Title: Huge Propane Explosion in Korea
Post by: Seagoon on July 05, 2007, 09:48:52 PM
We were discussing using propane as an explosive in another thread, and there were some doubts about its destructive potential. I got sent a link to a video that shows what can happen when you have enough and it gets superheated...

Really gives you a different perspective on the power under your BBQ grill. Along those lines we had a house in a nearby development burn to the ground after the propane tank under a grill on their deck exploded.

Although clearly explosive, it's not very efficient.  Then again, we'd probably have far fewer planes and trains blowing up if these guys strapped BBQ Grill propane tanks to their backs.  Hard to sneak around with one of those.

If yer lookin' to damage some real estate perhaps something that burns a bit hotter would work better. If you just wanna cook a few people, propane and propane accessories will do the job.

Yes, it's destructive, but how many canisters did that take?  Just by my quick top of the head calculations, that had 150 standard grill canisters lined up, plus more larger ones.

Well, propane tanks are very powerfull explosives if they aren't punctured or opened. When they get so hot they burst, and then the gas ignites, it's pretty powerfull.

If only there was some way to sneak say 30+ gallons of a high energy liquid with more explosive potential than propane into a crowded area....

Oh wait, there is, it's called a car.

C'mon silly people, this is just sticking beans up your nose.  There are more ways to die than there are to stay alive, and panicking over all the possible ways is a good way to lose sleep, but not a great way to live.

I don't see or read about anyone panicking, do you? Being angry about some religious wackos attempting mass murder is at least somewhat justified doncha think? Even if they were comically inept.

called a BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Evaporating Vapor Explosion) I believe but don’t quote me.  Funny i vaguely remember 200 plus propane tanks being stolen in Denver several years back.  I thought ‘wow what would someone want with that many propane tanks?’ :(

The great advantage to propane is not that it is extremely explosive, nor easy to conceal, obviously modern plastic explosives or even TNT are far better on both those counts. The great advantage to propane is that its completely uncontrolled and anyone can buy as much as they want. This is obviously critical considering the bombing rings that have been busted have often been taken down because they were seeking more complex explosives and detonators. Unfortunately, as news media reveals how the cells were detected and broken up, the Jihadis change their tactics.

It was apparently used to great effect in the Al-Khilani mosque bombing (a Sunni attack on a Shi'ite shrine) in June of this year, the trigger in this case was TNT in placed into a truck loaded with 60 or so propane tanks:

Quote
Jabbar Mohammed al-Kaissi, an eyewitness to the blast was across the street filling a five-liter gas can “when a truck carrying what he estimated was 60 canisters of gas exploded, sending canisters flying through the air, creating secondary explosions when they landed as far as 100 yards away.” He saw a ball of fire rise into the air and turning back to see the car holding his wife and three daughters saw the wall of the mosque fall on it crushing and killing them. "I was frozen by the shock. As I rushed to the car to see if I could save any of them, the gas canisters started to explode one after the other." [From the Wiki article on the bombing]

Incidentally, British news organizations are now reporting that the London bombs did not go off because of a "faulty syringe" in the detonator. It occurs to me that the Guardian could headline the report with Britons Saved by National Health Yet Again ;)

The important thing is the only people who were hurt were the terrorists. Take that Osama!

Nothing like a helpful analysis so the terrorists can build a better bomb next time.

Or maybe that's disinformation.  We can only hope.
