Title: Happy Birthday America
Post by: Maverick on July 03, 2007, 06:08:17 PM
To all from and living in this country. Have a happy and safe 4th of July. Remember those in harms way and say thinks to those who went in harms way to help preserve this nation.

I'm sorry if I've made a mistake in the number of years :(  I thought you won the Revolutionary War in 1783?

Here's to 231 more years! :)

You're correct, Treaty of Paris was definitely 1783.
Declaration was 1776, lasted until Treaty of Paris 1783. wtg viking :)

and I just want to say 1100 years ago (some thing like that) the Vikings discovered North America! Thank you Vikings, but really our Independents comes from the rediscovery of North America by Columbus. Thanks Chris!

Oh yea and the French! Our longest allied and hopefully our longest allied.

Viking, I had been wondering why I automatically thought 1776, and you automatically though 1783 when talking about the independence of America.

Even when I wrote that above, I didn't get it:)
But I do now.

We Americans recognize the declaration of our independence (1776) as the time our independence began.

The rest of the world didn't acknowledge or recognize the independence until the Treaty of Paris ~ at the end of the revolutionary war ~ 1783.

And I'm sure that's how each of us teaches our next generation: we teach ours that we became an independant nation 1776; everyone else teaches their next generations that America gained it's independence only after the war, and use the 1783 date.

Interesting. Just goes to show how historical accuracy is relevant to the observer. 231 years it is then! :)

As a side note I can add that my country's constitution and declaration of independence (from the union with Sweden) was written in 1814. However we didn't actually gain our independence until 17th of May 1905. So the 17th of May is our independence day, or "National Day" as we call it (as in the day we became a nation).

I recently bought the whole schoolhouse rock collection on dvd for my kids. They're almost too old for that... but needed the multiplication song *grin*

The important part in all of that that got overlooked in the discussion is that you were wishing us well on the b-day. *grin*
Thanks Viking
