Are there any small game hunters out there that use an air rifle?
I have killed 2 squirrels and 1 pigeon today using a .177 cal air rifle with wad cutter pellets (I think).
Currently I am shooting them off my deck, does anyone know of good baits to use to attract squirrels and pigeons.
Thanks

Never ate a pigeon. Do they taste good?

How do you cook your pigeon?
I prefer to shoot clay pigeons...

I guess they're not teaching shoot only what you will eat anymore.

Depending on how much power his particular air rifle puts out, they might not be enough. Squirrels are actually pretty tough little critters. I remember seeing a squirrel almost dead center in the pattern of my 12 GA shotgun blast in Alaska and running off like nothing happened. Or skinning squirrels and noticing just how many pellets hit it but didn't actually penetrate all the way through their tough hides.

In Korea we'd shoot Mountain Pidgeon, Pheasant, Rabbit and Sparrow with compressed air guns...
Cold as Hell, frozen Rice Paddies... Birds galore. Huge Pheasants, Chinesse Ring Necks. One Pheasant could feed 3 people. Wild and Great!
The Mountain Pidgeons are also great to eat.....
Sparrows are great too... get a bunch and peel them...bones and all are crunchy, add salt and pepper.....
Dog is good... but that's another story.....
:D

Two things,
1. Most states (if you are in the US) do not allow baiting animals and shooting them when they are eating. The bait pile must be removed before the season starts.
2. I don’t think squirrel season is open yet. I know states differ, but most are close. That would be poaching. I know that if it is your property you may kill them, but you should check with the local DNR. Also if you live in a city most hunting is forbidden.
If you want a real chalange try "Squirrel Fishing". Just do a google search and lets see you post some catches!
Good Luck,

Back when I lived in FL. I used to kill rabbits and crows in my mom's garden. There were usually dozens of squirrels around but I only killed them when they got into the attic. The squirrels always stayed out of the garden for some reason.
I used this cheap chinese knockoff of a crosman 160 in .22.

Most states... don't regulate pests or vermin..... meaning shoot on sight....depending on loca regs.(shooting pidgeons in New York w/ pellit gun might get ya life!)
-
what would be a better pellet to use besides a wad cutter?
edit:
I am also having trouble getting my scope zeroed, so I just took it off and am using the iron sights for now.
-
I was never able to down anything with a pellet gun. I have a pretty powerful one too.
-
Make sure your rings are nice and tight around the scope. It probably uses a dovetail attachment so make sure that is tight as well. You want the scope assembly (mount and rings) to mount as tightly to the gun as possible.
Also...
It's a pellet gun. Granted some can be very accurate and when I was little I would shoot cheerios with them. If it's a Daisy, Crosman low end WalMart special it's probably not going to be as accurate as "I" would like it to be. I'm pretty particular and often demand more accuracy than the gun is capable of...especially when it comes to BB and/or pellet guns.
The moral of the story is tighten all the optics down but don't expect so much that the gun can't deliver. It can get expensive doing that as you progress up the product lines :)

biggest critter I have killed with my .177 cal pellet gun was a male raccoon with a very nice head shot. ducks, doves, squirrels, rabbits rats and mice have all fallen victim to the great accuracy of my benjamin and now my gamo pellets guns. I shoot the excellent gamo manufactured magnum pointed pellets. they hit a ton and are very accurate.

I can't help but wonder if one calling themself ariansworld is mocking or self-indulging. Perhaps both?

I am thinking about going with the Tomahawk pointed hollow point, will that work good enough for squirrels?

Are squirrels in season where you are?

They are coming up onto my deck and being pests.

What do they do to pester you? I assume they're on the deck, which is outside, while you are inside. When you go outside they go away.
Are you sure you're not shooting them just because they're there and you can?

Why shouldn't he Golfer? It's his back yard and his deck.

Just because a Deer walks into the yard in the middle of July doesn't mean I can shoot it.

Hunting with and air rifle is illegal in Texas.
Also, unless it's a true nuisance animal on your property, if you kill it you ought to grill it.

I've never used them so I can't comment.

If you use a hollow point bullet, go for head shots. Gut shots with a hollow point are just plain nasty. Hit them in the shoulders or hips and half the meat is gone or inedible due to bone fragments.
*edit* Hollow point bullets do some serious, serious damage compared to some other types simply because the nose of the bullet expands very fast on impact.

Next time I am out, I will be picking some of these up.
I am hoping they wont tear my pellet trap up either.

Arian, The best ammo to use is whatever shoots best in your gun. The only way to determine that is to try out a bunch of different pellets and see what groups best.
As for power, wadcutters tend to lose energy very fast and are OK at short range but not much good at longer ranges. Diabolo (round nose) pellets tend to retain energy better than wadcutters or pointed pellets. These are usually the best from longer range shots.
Also, if you gun has enough power you can try some heavier pellets like the crosman premier heavy or JSB exact heavy. These will shoot slower but carry a bigger thump downrange.
If you are having accuracy problems make sure the scope is mounted tightly to the gun. On springers you often need a scope stop or a one piece mount. As the reverse recoil from the spring can cause the mount to "creep." Also, springers require an airgun scope. As the spring recoil can loosen the optics in a standard scope.
If the scope is fine, make sure the action is tight in the stock. If its a breakbarrel check to see that the barrel lockup is tight.
Some cheaper guns need a bit of work before they shoot well. Sometimes its just a matter of picking the right pellets.

Sounds like you folks need some of my home-made BBQ Sauce.
Squirrel....the OTHER white meat.

When I was a young prepubler pimply faced pudknocker like whitey, I used to be cruel to animals and shoot them with pellet guns. Back then I had zero problems taking down ferocious squirrels and rabbid pigeons with ordinary .177 pellets shot through the usual suspect crossman pump air rifles (ten pumps and not one more).
The thought of needing a "wadcutter" or "hollowpoint" :huh .177 projectile was, and is laughable to me.

You can if its causing damage to your property or crops, at least in rural areas. You may not want to in, say, Boulder, CO. They get downright testy if you do.:D

Speaking only for myself and not the squeaker, if they're on my fence or just passing through, I'll let em be. If they're nesting on my house or getting into my attic.......*PLINK*.......... good pigeon/squirrel.
Pigeon poop carries all sorts of nasty diseases and theres been more than one squirrel found carrying the plague. Not to mention the damage they can do the the structure.

I club'd the crap outta a pregnant oppossum in my tool shed with a 5 Iron.
Know why?
Cuz it was there, cuz it was ripping up my roof, cuz it was having babies in my attic that it didn't want to care for and left them crying year after year... crying and unfed until they couldn't cry no more and died.
With each swing of the club I talked to her... it took 35 minutes until she died. But I enjoyed every frikken minute of swinging on her.
I even thought of the "Dieing Quiver".

Check out the .177 titanium tip sabot round by daisey. Also, if you cant get good results with the sabot round, check out the fin stablized ultra penatrator depleted uranium dart pellet put out by Benjamin Co.
Good luck!

I live in downtown Oakland CA next to lake Merrit. On my property I have bird feeders, water gardens and bird watering stations. I've had to place screened covers over my water gardens to keep out raccoons. My birdfeeders are the squirrl proof type. But on occassion a squirrl gets an attitiude about it and damages or destroys the feeder. The raccoons sometimes destroy the recycling pump on my bird watering fountain along with digging up the garden from time to time.
Mr. Kalishnakof didn't just create a great assult rifle. He also created an olympic competition pellet pistol. Do a search for IZH46. One lever pump and it's bye bye anything up to a raccoon with a head shot in my yard. It also has a low sound profile and the neighbors never suspect a thing. They being typical Liberal Tree Hugging tardlings. They enjoy my little island of wildlife, but abhore my expalining how squirrls are fuzzy tailed rats that destroy PROPERTY and cost you money in repairs. Or that rocky raccoon is not the cute critter from walt disney, but is a dangerous creature that carries rabies and the plauge along with destroying property and harming or killing your pets. I had to go through the 21 shot Pasture rabies series to the stomach muscles when I was 7.
I can open my kitchen window and take out problem squirrls. Or stay up a bit later, then use my combat light into the night time back yard and eliminate raccoons caught dirty handed destroying my hard work. Funny how some squirrls will watch you put in new plants one day and then next morning dig them all up. Or raccoons come through in the night and destroy your water pump or tear up new plantings. Used to cost me upwards of $1000 a year some years. The IZH46 is less than $400 and kills them every time........:D
My property, my garden, my hard earned money wasted by tree rats and bushy tailed dirt dogs..........:t But now dead tree rats and dirt dogs yipppiiieeeee................ ..:aok

Try these,(http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/content/Item/22/81/65/i228165sn02.jpg)
Gamo Rocket pellets.
Good expansion and deep penetration (can I get in trouble for saying that to a minor? )
Also, if its pest control, please don't call it small game hunting. The two aren't synonymous.:aok
