Title: Rudder Bug?
Post by: DoLbY on July 03, 2007, 08:21:55 PM
I've play this game for quite some time and for the time being due to not having an active account, I'm stuck flying offline.

I don't know if this is a problem during online play, offline or it is just something that I am having problems with.

I noticed in all the planes I fly (My plane would be the P-51D), now and then my plane will bounce around as if I was putting pressure into the rudder when I don't have my hand on it. It lasts only just half a second but sometimes so vicious that it'll cause me to fly way off course. Very rarely but I have noticed it has happened when I was in dives. I have tried        re-calibrate, adjust the slides. I use a Saiteck Cyborg that I have had for an few years so it is possible it might be that, but has this happened in regular online play or it something that is just happening to me? Any feed back on this would be appriecated. I do hope to see everyone online soon, familiar faces or newer peps :)

Okay, think I figured it out. I was flying around with same problem. I disconnected the joystick and made attempt to fly with mouse; I noticed it wasn't doing it then so guessing it's time to get a new JS soon.

However, any other suggestions I might try ?

Yep, looks clearly as if your Z axis suffers from heavy spiking. I'm afraid the only temporary solution is to disengage the Z-axis and using keyboard only for rudder control, until you get a new stick.
I had to do the same when the same axis on my (then 4years old) Saitek Cyborg started to spike excessively. However, as this is the only trouble with this stick, I still use it, having acquired pedals 1 1/2 years ago.

Thanks Lus :aok

I noticed when I recalibrate my JS about 3-4 times, it still does it but not as often, but still in fact does. What do you suggest would be the best rudder keys to use on my keyboard?

Thinking of getting some pedals eventually as well.

They should be already mapped... I think it was A & D, with S recentering your rudder.

You can also tick the "advanced" checkbox in the stick mapping and set yourself up with some dead band, and damping.  Depending on the severity of the problem this might make it liveable.

You could even try using your mouse as the rudder and one of the buttons as center?? Maybe better than using keyboard?? Dunno, just an idea...

Interesting one, and theroretically that should work. But is it practical? Right handedness assumed, you would have to use the mouse with your left hand, which sounds a bit awkwark to me.  Especially when considering you still have to use your left hand for throttle & such (either on keyboard or joystick); and when going back to mouse with that hand it's very easy to move it involuntary...

My guess: Keyboard would be better.

You could well be right about the practicality of it. T'was just a quick thought - and perhaps even worth trying?

I just tried it, but it does not work the way you proposed.

You can only assign "Analog Inputs Yaw" to the mouse X-axis. While that moves the rudder just fine, mapping the "center rudder" button to the mouse has no effect. I guess that would work only when using a non analog axis = buttons for rudder control.

Sweet. Oh well... Thanks for trying it out anyway, so quickly too :)

You are right in that it cannot work if you have a axis mapped for rudder. Problem for me with mapping axes is that the damn thing is very difficult to then center.

Actually it could work......if you have a three button mouse:

Assign buttons as rudder left, rudder right and rudder center.

;) :)

I was having hard time trying to get my mouse to work for rudder when JS is activited. I been just accepting the fact my rudder is spiked and if it keeps getting worse, i'll just have to turn it off (ruds) completely until I can get an new JS - I used to play for longest time without rudders but going to be hard to re-learn since i been using them for so long :(

Just use keyboard rudder - it's better than no rudder at all.

I had to turn the keyboard on for it - Even though it'll take me awhile to get used to, you are right, better than no rudder at all...:aok

Dolby, you could try to set your rudder back to stick, then click advanced tab, enable scaling, then stairstep the sliders. Depending on where the spiking is occurring, this can help greatly, then set some deadpan this will help if spiking is just off center. Dampen the axis may help as this will slow input and may allow you to continue you to use JS for rudder.
If you play with these settings you might solve most of the problem,But as Lusche said, pedals will fix it for sure.:aok

I turned my rudders back on for my JS and its lot worse now. I know something in the JS is broken because now and then when I moving it, i hear a 'pop' sound; Now I can't even turn my rudder to the right at all and barely to the left.

Beginning of next month, going to look into getting some Pedals. Hopefully Best Buy has some

Might want to invest in a new stick first. If part of it's broken, you don't know what's going to fail next.

No use spending 2x the money on rudder pedals when the "roll" stops functioning in a month, if you see my point.

Yes definetly. I was going to buy a new stick and if the rudders aren't spiking then I know it was the old JS. But i'm considering getting pedals at an later point because it seems it seems to help out alot (after getting used to it of course) but who knows, maybe i'll stick with twisty stick after all

Some swear by twisty, some swear by pedals. I was twisty for many years. I've been pedals for less than one year, but I think they are a big improvement.

my son's twisty stick did the exact same thing, would be flying normal, then snap roll, looked back and the rudder was acting haywire.

Now being the person that I am, I simply took the stick apart, and placed a few drops of 3 in 1 oil on the micro switch where the twisty stick turns, and wouldn't you know, it fixed it :aok

My sticks hat switches started to not work to the front right, took it apart and placed some 3 in 1 oil in the micro switch, and it now works fine.

I was thinking about doing that with mine but knowing me, i'd probably ruin the stick completely...
