I laughed up a little beer thru my nose watching the CNN reporters look of total horror as he reported this.
http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2007/07/14/africa/ME-GEN-Iraq.php
Iraq president Nouri al-Maliki said today US troops were "embarrassing" his govt by "..violating human rights.." and treating his country like an "experiment in a U.S. lab", adding "they can leave anytime they want".
I hope W is wearing his .gov NASA diaper when he reads this.
X-mas just came early for the Dems, the drama to follow should be sadly entertaining.
Edit:
It was One of his top aides who said "embarrassing ", my bad. The CNN dude said "Nouri al-Maliki" govt, I thought he said Nouri al-Maliki then I read the article. It was Nouri al-Maliki who said US troops could leave.
-
It was here on Yahoo's news, too:http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070714/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq
Let's follow this, see what happens in the next few days.

Xmas for the Dems?
I call it Xmas fot the Prez if he handles it right.
"My fellow Americans. Now that the democratically elected Iraqi government has expressed its full confidence in itself to handle the present situation, our victory has been achieved.
I have asked our commanders to begin the phased withdrawl of our military from the sovereign nation of Iraq." GW Bush
-
that's terrible news, now how can comrade Clinton and the democrats win in 08?
-
LOL @ Holden....great post
Be interesting to see the next few weeks how this is handled. Either way they I think Pres. Bush will take a beating. If he WAS to pull out or begin the pull out they'll beat him up for not doing it sooner....if he doesn't they'll definatley hammer him.
Poor guys is in a no win spot I think.

If the Iraqi government is sure their security forces are up to the task, then by all means, lets bring our boys and girls home. :)

Yeah, it's completely embarrassing the way American troops are dieing for their country.

IF Bush would have come out and said that BEFORE Al-Maliki, then yes, score one for GWB.
However, It just looks like a knee-jerk, reaction statement, Since it came out second-hand. Plus, the big hooplah now will be about the pace of the 'phased withdrawal'.
If I was to wager, I'd say that Al-Maliki will become more and more Anti-U.S. as we withdraw our troops, and will start *****ing if we don't do it soon.

Yeah just 2 days ago the dems were calling for a phased withdrawal. But reps said they were traitors and losers. But now Bush would be a hero for the same thing? You guys confuse me:)

One of them over there right now is my own son. He will always be my boy.
I was speaking as a parent of one of those boys and girls.

Two days ago, we hadn't achieved victory. :p

Even if we pull out before the job is finished we can support Iraq with equipment and training against Iran when Iran steps up their attacks. Letting them fight each other keeps them from car bombing our restaurants and shooting up our shopping malls at least for a while. Afraid the democrats just aren't going to profit from an early withdrawal.

silat, I think the comment on traitors and losers was meant for an EARLY withdrawal. Your comment is incomplete. You play'n politics?

Are you implying that the war was started because we want better control of the oil there? If so, then why would we "take the oil with us". Practically I do not see thing happening. But you know this, so don't you think we'll still leave anyways once the new saddam free government is stable? An unstable govt is no better than a sadam controlled government.
I hope I worded this correctly. :)

While I understand why you posted that, there was no disrespect intended in Elfies post. FWIW I think both of you are showing respect for the troops.

It's not too difficult to figure out from a regional standpoint.
The US has made it abundantly clear that they will be withdrawing from Iraq in the near future (in '08 probably) regardless of what the situation is over there. When that happens a power vacuum will be created, which the Shi 'ite majority behind Al-Maliki's government wants filled by their co-religionists in Iran. The next to last thing they would want is the surrounding Sunni states backing the creation of another Sunni dominated government. So they are quietly working towards the end of creating a second Shi 'ite state in the region with a rather obvious puppet master.
Or as one wry caption on another site recently put it:
I'm counting on this guy to set up my client state for me[/i]

Thanks. :)
This is his second tour in Iraq. When he called me just before leaving the first time to tell me he was leaving to catch his flight, I cried because I feared for his safety. Yet at the same time I was proud of him. When he finally got home he called to say he was home safe with his wife and daughters. I cried again after he hung up only this time the tears were brought on by a sense of relief and joy that my prayers to God for his safe return had been answered.
When he left again this time, things were no different, I again cried and was even more proud of the man he is becoming. I suspect that when he does make it home this time that I will cry again for the very same reasons as last time.
If he has to serve a third tour I suspect I won't have a single hair left on my head that ISN"T grey. :p

John let me try to explain this better.
He will always be my boy even though he is a man now. When I see him, I don't just see the man he has become. I also see the little boy that he once was, full of innocence and joy. In this same sense, my daughters will also forever be my girls. :)
As a parent I don't just see men and women over there, I see other parents boys and girls as well.
Hope that made more sense than the post I quoted. :)

I sure hope that was tongue in cheek for I am here as I type and there is nothing embarrassing about what we are doing and dieing for. What I find embarrassing are armchair quarterbacks who've never served a day in their lives telling me anything about our military.

During the 8-year war between Iran and Iraq Al-Maliki fled from Iraq to Iran - like a million other iraqi shi ites.
He was recruited by the iranian Pasdaran, the Revolutionary Guards, and became a member of this guard-unit of the iranian military forces.
Like german communists in WW2, wo were cooperating with soviet military, Al Maliky then was used for propaganda operations on the front - trying to convince iraqi shi ite soldiers to lay down their wepons or by interrogating iraqi POW´s in order to defect to the iraqi shi ite forces fighting on iranian side.
When in Iraq the new democratic election system was introduced more than 95% the iraqi shi ites voted like they were ordered by their spiritual leader Grand-Ajatollah Sistani (an iranian, by the way).
And because the shi ites are 60% of the iraqis they got the majority in the parliament. Then it was also a wish of Sistani and the mullahs in Iran that Al Maliki should be the president of Iraq - and so he became it.
His first visit was to Iran where he thanked President Ahmadinedjad for the iranian help and blamed the foreign occupation forces for the problems in Iraq.
That was years ago and shown in TV - even western TV.
During the next year Al Maliki systematicly kicked out sunnite high ranking officers out of the new iraqi army and police, replacing them with shi ites. So this new "iraqi" army/police becomes a shi ite instruments, which is also cooperating with the shi ite militias - like in Basra or like during the execution of Saddam, where one of the shi ite militias replaced the execution team and performed the hanging of Saddam.
If the execution file still exists in youtube you can hear the executioners of Saddam, how they blame him for the death of of one shi ite Ajatollah and kill him before he could finish his prayer.
So why anyone should be surprised with the actual behavior of Al Maliki ?
This all happens since he was made president.

Yeah, théy're ready for us to leave. So the country can descend into lawless genocide that f*****s like that make plenty of money on. (See Somalia) My prayers for all of our servicemen that have to slog it out in that corrupt, unthankful, undeserving s***hole of a country.
