Chinese food 'made from cardboard'

BEIJING, China (AP) -- Chopped cardboard, softened with an industrial chemical and flavored with fatty pork and powdered seasoning, is a main ingredient in batches of steamed buns sold in one Beijing neighborhood, state television said.

The report, aired late Wednesday on China Central Television, highlights the country's problems with food safety despite government efforts to improve the situation.

Baozi are a common snack in China, with an outer skin made from wheat or rice flour and a filling of sliced pork. Cooked by steaming in immense bamboo baskets, they are similar to but usually much bigger than the dumplings found on dim sum menus familiar to many Americans.

The hidden camera follows the man, whose face is not shown, into a ramshackle building where steamers are filled with the fluffy white buns, traditionally stuffed with minced pork.

The surroundings are filthy, with water puddles and piles of old furniture and cardboard on the ground.

"What's in the recipe?" the reporter asks. "Six to four," the man says.

"You mean 60 percent cardboard? What is the other 40 percent?" asks the reporter. "Fatty meat," the man replies.

The bun maker and his assistants then give a demonstration on how the product is made.

Squares of cardboard picked from the ground are first soaked to a pulp in a plastic basin of caustic soda -- a chemical base commonly used in manufacturing paper and soap -- then chopped into tiny morsels with a cleaver. Fatty pork and powdered seasoning are stirred in.

Soon, steaming servings of the buns appear on the screen. The reporter takes a bite.

"This baozi filling is kind of tough. Not much taste," he says. "Can other people taste the difference?"

"Most people can't. It fools the average person," the maker says. "I don't eat them myself."

The police eventually showed up and shut down the operation.

Meat from China? ok I suppose.. if you have a death wish

Don't try their toothpaste (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/2/story.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=10451117)

BEIJING - China has banned the use in toothpaste of a chemical linked to the recall of Chinese made products across the globe as it tries to reassure consumers its good are safe.

China's quality and inspection watchdog stressed that although there was no proof long-term use of toothpaste containing diethylene glycol -- an industrial solvent used in paint and antifreeze -- was harmful, it was still banning its use.

"Almost all of our toothpaste manufacturers no longer use diethylene glycol as an ingredient," it said in a statement posted on its website late on Wednesday.

The move is to "guarantee consumers' scientific use of toothpaste and also to avoid exporters suffering unnecessary losses", it added.

The ban takes effect immediately.

The chemical is similar to but much cheaper than glycerine, which is widely used as a syrup in medicines and toothpaste.

This week Spain became the latest country to take Chinese-made toothpaste off the shelves for containing diethylene glycol.

The United States, New Zealand, Singapore, Panama and several other Latin American and Caribbean countries have taken similar action.

Panama says at least 100 people died after taking cough syrup which contained diethylene glycol rather than the glycerine which was supposed to have been used.

Dunno how the Chinese get away with exporting so much toxic crap without suffering severe trade penalties. We sure as hell wouldn't be so lucky. Our exports, particularly our agriculture products have to be like Caesars wife.. beyond reproach. One slip-up, a trace residue of an animal remedy in exported meat for instance can result in trade barriers being slapped up and cost us big time in lost foreign earnings.

Gotta love it, cheap and dangerous products and massive pollution too. Good thing the Kyoto protocols give China (the world's second largest CO2 emitter) an exemption so that we can concentrate on what really needs to happen, namely returning America and its inhabitants to the pristine and natural state they existed in prior to European colonization. Oh, but instead of stone tools we'll have to use imported "stone look" plastic tools from China.

Sadly, you are probably correct there. The greed of the G8 nations in regard to China means that they will repeatedly turn a blind eye to a whole spectrum of abuses in China. They get up to everything from selling WMD components to madmen to harvesting organs from political prisoners, and yet we continue to accord them "most favored" status when it comes to trade.

The decision to hold the Olympics in Beijing, one of the most polluted (http://www.guardian.co.uk/china/story/0,,2128568,00.html) and unsuitable (http://www.sundaytimes.co.za/Sport/Article.aspx?id=506183)  venues for athletics on earth is a case in point. Even widespread reports of a "Cash for votes" scandal in the IOC haven't changed anything. And so we are about to hold the premeir international sporting events in possibly the most corrupt, polluted, and repressive place that was considered by the committee.

Predictably the Chinese are preparing for the Olympics with crackdowns. I'd forward some of the emails I'm getting from Christians in China, but I'm not eager to put them in greater danger. The following story from Compass gives the general flavor of what I'm hearing of late:

Mammon is a tough God to serve, he invariably consumes his worshippers.

If you live in a house built before 1978. You might want ot consider getting rid of that too.

Actually while Im sounding sarcastic. Im really only being half sarcastic

According to the EPA

"Although lead-based house paint has long since been taken off the market, children living in older homes are threatened by chipping or peeling lead paint, or excessive amounts of lead-contaminated dust. More than 80 percent of homes built before 1978 contain lead paint"

http://www.epa.gov/Region2/health/leadpoisoning.htm (http://www.epa.gov/Region2/health/leadpoisoning.htm)

While even low levels of lead can be dangerous. The primary danger lies in the dust as it is more easily ingested into the system full strength, where as chunks and chips of paint will likely pass through.
Most often associated with old windows.
A pretty obvious example that a lot of people don't think about is something like this.

Sliding the windows up and down creates friction. as the  window rubs back and forth in the sash it wears down the paint and primer previously applied.
If you ever have the chance and see the old style single glass thickness windows. Open the window and look at the sill. Odds are you will see what looks to be a lot of grime and dust.
Well guess where a lot of that dust came from.

Now the scenario goes like this.
Small child  goes by window.. places hands in the sill to try to pull himself up to look out  the window better.
Dust gets all over fingers.
Then little kids being little kids. place their fingers in their mouths thus ingesting the dust from their fingers.
Lead enters their system. yadda yadda etc etc.

If you have these kind of windows, and small children. replace them.
If you cant afford to replace them right away.  Either don't open them . Or if you must or really want to have windows open for fresh air.  Open them from the top only.

I had a kid that used to live two doors down from me who suffered a severe case of lead poisoning that caused SEVERE RETARDATION.
It was both sad and sickening to look at and hear as we could easily hear the kid two houses away when he went into his fits.

I wouldn't wish this watermelon on my worst enemy.
I beg you all. HEED my words.

There are ways to have it dealt with. but you MUST hire a professional who is both qualified and certified for both testing and abatement.
They sell test kits in the store. And they can be a good indicator.
But they are NOT a replacement for a professional.
If you read the instructions on such test kits it plainly states this.

I'm actually considering getting into "Lead  testing and Abatement"
Its gonna cost a small fortune for the training. But there ardent that many certified in it in my area.

Most house painters are NOT certified in testing or abatement/encapsulation. And in my area those that ardent are exempt from the lead laws. From sanding and prep work needed which may release lead dust and particles. Into the air and on the ground.

So remember. just cause you had your house painted. Doesn't mean its safe.

I heard a story on the Radio, here in the DC area, of a Foodlion grocery store that had to resort to spilling bleach on all the food they tossed into their dumpster in order to discourage a nearby Chinese restaurant from raiding the dumpster for their raw materials.

I don't eat chinese food unless it's homemade.  when we first emigrated to the united states my grandfather started a company cleaning grease filters.  when I was ten or so I would accompany him during the summer months.  the stuff I saw inside chinese restaurants was appalling.  they are a very thrifty people and I'll leave it at that.
