I believe there were actually 4 Gladiators, but one was kept in reserve.

Originally 8, but 4 were returned still crated.

Film is great, facts are wrong. Timber Woods was killed over Greece in a Hurricane in 1941, not over Malta in a Gladiator in 1940, and  John Waters was not crippled in a crash in a Gladiator, in fact he was not crippled at all.
