Title: I am too excited!
Post by: Denholm on July 12, 2007, 09:19:13 PM
I just found Vat-Sim. It supports FS 2004, and I'm not sure, yet I think FSX too. Has a huge multiplayer community. This is truly, As Real As it Gets.

ATCs (Over 100) use only real ATC terminologies to communicate with pilots, and the pilots are expected to respond correctly. There is no chatting allowed, after all, you don't hear pilots talking to each other (Hey, did you see that bugger? He almost rammed me... Heh heh heh)

To me, this is extremely realistic. I highly recommend anyone looking for a good FS 2004 or FSX community to check this out!

A buddy of mine is a controller for them.  The tools they use on the ATC side are very similar to what you would find in a TRACON or Center as capabilities go.  Pretty neat.

He was explaining the what seemed limitless add ons and programs they use for everything from radios and transponders to traffic/clearance info.  I used one service way back where you filed flight plans, were issued clearances and fit into the various ATC systems including controller handoffs and such.  It wasn't to the same scale Vatsim is/was at the time with members but I never bothered to get the programs that go along with Vatsim up and running.

No.

"Simulations of emergency situations are not forbidden on VATSIM.  However, air traffic controllers have the right to deny the simulation of an emergency and pilots must stop the emergency if requested to do so.  If the pilot is unable to stop the emergency, the pilot must log off the network.  It is strictly forbidden to simulate hijacking-situations. - (102a & 102d)"

So what do you do in this sim?  What's the point?  Tell me that at least you can ram other planes.

Real time air sim.    Take off, fly around, land.  Talk to ATC.

The work of flight without the enjoyment of seeing something!

If you like this sim, I’ve got another for you: it’s called Switchboard Operator.  Your screen is a big switchboard and you can drag wires around and plug them in!  Be careful, or you might get tangles!  Also, if you screw up and make the wrong connect the computer voice tells you it went through to the wrong number and requests that you try again!  If you’re feeling really ornery you can just start switching lines around at random.  Do it fast enough and the computer voice can’t even keep up!  Man!  There’s a laugh!  I can play this game all day long!

The darnedest thing happened yesterday that I can only say, "Noob" to it.

I was landing an A380-800 at KSEA (Seattle). Someone calls out he's on Final. Now, if you know anything about aviation, you know that the call for "Final" means that there is an airplane LINED UP with the runway and about to land. Some dumbo decided the place to be to see the action was on the runway this guy was landing on.

So, this guy taxis onto the active runway where the other pilot is on final and parks. The other pilot who called out final had to fly over him before he could land. Needless to say I had to do the same thing since I needed that long runway.

Anyways, that was "Noob" occasion #1. Occasion #2 happens with the pilot who called out final and was the first pilot who had to fly over the dumbo who taxied onto the runway. This pilot rolled to the end of the runway, taxied off to the right onto the taxiway, then turns and makes another right to head for the terminals. Anyways, since I was only 3NM behind him, I landed just as he got off the runway and managed to slow down faster than him. So I taxi off the runway and onto the same taxi-way making a right to go with the flow of traffic.

Well, while I'm making this right turn onto the taxi way, the other pilot who can clearly see me decides he has the right of way and runs right into me.

NOOB!!!:furious

Thought the whole point of that is that you follow the instructions of the controllers, who are supposed to be keeping knuckleheads from doing stuff like that.

There were no active controllers at Seattle, UNICOM was the go (122.800).

I have the FSX demo, and am loving it.  The controls are pretty complex, so I'm buying a new joystick with more buttons (I've had this logitech for two years) for when I buy the real thing.  Any tips for a learner?

If you really want a "real life" feel for flying, be it Aces High or FSX, I would recommend that you look into a CH Products set-up consisting of:
CH Fighterstick
CH Throttle
CH rudder peds
All can be found at http://www.provantage.com for the best prices. The three componants aren't cheap but it's really the best bang for the buck.

If that exceeds your budget, the next step down would be a Saitek X52...about half the cost of the CH gear. Trouble is, a twist stick rudder input doesn't give you the same "feel" as pedals. Saitek gear also seems to have problems, sooner or later, with joystick input in terms of "mushy" elevator and aileron input...i.e. X and Y axis.

Speaking as someone who's owned just about every joystick set-up there is, I'd highly suggest you spend the extra $$ and go with CH Products.

CH was the first thing that popped into my mind, and I think I'll go with it.

Denholm, tips about ways to memorize the places of buttons, there seems to be about a hundred different ones, not to mention ones that use shift or a combination of it.  I can fly alright, land alright, and take off alright.  I just can't remember which button does what alright (unless it's major, IE gear).

Usually I just use buttons L for lights and G for gears. Nothing else, the rest is mapped to my X52. This includes Rudders, Ailerons, Elevators, Flaps, Throttle, Trim, and a few more things I can't remember. The rest I just pretty much click around on in the cockpit since I have no use for mapping them to my keyboard or game controller.

The problem is that the areas of control are here and there, but not anything like real world ATC... You might have Local control at some fields, but no ground control., or approach and Departure control but no Center.

It all depends on time of day.  Because there are so few aircraft in the system the guys playing controller want to assign vectors and Altitude even if you are flying a STAR or SID or just shooting approaches at an uncontroled airfield.

Before the time I was 2 years old my father knew that ATC was the perfect job for me. I was a bossy little booger that never stopped talking.

True, however KLAX (LAX International) is a great Airport to be at around 4:00 Central (PM). Three days ago I was at LAX, they had Ground and Tower. Yesterday I was at LAX again and they had Tower and Control. So, like you said, hit and miss. Yet overall they DO have ground control, it just rarely pops up.

Couple of videos from last weekend:

Over 8 hours of action from last saturday's See Santa event at Rovaniemi airport in Finland - 237 arrivals, 37 departures (http://www.kolumbus.fi/fishu/trash/xmas07day1.wmv)

4 hours of action on the ground in the following sunday (http://www.kolumbus.fi/fishu/trash/xmas07day2.wmv)

4 hours of sunday in the radar (http://www.kolumbus.fi/fishu/trash/xmas07day2b.wmv)

Can you make in-cabin announcements?

You know, like:

"in preparation for landing please stow the tray into the seatback in front of you, and return the Stewardess to her up-right position"

That would be cool :)

LOL,

If I want to do that I go up to the control room and watch them in one of the sectors..... I work "Mids" at an ARTCC (ZAB), our facility handles an average of 5500 flights a day. It is kinda like watching some one using a hand pump to fill a swimming pool, lots of the same thing over and over.
