Title: P-51 Overall Performance
Post by: DoLbY on July 09, 2007, 09:08:12 PM: I asked this in another topic but it was all the way on one of the backpages so figured might as well just make it a new topic. I've been stuck offline as most know, if not, It gas been about 6 months + since I played online so figured i'd ask here before I start playing online again, which hopefully is soon. So I can't really tell if the 51 performance has been upgraded or downgraded with the new patch. I read what the patch fixed up but I never really tell how it would effect certain planes.

So in short, has this new patch effected our beloved 51D in any postive or negative way?

Post by: Spatula on July 10, 2007, 12:32:40 AM: I haven't really noticed much myself. Some people say the F4-Us have benefited in sustained turn performance. I dont know if Kweassa has re-done his turn performance figures since 2.06. Or if anyone has any concrete data which can verify anyones claims of differences.

If it has changed, the change is extremely minor.

The rudder will do it. Exessive rudder in ANYTHING will send you falling like a rock.

Doubt they would pork the mustang anymore.. I mean c'mon the porked it on ah1-ah2 transfer.. Anymore than it may piss of the 31st! :D Seriously i know a few people that quit over mustang diffrences. From ah-ah2.. Won't mention 412th lol...:aok

I was flying a B in the TA the other night to get reaquainted with it and was amazed at how good it really was. Climbed a lot better than I remembered.

Post by: evenhaim on July 11, 2007, 01:32:34 PM: well dolby over the last few updates the 50 cals on the 50 seem to have more of a "drop" effect" not major but it has its effect, i do believe they also took a hit in turn perfermanace but other than that i dont think anythings gone wrong

Post by: Spatula on July 11, 2007, 04:55:25 PM: I've noticed something has changed in the gunnery model since 2.09. From tour 86 my hit% took a large drop by about 3% and continued to drop over the next couple of tours, its now stabilised. But something happened at our around tour 86 thats for sure. Whether it can attributed to anything other than my gunnery just going 'off' is unknown, but it seems odd to me.

Until then my hit% was steadily trending upwards of about 0.5% per tour, regular as clockwork. Then bam tour 85-86 and my hit% stats drop like a rock. I fly mostly P51-D and Tempy.

Anyone else noticed this?

Post by: DoLbY on July 12, 2007, 12:15:48 AM: Pretty interesting study there Spat. I know my hit % went up and down on both tours; the last one, not even sure but I could probably tell you how bad it'll be when I get back online next week though :D

EvenH - Turning effected for positive or negative? I was flying today (yes offline) and it seems to turn little bit better (experienting more with 1-3 down on flaps) but without anyone chasing me or vice versa, it is really hard to tell

Not me. My hit% was pretty much stable

Tour 84 11.90%
Tour 85 12.58%
Tour 86 12.23%
Tour 87 12.93%

No sudden hit. I did fly Tempest almost exclusively in fighter mode during those tours.

The most recent changes to the drag model hurt the P-51s. Once upon a time, the P-51s could easily out-turn the P-47s and give the 109s a very hard time. Not anymore. Today, the flaps generate a great deal of drag. In terms of reducing the turn radius, the flaps are somewhat helpful, but at a huge price in turn rate and air speed.

I tell people to avoid using more that 3 notches of flaps. If you find yourself using more, invariably you will find yourself in a serious energy deficit in a fighter with only marginal acceleration.

I strongly suggest keeping the P-51 fast, limiting flap use and concentrating on its greatest assets, speed and flawless high-speed handling.
