Title: Why no Artillery?
Post by: Acidrain on June 20, 2007, 02:35:18 PM
maybe a 155mm Long Tom or a towed gun or Howitzer would be fun to play with.

LVT4 has a short barrel 75mm howitzer.  fun to use to shell the town or field and can be used for indirect fire as well.

I'd rather have artillery that can also be used as a tank destroyer and as a manned puffy ack positions to shoot at high buffs:

We've hashed this one over a few times, just a few, LOL...
Arty YES!!!

What kind, and their manner of deployment, is a much debated topic...
Lots of great opinions!!!

The 88Flak36 is an iconic WW2 weapon, so its pretty much a must have...

But US 155long tom's and 8inch would be a real sledgehammer on the battlefield...
Fighters would have to fly cap over them too, because they'd be easy meat for intruders...

I'm cool with a 88mm as long as it doesn't receive any proximity
fuzed shells.  You guys expecting a death ray would be a touch
disappointed, though :D

If your going to have towed Arty I would say 75-105s would be a reasonable caliber to deploy. Give them HE and HEAT rounds for tanks.

HTs with Mortars as well. Most armies had HTs with 81mm or 3inch mortars.

Hmmm, whatever caliber of tube, even pea shooters would be cool... I understand that people have a great fear of REAL Arty....
With good reason...

Also the muzzle blast from heavy Arty was visible for MILES... Even in Daylight... Would make them easy to find...

As a method of use; Why not tie the Arty fire to a spotter plane, or a jeep...ONLY!!!  1 spotter for one Arty Bttry...

L5, (piper cub) spotter plane, or jeep spotter, must have a direct line of sight to the target area...

Kill the spotter, Arty fire stops...

I'd rather see a Westland Lysander IIIA than an L5.....but I do like your idea.

The Lysander IIIA's could carry 500 lbs worth of bombs (frag and smoke), had 2 forward firing .303's and two pintle mounted .303's for the gunner, flare and smoke ejectors and smoke generators.

IF they ever put arty into AH they would have to put in the 88. I would love to see AP,HE,AB, and timed shells.

As it would be harder to hit planes with the timed fuses then proxy fuses on the 5"er, I would still love to have them for hi alt bombers.

It would be cool. BUT, I see it being abused as a vulch cannon. Even if only deployed able at bases and not spawns. You know there are those players that would spend the time lugging it for the longest time just to reach a enemy feild to vulch some kills. Myself included. :p

I've seen both 75mm and 115 mortars (maybe in was a 125) in action.
They're not that big, - we pulled the 75's behing a Willy's GP, and the big one behind a halftrack. The ROF was definately not slower than in AH, once the crew was properly "hot".
The big one was a loud bugger though.
BTW, at the same time there was a LVT firing it's 75, - it was definately slower, but I don't know why.

Oh:
"Also the muzzle blast from heavy Arty was visible for MILES... Even in Daylight... Would make them easy to find..."

On those Mortars, not so noticable, - on a bright day that is.

get some 37 and 75mm  artillery that can be jacked to an M3 or jeep and taken around,it could be like a CV gun,you could land spot targets.it would be cool, artillery did play a big part in the war.
