Hey guys. As most of you may know, I am new to this community, and I've been having troubles with the sheer difficulties of this game...
But last night, and today, I've finally gotten the hang of it. =D I can accurately shoot an AI (yes, just an AI for now, multiplayer will come later when I'm more experienced) out of the sky, and with a mouse as well. I practiced hard all day, the first day I got the game (which was about 3 days ago), and it sure paid off. =D I shot down 4 enemy planes the second night, and 13 enemy planes this noon. 17 kills! Hoorah!
Sorry if this is going off subject, but yeah, just wanted to let this out in the public...xD

Although you are only practicing there is no better practice than trying to shoot at other players in the MA.
-
If you plan on entering multiplayer, let me tell you this:
Prepare to get shot down. A lot.
:)

True enough ,but i give you big props for trying OFFLINE before comin into MA and spray and prayin at anything that moves like most of the new kids do, try to stick with someone for a while work as a team it will go even farther i know most vets dont want to stick with new ones but if your a knit and want a wing ill try and help ya out. im not a "rank" person and i pretty much only fly p40E but ill work with ya anytime :)

Congrats! I just love watching those drones explode! Then they re appear out of thin air! It's like a buffet of planes that you can just make explode. Of course, it is alot more satisfying in the MA, because alot of people make you work for it.
-
Congrats on your kills!!!!
May I suggest to you a stick prior to making the leap into the Main Arenas.
Good cheap starter stick can be purchased for under $25.00 (stay away from Logitek)..
I use the Siatek ST290Pro and its only $25.00 works fairly well, but lacks enough hats for my liking..
And when you do make the leap to the arenas dont be discouraged you are going to get killed (as stated) ALOT.. But you will learn faster and in a few months you will be killing more than you get killed..
Welcome and Enjoy!!!

I'm still waiting for that day....boy it's gonna be GREAT!

Yes, I've had my 290 for 4-5 years now and it still works great.

I just bought a Saitek Aviator. Pretty nice starter stick. 40 bucks. Enough buttons. The only problem I have is the throttle is in front of the stick so you have to reach around the stick for the throttle.
-
I use a Saitek Cyborg Evo, a wireless stick.
Great stick, has a knob to change the 3 buttons below the hat up or down, a knob to tilt those buttons left or right, and another knob you can take out and move the wrist rest up or down.
I'd reccommend it if you want a wireless stick, but you need to change batteries every few days, so get some rechargables and a station and sit it on your desk.

Welcome to the addiction.
Good luck

Welcome and enjoy-like ^^^^ said-- the addiction! I'm still bad but still learning, if you need some basics, let me know. But get out there and fly in the main-get shot down and learn the basics! Have fun - and stay off 200 (you'll get it later)

Same here. I'll wing up with anyone who wants to play seriously, but with a friendly smile and sense of humor. And I'll impart whatever I know to whomever seems genuinely interested in really "learning" about ACM, AND any of the other challenging facets of the game.
Scorepotatos, Whiners, Ego Boosters, and Griefers need not apply. :D

Huh? I've been playing for almost 2 years and I still get killed more than I kill! :)

The following is only my opinion, and it's worth what you paid for it.
Definitely get a stick soonest, don't waste you're time flying with a mouse. Any cheap stick is 16 times better than using a mouse. Inexpensive sticks have already been recommended, so if you have the money for a permanent, quality stick here's the low down as I see it.
Very best for quality, reliability and long life is CH sticks (stick and throttle units, and rudder pedals, if you want). But they are initially very expensive, something in the $300+ range, I think, but very economical in the long term as they are solidly built and seem to last.
Thrustmaster is supposed to have a top quality stick or two, but I really don't know anything about them.
Next are the Saitek sticks, which are very popular, as mentioned before. The new X52 Pro (separate joystick and throttle units, rudder pedals additional) being their top of the line at between $155-$200 depending on where you buy. The Pro has pretty much an identical layout as the original X52 (around $100-120 and sure to drop with the new X52 out), and it seems a little sturdier and supposedly more reliable long term (we'll see, as I just bought one). Either of these two sticks provide a massive amount of button and trigger controls (as does the CH). Additionally, many people use the X45 by Saitek as well.
Being able to map critical flight controls to your stick is an advantage over a keyboard unless you are very, very proficient in blindly hitting keys during a fight.
I would next suggest if you don't already have one, get a microphone for radio communication. A cheap $10-15 mic works just fine. You plug it in, see if you can record and playback in Windows and you're good to go in AH. Communication is the most limiting and critical factor in this game if you wish to learn and train with someone, and engage in any coordinated combat with others. There are a very few who can communicate efficiently via keyboard in the game, but it's still too slow in a hot furball.
Finally, make sure your views are set up properly. Ask a vet if you don't know if they are. Cardinal rule of ACM is never, ever lose sight of your enemy, and if you don't have them set up correctly and position you're pilot in the cockpit just where you want him, you will die more often than necessary by at least double.
Hope this is helpful.

...Thinks it would be rather salamanderish of me to reply regarding the 9 weeks it took me in AH to get over that 1:1 hurdle....Thinking it would be even more salamanderish to neglect mentioning comming directly from 5 years of a similar flight sim. Nah, I won't do it.
Oops, aaa, accidently hit that submit button

I don't see any salamanderishness in it. You openly admit that it took you a embarassing 9 full weeks to get there. ;)
Now if somebody would say he broke that threshold in his first 2 weeks... :D
-
technically I could claim 5 weeks, but as a matter of record, my first positive kill ratio tour ended on my 9th week in the game :)

I'm always up to fly with someone. I am not part of a squad so I usually just go to where I am needed. If you are Bish and want someone to fly with you let me know. I am by no means a good pilot but I do well enough and have a strong basic understanding of the game. I fly on days I don't have duty or am not at sea so my schedule is to chaotic to plan out. I use the same handle in game if you want to look me up.
Now if I could only learn to beat slapshot...

Hey Sloe, good to see you're still around. I was a squady before I deployed to the gulf for fun in the sand. I flew by MCU2Papa. Hope to hook back up with you guys and Twodogs.
Anyone from JG3 is a good person to fly with and I can personnaly vouch that any skill I have came from their tutalage (sp?).
Got an email or website for JG3 Sloe?
