What's a cubit?
Title: are this skeletons real?
Post by: Saxman on July 09, 2007, 12:02:50 AM
Question is, was it GENUINELY a human femur, or was it the femur of some other animal that, as occurred with the Greeks, was mistakenly interpreted as belonging to a mythological creature (such as a giant)?

I love the part in the video where it says the Earth will stop rotating for a bit.  Top notch science, that.

Cubit = length of forearm from fingertip to elbow.  Between 17 and 23 inches.

I beleive that there were giants at one time. As for whether those are real or not, I'm not an expert, and can't give a very good opinion.

No doubt one of the earlier NBA players. :)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Basketball Jones, I got a Basketball Jones
Got a Basketball Jones, oh baby, oo-oo-oo

Yes, I am the victim of a Basketball Jones
Ever since I was a little baby, I always be dribblin'
In fac', I was de baddest dribbler in the whole neighborhood
Then one day, my mama bought me a basketball
And I loved that basketball
I took that basketball with me everywhere I went
That basketball was like a basketball to me

I even put that basketball underneath my pillow
Maybe that's why I can't sleep at night
I need help, ladies and gentlemens
I need someone to stand beside me
I need, I need someone to set a pick for me at the free-throw line of life
Someone I can pass to
Someone to hit the open man on the give-and-go
And not end up in the popcorn machine
So cheerleaders, help me out

{cheerleaders sing repeatedly...}
(Basketball Jones, I got a Basketball Jones)
(I got a Basketball Jones, oh baby, oo-oo-ooo)

{while Tyrone Shoelaces sings/speaks...}
Oh, that sounds so sweet
Sing it out
C'mon Coach Booty, Red Blazer, sing along with me
That be bad, honky
Yeah
I want everybody in the whole stadium to stand up and sing with us
Oh yeah, sing it out like you're proud
All right, everybody watchin' coast-to-coast, sing along with us
Bill Russell, sing along with us
Chick Hearn, sing along with us
Chris Schenkel, don't sing nothin'

Oh, it feels so good
Gimme the ball
I'll go one-on-one against the world, left-handed
I could stuff it from center court with my toes
I could jump on top of the backboard, take off a quarter, leave fifteen cents change I
could, I could dribble behind my back I got more moves than Ex-Lax I'm bad I could
dribble with my tongue Here I go down court, try to stop me You can't stop me 'cause I
got a Basketball Jones Here I come That's my hook shot with my eyebrow Yeah, I could
dunk it with my nose I'm, I'm bad as King Kong, gimme the ball I'm hot, I'm hot as...,
I'm hot as..., I'm hot as... uh Uh, uh, uh, uh"

I wonder if a human anatomy would support such a thingie. 36 feet?!?!?!?!
You would need a phenomenal blood pressure (highest blood pressure of a mammal = the Giraffe), and anyway, those humans that have become well big, all suffer from various health problems.
There was however, one countryman of mine, that was about 2.36 and a strong one too. Look at pics to see that 2.36 is actually a giant:

He was a healthy one, and a fisherman. He stopped being at sea because he was to big for the accommodation.

Angus, from the impressive photos it looks like your guy had Acromegaly, which is due to an overproduction of growth hormone from a benign pituitary gland tumour.  They have a high incidence of hypertension and diabetes, and sadly their life expectancy is generally about half normal because of cardiovascular complications.

I agree that human physiology wouldn't support a 16 ft body.  A giraffe's cardiovascular set up is adapted to such an extreme.  DNA extraction analysis would prove it a hoax.

Regards.

DNA?  From a sculpture that was commissioned to be "anatomically correct" and "to scale" from those reportedly found in the 1950's?

Not that easy.

Years ago folks were much smaller... case in fact, go to the Alamo and look at Davey (David) Crokett's clothes..... very small indeed.

Absolutely positively one of the best comedy routines EVER.

Its even better if you get to catch a video of cosby doing it.
THE perfect facial expressions only accentuate it.

One of my best parts. is when "Noah" is giving God a hard time about collecting the animals

::God:: "How long can you tread water? hehehehe"

Here is an audio only version of the routine

Hello, Lawrence....

Lawrence, Kansas is anyone there?

A Nuclear Tornado runs rampant across Kansas....

Next just add Darths voice with the mug of Al Gore with the Wiz of Oz music playing..Daaa taaa daa da daaa daaa...He's on a BIcycle like the Wicked Witch of the West and Kermit... It's hard being Green.... *note* You never see Al Gore and Kermit at the same time.... things that make you say Hmmmmm....

Darth = Al Gore: "Hhhhh... Come here my Pretty...Hhhhh"

Enter John Edwards pic flash combing his hair...: Auntie Em, Auntie Emm.....

Enter Nancy Pelosi: as a Flying Monkey, Sheehan and Ted Kennady... no dammm directions...but Ted can get off the ground and runs off a bridge into a River.... Nancy barks at the Moon and Sheehan...is still Sheehan.

I could really go on and on with the Best Thriller Movie of all times... but I have a Life.

:O

Mac

It sometimes takes a sick mind to place things in prespective...

Human average height was vastly varying up and down during the history. Climate, nutrition, diseases had all a long term impact on average human heights.
In the early middle ages, european people were considerably taller than their descendants in the late middle ages, the low point being in the 17th & 18th centuries

And if you decide to go into it deeper I beleive you will find that it also coincides with climate shifting.
Mainly the warming and cooling of the earth.

Doa  search on the "mini ice age"
There are several really good articles written on the subject

You're probably right there. But unlike the norm, the guy was very strong and fit!
Lived to be an old man.
We had a copy of the ring he used to wear, - I have normal fingers, or rather strong probably, - and I could fit some 3 through it!

Nice.... has all three pieces of that particular routine.

Bill Cosby one of the all time greats.  His "Bill Cosby is a Very Funny Fellow - Right! " is probably my favorite collection of his....... "Noah, Right", "Noah and the Neighbor", "You and Me Lord", "A Nut in Every Car" (about NYC subways), "Superman", "Hoof and Mouth", "Greasy Kids Stuff", "Pep Talk", "Karate", "Little Tiny Hairs", "Toss of the Coin"..... great stuff.

The feet are too small to support that much weight. I don't have the exact quote but physiogolists said back when manute Bol was in the NBA why he could not put on any more weight (and he was no more than 275 at 7'6"), and it was due to his body being unable to support that much bulk.  He'd have to have legs like an elephant to perform normally.
