Title: New vid card prob and can't run benchmarks
Post by: DmdFiat on July 14, 2007, 08:15:13 PM
Hi I've been having short freezes in MA ( even after disabling a buch of stuff) so I decided to test my Radeon 1950 pro. I tried two benchmark tests 3DMark and Video card stability test. Both of them puke at the start. Window system errors.
I updated to the vc latest driver with no change. The catalist center can't even try to overclock the card which is running at defaults.
Everything else i do with the pc is fine.

Has any1 seen similar issues?

Pc specs below.

It sounds like a video card problem (hardware/software). I can't help much further than to comfirm that, as I've never dealt with that before (and don't know what drivers to suggest)

P.S. Latest drivers are often a no-no. Latest drivers often carry the latest bugs. You need to ask Skuzzy for which set he prefers best for ATI.

do you have skins enabled? the skin pack is something like 2.3meg, which is taking up RAM. best thing to do is delete all the skins you dont use. try to get down to like 100-150 skins in your skins folder. made a big difference for me.
as far as problems out of game im not sure. do you overclock? if so, your OC may be unstable.most benchies require newest drivers to work properly, however AH  likes older drivers.

TY.
I disabled other planes' skins and it made a lil difference. I also disabled auto download of skins. The bulk of the problem is still there. It also gets much worse in furballs but my fps never drops below 40. My max is 60, due to my flatscreen monitor.

But why can't I run 3DMark and others?

When was the last time the operating system was reinstalled?  Anytime i make hardware changes (especially when changing from nvidia to ati video cards ) i reinstall XP. I know you havent mentioned what brand your old video card was , so   i added that just incase.

Heat , IRQ sharing and drivers could also be to blame , make sure to use driver cleaner when changing drivers , and don't be afraid to try different ones  . Pc power /cooling psu's are top of the line so i wouldn't think it would be a psu issue , but... you could have just gotten a bad card .    Good luck

I don't think you have to reinstall your OS.

Nor do I think just changing game settings will fix it.

It's a driver or hardware problem, if you can't run benchmark programs. That means something (outside of AH) is not working properly.
