Last night my daughter is watching TV in the other room when suddenly she yells out "Heyyyy! what the heck?
Daddy I was watching my show and the TV went black But I can still hear the sound"
Me: "try changing channels. Maybe cable is messed up again"
Her:: "Nope. Its doing it on all the channels"
Always being a firm beleiver in "one personal observation is worth 1,000 reports" I walk into the livingroom to see for myself. Sure enough No picture. The sound doesnt surprise me as I have it running through the stereo and the TV sond is turned all the way down.
So I think turn the TV off, then back on again. Typically on the old Trusty Magnavox I'll see a channel number before the picture comes in..Nothing. Little light is lit telling me the set is on, but no picture. And the sound that I thought was completely turned down is making a weird humming noise.
Sure enough,
Its dead
Oh Damn it all to hell!
I'm heartbroken :D
Crushed :D :D
Devistated even! :D :D :D
Oh the Humanity!
Whatever will I do? :D :D

Samsung, LG or VISIO if you are looking for an LCD HD unit. Those three have the best picture quality that I have seen. I bought my mother-in-law a Visio 30" LCD HD last christmas and it has very good picture quality for her to watch Anderson Cooper and Nancy Grace.

You know, TV repairmen still exist. It may be worth the $50 to have one come out and check it. Repair costs under 1/2 the price of a new set are better than plunking down > $1000 for a new HD TV. Unless you really needed a reason to go out and get an HD set...

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
While I dont ask permission of my wife to buy what I want for myself.
New computer, upgrades to computer, something for the kids etc
And likewise she doesnt ask me
Something like this we would agree on together as to what to do.
Now we have both been talking about getting at least a 42" HD
Particularly since She started watching "Planet Earth"
We really havent had the excuse.
Well now we have a double reason.
Reason A. The TV died
Reason B Today is our 23rd
(or is it 24th? I forget) wedding anniversary
now I ask you. what better gift could we get each other then a brandy new HD TV?
-
Congrats Dred!

After I bought my little portable TV I took my big TV out and emptied a 30 round magazine into it.
My living room is much more pleasant now.

And I think a 50 would look right pretty on a 14 foot wide wall dont you?
:D

<--Has a Samsung 52" LCD HD Tv with DLP....ohhhhh.....you are so in for a treat.
I also bought a Bose 3-2-1 system. I just couldn't get past that HUGE price tag to have the BOSE system I wanted. No to mention the wife:lol
When we bought this whole setup it was right before the Rose Bowl when my beloved LONGHORNS won the national championship. I was in Heaven watching it in HD with the sound.
Anyway we have since put ceramic tile in the living room. The quality of sound NOW vs. Carpet is really quite amazing.
I hope you enjoy your new TV Dred....HD is great....ALSO...they have a show on early..cant remember the name of the HD channel....its called Sunrise Earth.....BEAUTIFUL.

That's what I told myself when my Magnavox "died". Told the repair guy if the estimate was over $100 scrap the tv because I was dying to buy a new Panasonic HD tv. Estimate was for $75 so I'm stuck watching the Oregon State Beavers play on a crappy 32" CRT! :cry
Congrates and enjoy your next purchase DRED!
Add Panasonic to your list.

already have.
Im doing comparisons and reading reviews looking for best bang/buck ratio to fit my wallet
Surprised at the more or less positive reviews Vizio gets.
but after looking at all sorts of sights and reading all sorts of reviews I've come to the obviousl conclusion that Im gonna have to go and look at them all for myself for a final determination.
Im in no great rush as there are curently 4 other working TVs in the house.
One in each bedroom and one in the room I have my computer in. A true testiment to my hatred of "Barney", Chick Flicks, and endless reruns of the Simpsons. Not to mention my desire to watch what I want to watch, when I want to watch it. LOL
Saved ALOT of fights this way.
Its just that they all only have basic cable the one in the living room is the one with the digital box and the room where we gather to watch movies,Sporting events or shows that we all share a common intrest in.
Foo its off Bass fishing tomorrow morning. Then After that. Store hopping.

For all you guys clinging to your old CRT sets (and for the life of me I can't figure out why) you might as well start shopping now. In Feb '09 analog broadcasting will stop and everything will be in HD. Right now there is an oversupply of sets (mostly 720p and lower) and prices are cheap. As the deadline approaches those cheap sets will disappear and prices will climb.

Not trying to sound sarcastic. but I can understand why.
Because for many people. Even a mere $2-300 for a new set just isnt in the budget. Let alone $400 on up for a HD set.
Hell I'd be willing to wager that the $15 some people spend here even is the one thing that keeps them feeling human
-
This Christmas those $700 42" plasmas will be $500 and less. After all the overstock is sold the price will climb and in a few months you will be forced to upgrade anyway. The only drawback to buying the cheap sets is most are 720p.

I didn't know anyone actually was a Whorns fan......and here I thought it was just some myth....

So you are saying the old analog tv sets will no longer function?
-
That's exactly what I'm saying. All broadcasting will be digital. Unless you have a sattelite, cable or buy a new tuner your analog TV will not work. The old TV freq's are going to be reassigned.
-
While I don't watch the news, my wife does. I would think that something of this magnitude would be all over the news warning people to buy new digital TVs before February.
What is your source for this information?

Ill use my house as a discription.
If I include the TV that just died I have 5 TV sets in my house
None have digital TV tuners in them
And only only 1 is connected to the Digital Cable box.
If I left everything as is and didnt buy any new sets
As of Feb 2009 The only set that would be able to receive broadcasts woudl be the one that has the Digital Cable Box.
In essence I would have to get Digital cable boxes for all my other sets (4)through my cable company.
Orrr Buy Digital to analog converter boxes.
From the FAQ at that site
Once broadcasters transition from analog to digital, will analog televisions will be obsolete?
No. Set-top boxes which convert digital signals to analog signals are available now and will continue to be available at lower prices to consumers as the transition progresses. However, to enjoy the full benefits of Digital TV, including superior sound and clarity, you must own a Digital TV set. An analog television, with the addition of a set-top box, will still allow viewers to enjoy all of the programming they have always enjoyed.
Will I need a new TV?
Your current television will work as it does now until analog broadcasting stops. Even after the transition is over, your current TV will not become obsolete. A converter box can be used to receive broadcast DTV signals and change them into the format of your current television. In addition, if you use your analog set with a multichannel pay service like cable or satellite, it will continue to work as it always has. Even with a converter box, however, your current analog television will not be capable of displaying the full picture quality of DTV. To enjoy the full picture quality, you must have a DTV set. Subscribers to cable and DBS services should contact their providers regarding converter boxes for those services.
