Title: It looks like the WB players are gone
Post by: Killjoy2 on July 05, 2007, 09:48:04 PM
There seem to be very few WB players left in AH.  Most of the posts appear to be from Air Warrior players.

So what happened to WB players?

Oh, but I beg to differ :)

Brought my whole squad of 20+ here from WB...and just this week picked up 3 more old friends from other WB squads.

My group has been together since 97-98 in WB 2.7...with some of us having flown in WB even earlier but in other groups.

I wish I posted a lot more in the AH forums, like I did in WB. I was very active in the community there, made movies and other stuff, was a trainer & CM for a short while....but to be honest now that Im here I prefer to spend all my time actually FLYING! :D

Heck, a WB player just join the Might WidowMakers today.  Several WM's are former WB players.

Recently dumped my WB account, may reopen an S3 only account, if that's possible, in the fall.

Not hard to find a fight or a mission, even as a Knight, in the LW arenas here but I'll will miss the S3 style setup and the effort that goes into the once a week 3 hour one life event. Salvan can relate.
Some of the biggest issues the S3 had were Ien related IMO. I think that the event has outgrown the rate / lack of development.
A lot of work has gone into really great historical terrains but FM and DM short falls as well as a poor AI routine (ground) have dampened my interest in WB.

I like being able to grab a Spit and pick a fight and know there will be a lot of action no matter the time or day of the week it is in AH.

Flew WB for years on and off under different names.  Also flew its WWI incarnation Dawn of Aces for a while.

Most of the GMB's are all from WB's, and the Barbary Corsairs are coming back up to speed in AH as well.

Don't be fooled - I think many of us had the same problem I had - getting something close to your WB's callsign didn't work, and we came on under different names.

The answer for that is to call htc.

When WBs new guys show up, have them call and see if the CPID is not in use, they can have it if it's not active so that shouldn't stop them.

Ex WB here, and saw Blumax from the WB 4th FG (Now Blue2Max) in the arena for the first time the other night.

Theres an awful lot of us around, just a lot have changed names for one reason or another. Seems like every other week I'm either recognizing a name or someone recognizes me from the old days.

Every once in a while I'll even see a name that makes be break out in a cold sweat and start drinking heavily, until I remember they're supposedly on my side now (Savlan, I'm looking suspiciously at you...)

I had no idea Jaxxo could reproduce.  :)

It's great to see some of the WB players check in.  I thought they were all gone.

I wonder what the ratio of WB'ers to AW players is.  I feel like the WB players have by and large moved on and there are vastly more AW players now.

Oh, I dont know. It seems that whenever ingame I usually get a "WB's blkmgc?" on private, only to get a "I was xxxxx in WB's" as a response. Even after being back here for a number of months. I dont think many post here, but I think that there are quite a few ingame. A good number of the 550th moved over here and now make up the 484th.

Jaxxon,

We are in the FSO ( Friday Squad Ops ) which is patterened in the image of S3, but dare I say....more fun.  Why?

Well, its 3 weeks on & one week off.  So, its a new scenario every month.  I find this keeps things fresh.  In S3 with 5 weeks, and the occasional week interruption due to snafu or a holiday, and your talking almost 2 months flying the same scenario - no matter how well designed, it gets a little long in the tooth, IMHO.

A side effect of the 3 weeks on is that it becomes like a sports playoff, best 2 of 3. There has always been a declared victor since Ive been in FSO - no 'like kissing your sister' ties.

Of course, a dedicated and productive terrain team that provides historic accurate terrains for the FSO designers makes things more interesting as well. This is thanks to HTC who provide all the content creation tools to the community. Now I dont have to pretend that Malta is Guadalcanal anymore :)

Like S3, FSO is one life, but 2 hours instead of 3...thus the frames are designed to get you to the action quicker, without spending 2 hours of cat and mouse chase the radar contacts stuff. Also, all targets must be hit within the first hour, so no end of frame NOE stuff by your opponents while you are landing.  I now spend more time simulating a combat pilot in a historic situation and less time simulating the relationship between a pilot and his ground control:)

All the dedicated planning is here, as well.  There is a dedicated forum here provided by HTC (imagine that! - look under squad operations ) and a AH Events website as well ( http://ahevents.org/site/ ) with all the info. Most planning is done via a CO/XO email list, and not the boards, so its not as visible here as in S3.

Oh, and the logs just plain work, and scores are posted usually about 1-2 hrs after the event at the ahevents website.  A very nice S6 like breakdown is given.

Did I mention that the kill buffer is turned off in these events? Very engrossing to not have a kill confirmation when that wounded bird escapes you. And not only is it one life, but one airframe. Exit and your done. You can rearm & refuel at your airfield, though :)

FSO is based on squad committment to participation & a squad must give a  estimate of attendance ( for side balancing for the CM's ).  If you'd like to try it with some fellow Ex WB'ers, drop me a line so I can figure into our force figures.  If you like ( and its OK with your CO ) you can even join my group just for the FSO, and fly in the other arenas under your current squad.

FSO is Friday nights, 11pm EST.

This has been a public service announcement - Ok Roc, this commercial will cost ya 20 bucks! :) :)

The game callsigns are different so I cant figure how anybody can know how many are here, or aren't.

I used to be +taur+ in Warbirds, with 416 RCAF. Still here, as many others are.

There may be a reason Jaxxo doen't have an "n" at the end of his PID.

I had an account in the AH I days under the PID "jaxxon" and closed the account in favor of a WW2OL account. Guess they never retired my PID.

Savlan and Scottydawg and thanks for the event info.
Friday nights seem like a better time to hold these and 11 pm fits 'cause I'm a bit nocturnal (shift work does it to me). At this moment I have no CO in Aces High. I'm still learning how things work here and haven't had time to map things to the settings I'm used to like mouse clicking six calls.
All that being said, settings are much the same as WBs. An example, I really have to play with rudder and trim settings 'cause I can't even get an Hog off the runway never mind a CV. That's where I realized how dumbed down the FMs are in WB 3 compared to what they were in 2.73.

I may drop you a line later Savlan.

From the post, it seems you are re-learning Aces High after an extended leave of absence (since AH 1 days?). If I have mis-read this (and it is possible I have) then please ignore the following.

If this is the case, there are several ways to take off in a F4U. First you can use auto takeoff. Second you can pull the stick back 25% (or maybe it's 50%?) to lock the tail wheel. Third, just use rudder. Have your rudder calibrated (whether twisty or pedals) and just rudder yourself back straight. It is much easier with pedals to do a hands-free takeoff (IMO). The corsair, along with a select few other planes, is not easy to take off in without practice. It also has quirks when landing (as do those other select planes), and you may touch down safely only to find yourself ground looping moments later. If you really are re-learning from scratch I would very much suggest something similar to a F4U, but not an F4U. Try an F6F, for example. Move back to the F4U after a lot of practice.

Hi!

Ex-WBirder myself, came to AH in Tour 33 and stayed. The squad moved first but I had to hang on due to a very slow machine...

Managed to keep my callsign, "r" cropped and everything...When I moved and waited for a phone line for 6 months, I kept paying my subscription to keep my callsign...

Still flying around, still in 249 after all these years...

Thanks Krusty, how to lock the tail wheel was what I was looking for.
Locking the tail wheel in WB isn't nessesary and the rudder will always return to center which I don't think happens on take off in AH, although in flight it does. In IL2 there is a key stroke to lock the tail wheel and I thought there would be here but could never find it. As for auto take off :rofl I'd never use it, I feel a little dweebish for using combat trim.

Squire; Sniper becomes Chanter :huh thought he be Piper or something along those lines, didn't he take up the Bag pipes? :)

I may just take you up on that offer.
