zoomers in LW. You have good WEP. A nice ammo load. It can maneuver well when light.
Typically, I lift a C.205 with 100% fuel from a field near to the one I'm headed to in defense. I'll set for a 2K to 3K per minute climb, draining the wing tanks, and get myself to 15K to 20K (more or less) about the time they are dry. I'm not sure about the CG for fuel in the AUx tank, but I've been draining half of it before hitting main (in case of fuel leak hit). I level out and get up to speed. C.205 makes best speed at 23K at about 400 mph. It can dive in excess of 550mph in a dive, and you'll lose it around 575 to 590mph.
I tend to use the C.205 as an alt monkey hunting other alt monkeys and high buffs on the approach to a field under attack, or trying to break the CAP over a friendly field. As fuel starts to run low, I'll B&Z the furball, or hunt around it's edges. Eventually, I'll find myself getting low of altitude, fuel, or ammo.... and head for the barn. A C.205 deep in a low furball with Spit-16's, La-7's, and Nikis' all around can find itself in trouble to be picked, especially if you don't have E to work with.
Soda's write up on C205 (http://members.shaw.ca/soda_p/C205.htm)
There is a reason the G.55 was my second choice in the voting that was held. Still wanted a second perked buff with the 'Vader, but the G.55 would have been a great little addition to Italian plane set. A cannon-heavy C.205 in many ways.
-
The 205 is my fav plane i'll up this before anything else. get on a spits 6 and they have a hard time shaking you. Keep it moving if you get slow climb out and come back in. It dives very well it doesnt compress to easy. Once wings are drained it's got a sick roll rate. But I will add never take off with anything but full fuel, even if you just doing a short hop base defence. The only thing this plane is missing is the drop tank and the 500kg bomb it carried irl, one or the other. IMO i'd love to see a drop take on this, as their should be. Have fun with it fly it and you'll see what us 205 pilots are talking about, but i'll warn you once you up it you may not wanna fly anything else but it.
-
The cockpit framing in the 205 is absolutely horrible, though! :)

The default, yes, but with views adjusted, they aren't bad at all.

8903, the C205 had DTs (as did later model C202s -- DTs were available before the 7mm wing guns were), but the bombs were only 100lb (50kg) if I remember. It's something but still not quite 500lbs
:aok
P.S. If the C205 had DTs in-game I'd fly it even MORE than I already do!!
-
Whels, thanks for the numbers. I was sure it was marginally faster than the 8, as the clipped wings reduced drag.
Ted, I'm not sure if Soda's page has a mistake or not. It says the C205 has only 5 minutes of WEP. I thought it had 10 (like LW 109s)??

you are correct, with the 50kg, was not sure if it was 50 or 500.
It would be nice to have a dt for it. but i'll still fly it.
-
fly the 202 :aok makes you saddle up for a shot...its fun doing that. guns on it arent so bad if you saddle up at 200 and wait for your shot.
-
I was flying the C205 a tour or two ago. Was landing lot of kills left and right. Then next thing I couldn't up with out dieing.
Was a nice plane but I agree with the "keep it fast" idea. However I have seen a pilot or two , do very well in it at slow speeds and turning in the 205.
( I liked the 205 over the 202)

from wikipedia
the C.205 performed well in combat. On 2 August, six Veltros attacked twenty P-38 Lightnings and Curtiss P-40s, shooting down six of them for the loss of one

C205 is nice, and C202 is nice. The guns really make a difference though.
Most I've ever landed in 1 sortie with a 202: 12
Most I've ever landed in 1 sortie with a 205: 16
The 20mms really let you get kills, even if they're weaker than Hispanos.
If you're used to spit1s or hurri1s then the 202 will be a joy. If you're used to cannons only, you may find the 205 a bit more to your liking. Either way, welcome to the brotherhood of Macchi lovers!
P.S. I'm currently trying to convince my squaddie (Odee) that the C.205 is a great plane. :noid
-
it's been a while for me but I fly it like a dora until it get's slow then I fly it like a 109G6.
-
some very interesting c205 stories on the site below
http://www.ww2aircraft.net/forum/stories/italy-1943-macchi-c-205-vs-spitfires-4291.html
these are from the book “Un Pilota del Cavallino Rampante”. they are translated to english.
-
i rarely fly the Macchi 205. I'm not sure why i don't fly it, because when i see a red 205, i definately give it respect... i suspect that maybe some of the crafty ones are flying this one. im gonna give it a shot tonight.

C205 Rocks. Seems to be getting more popular. Best thing I learned about it was to burn the wing tanks off first. They burn of very quick and she handles very well.

Uh-oh...
I, er, um, uh, retract my previous comments. The C.205 sucks in every way. Just go fly a spitfire or a 190, folks! Nothing to see here, move along!

C.205s are yummie... With a little seasoning and meatballs.
High speed handling is exceptional... Low speed handling is among the worst in the plane set.
For the C.205, speed is truly life. Try the C.202 as Stang states, it's more fun and can actually turn fight (up to a point).
My regards,
Widewing

Just to complete Jerkins data, the 205 could carry 2 160 kg bombs or 2 100 liters drop tanks.
Italian planes rock! Next time vote for the G.55! :)
-
Where's Gatt when you need him? I need Gatt to use his extensive knowledge and library on Macchi planes to research how often and how common the DTs were on the C202/205. If they were somewhat common (read: if they were not rare) then there's no reason HTC should leave them out of the game!
-
Eh, Gatt's playing really few, he was brought by 4° Stormo guys to Target Tobruk... you can leave a message for him on their BBS (http://www.4stormo.net/forum/).
Anyway, Krusty, I think they were not common and that's why HT didn't model it.
And, btw.... it's not silver it's white! :D
-
HT didn't do a lot of things... The C2s are "Generation 1" aircraft. They could stand many updates (including DTs!)
It's BMF! Silver!!
-
Lol, load the skin, put yourself in the cockpit and look at the wing... it's paint, not bare metal... and it's white! :t
-
It's MEANT to be bare metal!
P.S. Why aren't you flying the C2s as much as your Ki84? Have you no national pride?? :P
-
205 is teh suck
Fly the 202
-
Hey Gianlupo, here's Kweassa's own words :t
As you can see it doesn't look bad under some lighting angles(bottom pic), but I'm having trouble depicting metallic conditions under low light intensity
and then right after that, he said:
Studying methods to depict baremetal looks is an interesting experience. Not sure if its sufficient, but seems much better than first attempts.
Pic was taken at 14:00, the same time, as the very first pic. Much better metallic look despite same sun light conditions.
-
Irrelevant, Krusty. The result is different from what intended... :t
