what do you think about them changing the name of Iwo Jima?
it is now Iwo tu
-
It's their island.
-
It WAS.
The only legal occupants are 400 Japanese soldiers, and the rare U.S. pilots and crew who use the training strip.
No civilians are allowed on the island. The former occupants, and their descendants, requested the island be officially identified by its original name, Iwo To.
-
Iwo Jima is the wrong name anyway. Why shouldn't they change it back?
-
Who cares...
The name change means nothing with regards to the men who fought and died to take and defend that island. They will always be the reason that hunk of volcanic ash is remembered.
-
The kanji is the same. The kanji for island can be pronounced shima (or jima in this case), or tou (not "to" as reported).
-
Never should have returned it. We earned it fair and square

Imperialism is soooo 19th century. Move with the times.

24,000 wounded and 6000 dead Marines in a 30 day period of time?

I heard that "Sea of Japan" would be changed to "East Sea". What do you think about that?

If you use this kind of accounting the Japanese paid with about 20000 soldier
They earned it too don't you think ?

the only difference being that when the battle concluded, all the Japanese were dead. There were no Japanese left (not many at least, the last two Japanese survivors on Iwo surrendered in 1949).
Let me put it to you like this straffo, the japanese were defeated on Iwo and the island was claimed as united states territory. We gave it back some 40 years later. We should not have. Who knows, Maybe Boeing got a big order from JAL out of the deal :cry
Anyway, to those that know its history, that Island will always be known as Iwo Jima.

Don't worry, the Kanji character(s) for "Iwo Jima" will stay the same:)
-
Me at Iwo, a long time ago, on the front, left.
It will always be IWO JIMA!

"We?"
You earned, contributed or sacrificed nothing and are just a carpetbagger on the coattails of a different generation.

Those who know its history know that it was returned 24 years later and was known as Iwo Tou far longer than it was known as Iwo Jima. They also know that Japan paid for the return of the islands and Okinawa. For the past half a century, Japan has continued to be the best ally the US has, in spite of your "opinion."
To 1K3: Renaming something is not the same as correcting the pronunciation of something, but I have no opinion about your question.

bomb em again

Two words to describe most of this thread;
American Thugs.
-
Okay, a word from an Icelandic thug here ;)
I think the name should rest the same, for the honour of those who fell on that island in some month of 1945.
And to the Americans anyway, this will alwys be IWO.
-
Yeager, the Russians lost 30 million souls getting to Berlin!
should they own it? NO. ;)
-

The USSR lost some 22 millions in WW2 AFAIK.
Most were really NOT lost getting to Berlin.
-
I thought the soviets did take half of germany including half of berlin as a war prize?
We made em give it back.
lazs
-
Yeager, we lost far more soldiers we crossed the Rhine into Germany than we did at Iwo Jima. Do you think we should still have possession of Deutschland?
Man, looking at the casualty figures for WWII battles reinforces the fact that this was a REAL war.
Regards

back to your hole

Did we claim the Deutschland as sovereign american territory after winning the battle? Although I wonder why american soldiers are still in the Deutschland, sixty plus years later.
American Thugs

someone is angwy, did ThUgS steal your lunch money this morning?
-
This thread is begging the question: If the island and its name are so damn important to you people why the hell did you sell it to the Japanese? American thugs? No. American whiners’ more like it.
-
I will write a poem about Iwo Jima and post it here later.
Or maybe some Haiku, wouldn't that be fitting
-
How manly of you.
-
then again, maybe I wont.
Just remember this: Iwo Jima
-
Angus,The Battle of Berlin cost the Red Army 81,000 Dead, and around 280,wounded.
God knows how many died getting to the start point.
Total Russian losses as a Result of the Nazi invasion,Around 29,000,000,including civilian casulties.

NO, it's
Iou (sulfur)
shima or jima or Tou (these 3 words can also mean island)
;)
-
All right, Angus, and all you Marines carrying the M-1 Carbine (but the Carbine is another thread).

Did you indeed?
It was actually a slice of Germany, roughly a quarter, and less than that proportion of the population.
And the giving back...was made by brave folks from the eastern part.
As for the Carbine, - I carried the Thompson most of the time, and then the M1, which was the most common one.
(Thompson was very comfortable to carry, M1 not so.)

I think Stalin had a hand in increasing those numbers...
ack-ack
-
Russian losses in combat pale in comparison to stalins purges
-
The Russian soldier was not just fighting Hitler he was often in as much danger from Stalin!and the NKVD
He was shot at going forwards and backwards,if he was captured he ended up in a concentration camp,If he was released...He ended up in a Soviet concentration camp.
And just to make it clear,I have no time for Stalin or his evil regime,I believe in credit were it's due,and believe the the Russian peoples sacrifice in WWII,has gone virtually unoticed in the west, due to Hollywood, the cold war and the stain of an evil communist regime .
The Russian people paid in Blood, lakes of it,and Stalin added to that Lake.
Most if not all historians acknowledge the war was won in the East, but could not have been done,at least not as Quickley without the ford/studebaker trucks and the vast amount of other lend lease material supplied by the USA.This was paid for in Dollars, but the real payment was in Blood
