Title: Nvidia Control Panel
Post by: 715 on July 10, 2007, 08:45:44 PM
I just upgraded from a Radeon 9600XT to an XFX 7600GT (both AGP) for a bit of increase in performance.*  (This was only $95 after rebate and was as fast as I can go without upgrading my power supply.)

No matter which XFX or Nvidia drivers I install, the Nvidia control panel just hangs, constantly accessing the disk, never even showing itself.  The Classic interface works fine, and I can set everything I want.  Am I missing anything by ignoring the Nvidia Control Panel?

I'm using XP SP1.

Thanks.

* Yes I uninstalled the ATI drivers first.

Try using nTune instead. (http://www.nvidia.com/object/sysutility.html)

(presuming you're running an nVidia motherboard)

SP1 may be an issue.  I don't care for the Nvidia Control Panel.  I'd much rather have the classic properties set up.

The "new" control panel (*gag*vomit*choke*) runs on .NET architecture. You might not have that installed if you're only on SP1.

Unless you have a very specific problem doing so, I would suggest upgrading to SP2. It added quite a bit.

Just use the "classic" interface. Trust me. The new .NET interface sucks very much. It's not nearly as helpful and just hides things in different locations in difference seemingly-illogical places. In "classic" you get a menu on one side and you instantly know where everything is.

Thanks guys!  I think I'll stick with the classic control panel as you suggest.  I am, however, already stuck with .NET 1.1 from some mapping software I installed.

I do think I want to upgrade to SP2 for other reasons, but I can't seem to get Automatic Update to grab it without installing Windows Genuine Advantage*.  Without WGA installed, Automatic Update says SP2 is available for download, but exits without explanation as soon as I click "Download".

Is there any way to fool Automatic Update into grabbing SP2 without WGA or is resistance futile?  (Yes my copy of XP is perfectly legal.)

Thanks.                 -715

Nevermind.  Tonight Automatic Update presented SP2 without offering or insisting on WGA.

SP2 allows Nvidia Control panel to run, so that was the problem.  Control panel does, however, stink like you predicted, and crashes as well.  I'll stick with the classic interface.

Thanks.
