Having been trying to give up smoking for a while, things aren't going too bad...with the exception of this nicotine gum giving me bloody hiccups each and every time....I mean, wth is that all about?

I don't smoke, so I gave up pop/soda the 1st of the year.  I never got the caffeine withdraw headaches that I thought I would get.  I accidentally got served a Sprite today instead of water and it tasted like syrup.  I don't know how I used to go through 4-6 cans a day before.

Congrats on quitting, it's been 5 months since I had my last cigarette. I used the Commit lozenge and I occasionaly get the hiccups when I use them. It is a side effect of the lozenge, didn't know it was for the gum as well. I never had much luck with the gum but the lozenges seem to be doing the trick for me.

One trick you can try that works with the lozenge is don't swallow your spit. I actually try not to produce a lot of saliva when I'm using the lozenge, (I tuck it up between my cheek and gums), if I roll it around in my mouth then I produce more saliva and then I end up getting the hiccups.

Truthfuly the hiccups don't last that long for me when I do get them, and they would be worth it as long as I'm not smoking.

These hiccups are definitely not small little ones, think "reach down to your anklebones from the inside" kinda hiccups...and you'll be close. Beats smoking tho, and makes my daily calls with senior management pretty funny...spend more time apologising that talking...lol......ah well, time for another peice of gum.......:lol

20 Years now :)  I smoked cause I liked it.  Quit cause I met a wonderful woman who didn't like it, so no big deal, I stopped smoking. Don't crave a thing, never did, and smoked for 10 years.

I get a kick out of all the products out there trying to help people quit smoking.

It's really easy to figure out.  If you continually Try to quit, then you don't want to quit.  Don't kid yourself.  Light up, don't fall into that trap.  You either want to smoke or you don't.  There are no degrees, no phases, no increments, no debates, no "steps".

Here's a neat trick to prove my point.  Take a hammer, any size will do, they all are effective.  Now, start smacking your head with that hammer.  Ok, now, "Try" to stop.

Look it's easy, that hurt like hell, so you Stop, do you chew gum and have cravings for that headache?  Nope, not so much.  Toss the stupid gum.  Quit smoking if you Want to quit and move on with your life.

It takes the human body exactly 2 weeks to break a habit.  2 weeks.  If you constantly Try to break the habit, you never actually do, so that 2 weeks never comes.  Come on, you're stronger than that.  All the advertising saying that you Need help to quit, It's a marketing trick to recapture some of the cash that you Now have available because you don't smoke anymore.  Fool and his money, and all that.

If you want to quit smoking, put the damned thing out.

I totaly disagree! I quit on the 5th of April using Chantix.  I have never been able to quit cold turkey. Tried many times. Tried gum and patches too. Quit using the Chantix a couple of weeks ago. So far so good. The hiccups come from indigestion caused by the gum/lozange or whatever. Tums is your friend.

Of course having a strong desire to live for at least 20 more years with my new wife to be had a lot to do with my ability to quit too. I can breathe without rattling now. I love it. I do still crave the cigs when I don't have much to do and I did gain about 22lbs since I quit but I will never go back to smoking again.

Do whatever it takes to quit. It's worth it.

Mark

My old man quit cold turkey, and if he can - truly anyone could....of course he had to have a massive heart attack to give him the compulsion to do it!

my oldest sister was a dragon lady consuming 2 to 4 packs a day.
She got on this stuff and has quit. If it works for her, it'll work for anyone.

Couple of weeks ago I grew tired of the taste of Coke, which happens sometimes, and I switched to a grape soda. No caffeine or sugar and it's refreshing, even too much so. My head felt a bit "tight" for couple of days, but then the feeling wore off.

I've never smoked though. Never got the idea of it, just nothing good in it.
