Arrows draw on sreen:

And firewalls it, exploding into the ship."

I started the first thread last year, and noticed how most of one's that watched it, would use the show as a basis for their "entire being in the MA".

Also, had you SEARCHED, you'd have known you were 2 weeks late.

That show is done by a guy on my LightWave 3D board, so I'm interested in it for two reasons.

But dammit, they really need to stop trying to teach ACM to 18 year-old morons.  We watch these shows, okay?  We understand some of this stuff, okay?  Don't talk down to us so much!

Why does every episode fail to assume we've learned from the last one?  They should be advancing the level of commentary.  Maybe get a Top Gun instructor to write the scripts or something.  Geez.

The enemy has 1300 bombers attacking your country.

You manage to get 100 suicide fighters into the air to take down as many enemy bombers as you can.

So, ummm, what do you do tomorrow when those 1200 bombers come back to attack you again?

Grand idea.

A pilot with a couple hours training = 2 Phennig

The act of destroying a perfectly good aircraft for little or no result = Priceless

Can't agree with that.

Once again they have wasted an episode on combat that was not a dogfight.  I realize they are trying to use actual people and that has to be dictating their shows, but there has to be some fighter pilots that actually did air to air combat in WWII in the European Theather around somewhere still.

They need to rename the series to "Computer Generated Repeats every 10 mins telling you what we already told you involving anything but air to air combat."

TV Guide would love it.

Tonights Dogfight unfortunately was the most boring I've seen to date.

The first 43 mins. were devoted to Kamakazi attacks on the destroyer laffe.

That was a little much for me.  Although interesting how can one keep interested when watching the same actions for 43 minutes?  When the FM2s and the F4U's came to the aid of the laffe it perked it up somewhat.

I turned it off at that point and hope in future episodes it gets more interesting.

I found the ramming 109s very interesting.  I think I'll go up a 109, empty all the guns but leave the MG at 60 rounds, and ram a bomber.  lol, I can't help but want to try it now.

Well, the story of the USS Laffey was a pleasant surprise. The Luftwaffe ramming unit story was uninteresting to me.

If we look at the Laffey story alone, this episode is a keeper. This fight is one of those special stories that stands out in US Naval history. Naval historian Samuel Elliot Morrison called the Laffey, "The ship that would not die." No other US ship survived such a concentrated kamikaze attack. This incident demonstrated the durability of the Sumner class DD as well as the fighting skills and damage control training of the American sailor.

Here's a copy of the After Action Report written by the Laffey's CO. It can be found, along with a lot of other interesting material, on the website dedicated to the Laffey. (http://www.laffey.org)

Commander Becton's decorations include the Navy Cross and THREE Silver Stars!

After the kamikaze attack had been beaten off, Becton received a message from the Task Force Commander asking if Laffey had survived the battle. Becton replied with one sentence...

"LAFFEY LAUGHS LAST."

Later, Admiral Moosbrugger (probably the most famous US Destroyer Group commanders) sent this message to the Laffey:

Its amazing how 2 Luftwaffe pilots survived ramming another airplane. the 1st one was lucky because he hit with his wing and not his fuselage.

I feel bad for the B24 and B17 pilots who had to go through that. :cry

If only they could do some over-used amateurish computer animation cliches... like having the planes constantly fly through the "camera"... cuz that would be exciting! ...and then they could also do the simulated camera shake when they did that, because IRL it would be so hard to hold the camera still when an aircraft was flying through you. That would be so awesome! :aok

In all seriousness, though... it's a show that has some nice touches, but overall it's 30 minutes too long, incessantly repetitive, and seems to be geared at 10-year-olds.

Too bad... they could really do something great with that subject matter. :(
Title: Dogfights.
Post by: The Fugitive on August 24, 2007, 12:16:47 PM
Ya, I'd be more interested in the shows if the stories were a bit more fleshed out. They can cut back on the computer graphics a bit, and get more info from "those who were there", with vintage photos and films.

all in all, it is entertaining

Post by: Treize69 on August 24, 2007, 12:29:16 PM
For those who aren't dweebish history and ACM afficianados, its a great show, my Dad and Grandmother both watch it whenever its on. Grandma wants to see the BoB and the Eagle Squadrons. Dad loves the Vietnam episodes.

Nice to see they're starting to use diaries and combat reports instead of exclusively interviews and memories. Opens up a lot of possibilities, especially as most of the really famous aces are no longer with us.
Title: Dogfights.
Post by: Nangleator on August 24, 2007, 12:49:05 PM
Yeah, it's a little beneath us.  Probably best to watch it with the sound off.

"Yeager is here.  The German is here.  Yeager needs to be a little higher.  He remembers his training and pulls back on his stick.  The maneuver works!"

And the camera shakes are driving me batty, too.  I'm on an animation board where one of the animators asked for comments and crits.  I *****ed a little about the camera shakes.  No response.  I also asked for Verner Voss, but I doubt I'm the reason he ended up on the show last night.

Nangle, you said it was a Lightwave BBS earlier... are you a LW user? If so, how do you like it?

I've been using ElectricImage Universe for several years now, finally convinced my superiors to spring for the full version of Maya. :)

I hear Lightwave is also a good program... curious to hear your thoughts.

Oh, and BTW... they really do do a pretty good job animating the dogfights, I just wish they'd drop the cliches. I'm really glad they're not going for the shaky zoom in-zoom out  Battlestar Galactica routine.

I've used LightWave since '95.  Love it like crazy.  I tried Maya for a month and couldn't wrap my head around it.

Seems like Maya is good if you've got coworkers helping.  LW seems better for a one-man shop.  Good modeler, funky character animation tools, but great native renderer.

Teaching myself Blender now.  Can't beat that price!

As for the show, I wish there were more and longer shots from in-cockpit.  They say "You're in the cockpit!"  and then they show all these zoomy external shots.

Post by: Krusty on August 24, 2007, 02:45:57 PM
I started in Electric Image, then moved to Lightwave. After that I moved to 3DSMax (my school changed their policy, forcing me to retake the class to relearn it).

This was a while back, but from memory, Electric Image had a more intuitive NURBS system. However, the system was flawed. It would work volumetrically, which was nice, but if you tried to export and import things, or tesselate them, you could run into irreparable problems with missing faces or errors.

Didn't see as many of those in Lightwave. Lightwave seemed different, but seemed like it had better surfacing tools. Easier to use and understand.

3DS has worse surface tools. That is, they're more powerful, but less intuitive and harder to get "what I want" when compared to the other software. I really like the animation control better than the other two, however. Much more control. I've gotten into the skeletal system and IK as well and I hear it handles them better than LW or EI (but, I confess I did not get as far in either so can't say from my own experience).
