Title: Well, THAT'S gratitude for ya.
Post by: Saxman on July 01, 2007, 03:49:55 AM
So I'm scrambling to defend a base in LWO, and as I'm vectoring out on my climb I see three dots coming in, definitely hostiles. All the other friendlies are back at base dealing with a Nit tank rush, so I turn back for home, continuing my climb hoping to get above the bad guys and buy enough time to get some help.

Well, as I'm watching, something seems odd, as the bogies aren't coming straight in. Rather, it seems as if they were in the middle of a fight, which pulls them down to the deck. Curious, and handed an altitude advantage, I decide to check things out.

As I draw closer I pick up their cons. A Nit Spitfire and Ki-84, ganging on a Bish Spitfire. The lone Bish is now running out on the deck for all he's worth, and neither Nit con seemed to have any idea I was there as they're headed away from me.

As I'm otherwise clear, and with plenty of alt, I roll in targeting the Ki, which at this point is the trailer. I'm coming in hot, and either the Frank sees me, or decides to give up on his pursuit of the lone Bish, as he pulls off to the right and begins to climb. I have plenty of E at this point, so press my run on the Nit Spitfire, who is continuing his pursuit of the Bish (in retrospect, the two Nits at least must have never seen me coming, as the Spit made no effort to evade until I had already closed to gun range and lined him up). One quick burst is all it took to flame the Nit Spixteen, and as he went down I pulled off into a hard climbing turn to the left to regain my altitude while watching for the Frank, as I was expecting him to have tried to come to his wingman's rescue. There's no sign of him, however the Bish Spixteen, whose tail I just cleared, has apparently decided now was a good time to engage, as he has reversed and is climbing hard on my six.

Seeing as it was just the two of us, I enter a shallow diving turn to the left to regain some airspeed, then gradually tightened it up into a low-Yo until I had reversed. While I attempted to keep out of phase to dodge the HO (rudder and negative-Gs) the Spit made every effort to FORCE it, not only on the first pass, but EVERY time we came around on each other and I got guns on him the Spit tried to force a HO, at one point managing to land some hits that perforated my main tank and knocked out one of my landing gear (I was in my 1A, so still had my wing tank reserves. Good thing, too, 'cause he got my tank GOOD and it was empty only a minute or two later). Finally as we came around again, I had just enough angle that I could fire from slightly high on his front-quarter without him getting a shot in return, and shredded one of his wings.

Thing is, thinking that Frank was still out there--and now with altitude--I was perfectly happy to take my one kill and let the Bish bug for home after dusting off his six. What away to show one's gratitude.

Tell you what, sometimes it just doesn't pay to be the nice guy.

He probably thought you were one of the group that he was orginally engaged with.

Seems to be typical Late War conduct.

If you drain the Wing Tanks first, which doesn't take that long, that F4U-1-A becomes a totally different bird.

I drain them down to 1/8  each to leave myself a little extra for just such an emergency.

Anyway, as a point of order if I'd wanted to press for the kill I easily could have done so on my initial pass once I shot that Spixteen off his tail.

I bet he wasent even looking at the Icon...but he should have known that cleared his six.....
Should have stayed lined up and gottem both.

I'd have to say the Bish was an bellybutton for not and getting out of Dodge

Oh, I got both of them anyway. I wish I knew what the deal with that Ki-84 was, because he wasn't behaving as if he saw me diving in, and he made no effort to back up his buddy after he pulled off the Bish Spit.

Sounds like the ki was an extremely new player or he was pilot wounded by the bish spit earlier in the fight and realized it was time to head back.

I am surprised that, with all the E you had after you killed the nit spit, the bish spit was able to reverse into you with any chance of catching you once you went vertical. Unless there was more seperation between you guys than I am imagining.

So, you got a 1v1 in a late war arena, you won...and you are complaining about the initial circumstances?  Numpty!

I can tell you from my point of view, when I look back, I look to see if it is red.  Not which little chess piece is in the corner.  And with bullets flying, who cares.  LOL, when you shot the spit, some rounds probably flew past him too.  He probably thought someone kill shot himself.

But on behalf of the Bish pilot, Thanks.

Feel better now?  :D

Man, I hate those guys that run until you break off then they turn around. Then you turn around and the run again... :(

Steve: Actually, it started as a 2v1v1

sqrl: I fly tracers off, so doubtful.

trotter: The Bish was a Spixteen, which defy all laws of physics and energy management so I'm no longer surprised when I see one blow all his E on a hard reversal, and suddenly be watching him close in on my 6 even though I'm nose down at 400mph. I had one encounter where time I was diving on a Spixteen in a merge power-on, he was climbing UP to me, and despite my E surplus, as I blew past him and was zooming back up I look back to see he had not only REVERSED, but was sitting 600 out and CLOSING.

I'd have shot the two guys in back just so they couldn't "steal" my kill on the guy in front, hehehe!

Sounds like the Bish never saw you coming and probably didn't even notice you were a rook and not a nit.

He's probably been checking six, looking forward, checking six etc. As soon as he saw you breaking, he turned to engage his chasers - happens all the time. Probably never even noticed you weren't the Spit or KI.

Seems to be an epidemic lately. They run for ever till you brake off then rinse & repeat as long as they have enough gas to continue. What lame arses
