Title: Moving to Vancouver
Post by: Sparks on July 12, 2007, 08:05:27 PM
Just stuck my head back in the door to see if anyone here knows Vancouver.  My company has offered me a postion I can't afford to turn down so in autumn I'm moving to BC.
Can anyone give me the low down on the Greater Vancouver area for places to live.  I need to be in commuting distance of the airport but I'm not keen on downtown city living.  Been looking at the maps and Maple Ridge looks possibly do-able (1 hour drive??) using maybe the Albion ferry??
Looks like you need to pick your area to be out of the flood risk area.
Any suggestions ? Prefer small town /community type atmosphere, easy access to walking / outdoor stuff, don't mind up to an hour drive to work.
Any ideas appreciated

Hope they are paying you alot. Van is an expensive place to live.

Try Abbotsford. They also have a great airshow.

Yes, expensive, but very much like Seattle, cloudy, rainy, but has a HUGE allure as a great city!!

I have friends in Vancouver and White Rock, BC...they love it!

Good Luck!

Thanks Milo - I'll check it out.

68 - White Rock is one I have looked at but the info seems to suggest it now the upper end of expensive.  It is still on the list though.

Cloudy / rainy - I know - I'm from England - it's like home :D - green.

I leave near Vancouver, in South Delta.

Be carefull about looking at maps, a commute from Maple Ridge to Vancouver would be a minimum of an hour each way, on a good day. The commute isnt exactly pleasant.

I would look at North Vancouver, South Delta, and Richmond as well. Richmond is the city that has the airport.

As far as not wanting to live in Vancouver? I would check out the areas around False Creek 1st, and have a look around. There are definately advantages to living near work in the Lower Mainland area. Its actually very nice in a lot of parts of Vancouver. Have a look around, and dont rush into anything would be my advice, untill you get the lay of the land.

Thanks Squire,  more good info.

I'll look at False Creek.  As far as Richmond - I looked but it seems the whole city is in the flood risk area from the Fraser River.  Earthquakes you can't avoid but flooding is something I don't fancy and the area seems to have a history.  Nort Van looks interesting but the commute across twon I was wondering about.

Thanks for the input guys

If I remember right Vancouver has a problem with cougars, which for some reason or another aren't getting enough food and are now attacking people, and pets.  So watch out.

Did I remember right?

When I go up to see customers in Langley, Aldergrove (they just moved their office from Abbotsford) and Coquitlam I stay in Richmond. Traffic is a nightmare at times but the area is great to be in. I am planning on taking my wife back up there for a vacation before long.
