Title: Man, thats some good pilot armor
Post by: Treize69 on July 06, 2007, 11:25:18 PM
Nailed this 109K in the MA tonight, on my front end it looked like I'd nailed the pilot, but he didn't die, so I figured I'd probably just wounded him. But since he was nose down and smoking heavily from both the oil and radiator, I ignored him and moved on to the next target. I passed him again in a turn a few minutes later, deadstick and stalling out. I never even got a late kill or assist on him, he somehow glided all the way back into friendly territory (it was a bish and we were over nit territory) and ditched it without getting bounced or shot up by a GV (he had to pass right over TT).

I watched the footage afterwards, I figured I'd just been wishfully thinking I'd hit the pilot when I'd hit the nose instead. But the footage shows, I was right. When you watch from the pilots POV, his entire world disappears in a cloud of sprites for a good second. And not a scratch to the pilot, just the radiator and oil line hits.

Not gonna name names or say it was "cheating" somehow, I just have to chalk it up as "one of those things"- but man, I want that armor in my Pony!

you didn't get many solid hits there, they were scattered too much to ensure a kill. i also don't think you were hitting the pilot, probably just behind him... hard luck :)

MMMMH! BOOBIES! Bouncy, bouncy, boobies.... Wait you posted something?

Seriously, looking at the film, you did not get a clean shot.  You hit the radiator, engine, left wing, and behind the pilot.  Half second of .50 burst that spread out you were lucky to get the engine and radiator.

109 engines and radiators are made of tissue paper and glass with this damage model.  You could sneeze and cause an oil leak, or fart loud enough and the radiator will blow it's top.  I love 109's cause if I look at them hard enough they cr@p oil, and pi$$ glycol.

Next time post film, not movie. Things may looks very differently from other points of view.
btw, as said before, your aim was bad, hits was scattered and you didnt even hit pilot most probably.

And I agree, looked like rounds were too scattered and most hit around and behind pilot

Hahah

I wish it wasn't so.

Always seems to be from impossibly long range .50 cal hits too.

Only thing you have to worry about in a 109 is .50cals. I love diving down on bombers and getting a pilot wound within the first three pings even though the only way a bullet could have hit me is if it went through the armored glass, yet there are no holes in it. Or my all time favorite is getting my radiator hit from someone who is d800 behind me.

I love it when I get radiator hits when I'm diving out under a set of buffs at 370mph. Hit from behind and above and my radiator blows out in a sing long distance ping.

:aok

I found only one hit sprite right over cockpit. Because of sprite's size there is impossible to say did it actually hit pilot or not. Others hits was all around - engine, both wings, fuselage behind cockpit.

I've staggered back with a pilot wound and all kinds of bits hanging off my aeroplane. I sometimes do it just so the guy won't get the kill:t or just for the fun of getting it back on the ground in that state, or to land kills.

In WW2 pilots often staggered back to base with shot to bits, wounded with a faltering engine. It's the luck of the draw.

As an aside, looking at the film, lookit at all those Shermans. What WAS going on?

i've flown a a sector and a half with a busted radiator in P47-D-11 and sector with half of both wings missing one radiator busted, anda  fuel tank hit in a 110. that one was funny.

I was only that high because every time I came in lower there were Ki-84s and Spixteens waiting for me at 20K

I was actually looking for buffs and leaving the low stuff pretty much alone, but that 109 and the other one that came streaking through (and ran without firing a shot) were all that was up there.

pilot wound?  You had one sprite on the cockpit with a single .50.

it was probably network lag.

I once hammered an A6M from nose to tail from 200 out with a 109a5.  Covered every pixel of the plane with hit sprites.  Cannon and MG.  No damage done.  Well, the rear wheel did fall off.     It looped around twice and got me because I toasted all my E going for that kill shot.

Sent it in askin "How?", never heard a response.  So it must have been lag.
