Ive never really paid attention to Christina Aguilera before; I dont think I could name one song of hers.
My wife, however, also is fan of anything to do with the 1940s era and knew that Id like this video. I have to admit, I love it. If you like 1940s music, womens fashion, etc. check out this YouTube video:

Classis, looks like a lot of inspiration from nose art?
Incidentally the girl on the right looks like this chick: http://www.myspace.com/genevieveakaviva
I can't figure out if it is.... (she does some kids music videos errr my son likes to watch.... :) )
-
To me, women's fashion and style peaked in the 40's. I love everything about that era; cars, style, music, and the airplanes!
-
Cool video, but don't listen to the lyrics. They are not 1940's at all.

Unlike many of the other recent pop singers to make it big, Aguilera can sing.

Born in NYC and grew up Pittsburgh. Tough childhood. She's done well. I prefer her as a brunette, and I tend to only like her more edgy songs rather than the puff pops.... but that song and vid was a nice stretch for her into something very different. Nice to see a performer not afraid to break with the Hollyweird cookie cutter recipe on how to do things.

besides other obvious distractions cough. cough. did anyone see the noscone of a p51 in the hanger scene?

No but I did notice Christina's blue uniform looked far more Luftwaffely-blue to me :)

I did change my mind. I wrote something really rude. I decided to delete it. Even though it is what I really thought, I know that I always regret being rude later. Lucky I was able to catch it within the edit time. :D

Blonde, brunette, ANYTHING'S better than the ghetto trash skank look she was sporting several years back.

The 1940's were definitely not the age of innocence. The references were a lot more subtle but no less risque.

Why is it that the recent wave of young, female artist starts off pretty cool, then think it`s cool to go into tramp mode?
Avril was a cute kid when she started and was talented. The grandkids were here last week watching the tube. Avril came on and, holy moly, it`s Madonna and Christina rolled into one.

I think the main reason why I never paid attention to Christina Aguilera was because I assumed that she was just another skanky/trampy/street/Bratz/kid bimbo. She may have been pretty, but not enough to make me ever do a double take or really notice. With 40s hair, clothing and lipstick, and a good fun twist on big band era music, however, she definitely deserves a double take. Its really surprising to me that hair style, clothing and general presentation could make a woman so much more attractive.
FYI, incase anyone didnt notice, Christina Aguilera is all 3 of the singers in the trio and plays many others in the video.
Incidentally, my wife collects and wears vintage clothing from the 40s 50s and 60s. She even wears hats from as far back as the 20s. Now theres a woman who turns my crank

They don't operate in a vacuum... well, between the ears some of them do... but are surrounded by agents and producers and PR flunkies.... and they all seem to believe trashy is what sells.
Hollyweird creates a mold, everyone conforms to it for sales, until someone strikes out and does their own thing..... becomes successful at it....and becomes the new mold for everyone else.
As to the trash thing.... I think it may be an effort to capitalize on P!nk's success at being edgy and rebellious..... P!nk can pull it off well, many of the others can't.

People look at the 1940s with rose tinted spectacles. Nostalgia is all very well and good, but sometimes I get the impression people genuinely make a case for a superiority of that particular era over today.
I can near on guarantee that if I had been alive in the 40s, I'd have never received any kind of education past 15 years old. After hopefully surviving a world war, I would have spent the rest of my days down a coal mine or in a steel factory, unless I was one of those allowed to continue a 'reserved occupation' throughout hostilities. The lack of health and safety regulations meant there would have been a high chance of injury at some point in my life, with a high risk of an incapacitating injury and maybe death. I would have married young, a child would probably have died due to the higher infant mortality rate. At some point, I would have succombed to bronchitis or pneumoconiosis and died in my early 60s like my grandfather.
But hey those 1940s looked cool! ;)
I think today has its own problems, but I honestly have to say that my quality of life, along with the range of opportunities open to me, is much higher than it would have been had I been the same age 60 years ago.

Can't agree with that really. What was often portrayed in the movies of the times was pretty tame, but the reality was far from it. Certainly the 1940's were tame by many of todays standards, but I think people have a very distorted view of the time based on 1950's television, and in some regards the 1950's were more "straight-laced" than the 1940's, and lame compared to the rebellious 1960's.
Come 1945 to 1947, you've got millions of people being discharged from the military, cash in pockets, G.I. Bill, looking to let loose for the first time in years, or in search of the same adrenalin high they got in combat conditions.
Prior to 1941, the nation was in a depression. During most of the war there was a war mentality and rationing and many women entering the workforce as the men went off to war. By 1945 onward, there was an economic boom, the roles of men and women in society had changed, what was considered proper behavior by men and women had changed (USO shows, red light districts, war brides, divorces had become much more common, women wearing "pants" of all things!, or converting used men's suits to office wear for themselves due to material shortages...). You had a great many country boys from simple towns introduced to very different parts of the world than they were accustomed to.
One example: what would have been a common USO show in the PTO or ETO featuring pretty girls in skimpy clothes could never have been televised or had pictures printed back in the states.
Another example: Military surplus equipment everywhere, especially jeeps and motorcycles. Returning vets would buy these items cheap and trick them out for racing and stunts. The Boozefighters of Hollister 1947 fame (which was really blown out of all proportion by the media of the day) were ex-Army vets, many pilots, who ran chopped up motorcycles. In fact, the modern day "biker" was born from WWII vets.... from the pin up girl paintings on war surplus bikes, tattoos, wearing leathers, drinking, fighting, riding fast, thrill seeking.
The lyrics of the song are a play on words, something that would not have been all that far from possibility back in war or post war America of the 1940's. Especially when bringing the theme of a 1940's USO show to the year 2007. And compared to many of the lyrics released in songs today... "Candyman" is pretty tame.

Cherry pop isn't a soda...
Panty drop isn't a game with a parachute and GI Joe...
Large Male Chicken isn't a large male chicken...
I did like the video and the song, though. Anyone know any good candyman schools?

LOL No
First I dont like the look of lipstick.
And second I hate the feeling of lips with lipstick.
I feel like Im kissing an open can of crisco lard
Then afterwards I feel like someone smeared Crisco on my lips and I spend the next two minutes trying to wipe the crap off. Which usually leaves the offending woman very offended. LOL
The things women will do to themselves for the sake of vanity I will never understand

It isnt just the lipstick I was talking about with that statement.
Its everything. The 14 different kinds of makeup (that some some women insist on wearing all at once)
Pulling hairs out one by one.
The gooping stuff on their eyelashes.
The seemingly never ending bout with haiir and hairstyles (I've yet to meet the woman who was satisfied with their hair) etc etc etc.
If your everage woman worried just half as much about the sizes of their arses as they did about their heads and faces. They wouldnt need to use 10% of the makup they use

Here's the link from the MTV site.. To me, even though it's smaller, it's better quality.

LoL from what I hear, though i wasn't there, the 1940s were NOT a time where reserved and restricted morals regined supreme.
The stories my Grandpa told me (428 sq RNZAF North Africa) usually left me with my mouth hanging open followed by a "you did what?!?!??!?"
Mechanics stealing avgas for their pet hot rod projects, breaking curfews nightly, boozing, "borrowing aircraft," and yes.. FORNICATION!!!!
Hell, I bet some of us would not be here today if it wasn't for the "cherry pop."
-
Heh, the RNZAF boys had a rep for 'borrowing' parts.
