Title: New tubofan nacelle revealed today at the 787 roll out
Post by: Ripsnort on July 08, 2007, 07:06:21 PM
Pretty neat.

For the first time, the engine nacelles will have scalloped rear-edge chevrons. The chevrons, developed by the 787 nacelle manufacturer Goodrich as a result of research carried out by Boeing with GE Aviation and Rolls-Royce, will cut down greatly on the noise made by fast-moving air exiting the engine shearing against the external air. This GEnx engine, mounted on GE's 747 test aircraft, clearly shows the nacelle chevrons.

Neat looking design.  Thanks for the explanation as well, usually people say something and just leave it without further explanation.

Also what Bj said.:aok

How long until car spoilers show up with those same serrations in the back, based on this?

Depends, will it be for aesthetics or for performance?    Aesthetics I'll give it a few months, performance a few more months.

For quasi-speed, of course, like most spoilers.  :D

For the same reason I put a Type-R sticker on my RV, to make it go faster!

Considering the fact that the chevrons were placed there to reduce noise of air shearing at the aft end of the nacell, I can't see that it would be beneficial to place the same on car spoilers since the noise generated by a car spoiler would tend to be low enough to not be an issue in traffic. Normal traffic, that is.

Mark,

It doesn't have to actually add performance in order to end up being used as decoration on cars...  The exaggerated wings, chin spoilers, and huge exhaust tips are more than enough evidence.

I'm with nirvana...  If Boeing plays up those scallops at all in their ads (which they should), it's very possible that ricers will start taking hole punches to their huge rear spoiler wings in order to make them look scalloped just like the most modern airliner in the world.  For a lot of those guys, it's all about looking cool/fast, not about actually being fast.

Well said, Eagl, that's what I was going for.
