Saw it on another board. A P51D Mustang painted as the 361st FG Lou IV went down with the loss of the pilot.
It was scheduled to be at the Mustangs and legends gathering in September.

Yeah , this is something to joke about . WTF

:( Shame.

That is sad to hear. Do they know what happened yet?

The numbers of original warbirds continue to dwindle...so we now face the delimma, "Should we just preserve them, or fly them and risk losing a valuable piece of history?"
I vote for flying them. It's what the planes were built to do, and my heart aches when I see a plane on static display.

This is why kids shouldn't be allowed to play this game.
This Dolt gets the Dee Da Dee Award of the month !:aok

Museums have static displays, so there fortunately will always be at least static real aircraft for the world to see. With that covered, I think it is also good to have ones flying, and even when possible (such as with the Collings Foundation and places like that), for people to take rides on.

The number of warbirds continues to grow. The money going into restoring those birds and the work that is being done is amazing. Where there were maybe 6 Spits flying around the time of the B of B film there are upwards of 50 flying now with more on the way.
There's always a risk in flying them, but if folks want to take the time and money to make it go, I'm all for it.
Flyable 38s have doubled in the last few months. There are more 17s on the way. 20 years ago no one would have considered the idea of an actual 109E flying and there are 2 flying now with more on the way.
There are at least 2 190s being rebuilt to flight and I'm not talking Flugwerke reproductions. There is talk of a 262 with original engines getting back in the air.
There will come a time where the numbers will decline again, but it's not now.

If original planes are flyable, I say fly 'em. We can fill museums with replicas.

Ditto

Nah, not replicas -- the real planes -- but there are real planes that are owned by people or museums that are not flyable, and those are what I'd prefer for static displays. I want my chance to see a real one, not a replica! :)

my condolences for the pilot and to his family!
-
what a tragedy.
while the loss of the pilot is indeed lamentable we may all take comfort in the knowledge that he died doing something he loved, on the whole there are far worse ways to pass. I wish peace to those who hold him dear.
the pilot as an individual is irreplaceable but the plane will probably be rebuilt.
there is a growing global enterprise in the restoration and complete from the wheels up fabrication of 1940's aircraft. these designs represent the epitome of piston powered aviation technology and these graceful forms will be with us for as long as there is humanity.
may that airframe fly again soon.
-
Well, the pilot died doing what i bet they loved more than anything else. They know the risks and do it willingly. My hat is off to those to those who ensure we can see these fantastic machines flying - the restorers, the financers, the collectors, the organisers, the pilots. If it can fly, let it. If it cant, display it.
Sadly, a family now mourns.
-
at least he died doing what he loved (hopefully);)
-
Bodhi has my dream plane, a f4u-4 that he is restoring. man that must be nice
to the pilot that lost his life. But now he gets to fly that pony in the sky for eternity what could be greater than that.
-
Kinda like when we lost Jeff Ethell- if he had to go, its probably the way he would have wanted.
-
Carroll Shelby hates to see his cars in museums or hauled around to car shows on a trailer. He said he built them to be DRIVEN. I feel the same way about warbirds, if they are airworthy they should be flown we already have plenty of static displays.

NTSB shows no accident (fatal or otherwise) since 2005. Last P-51 fatality was May 29 ,2004...NTSB July 2007 Aviation Accidents (http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/AccList.asp?month=7&year=2007)

There are more warbirds flying now than 20 yrs ago.
As for grounding them, I have an idea. You put up $1 - $6 million to restore one, then have someone tell you can't fly it...
Enough of that,
to Mr. McKessin. Clear Skies and GodSpeed!

News reports it was the guys first solo in a P-51.

That is very sad. In hope preserve the history of the WWII gen planes for my children (whenever I have some;only 26:aok ) I have sign up to assist in the reserection of a B17 being restored at a small local airfeild. Heres a little more info:
Project B17 (http:// http://www.b17project.com )

So was the P-51 a two seat trainer or was the guy working with an instructor in another plane? I know that the pony requires a special rating to fly as PIC...
-
Poor guy, I hope his family was prepared for the eventuality. The instructor probably is having a rough time as well.
I remember when Scat VII went down here in Indiana in 2003 and we lost James Shuttleworth. I had met and talked to him on several occasions. He was a great guy. Scat VII was an actual warbird that had been restored to it's WWII colors.
I say fly them, but remember..
When we are out of Mustangs, we will be out of Fighters.

You missed it Golfer. It went right over the top. He was tongue in cheek with that one, quoting a well known statement.
That's ok though. Fencer is harmless :)

I've been a little frazzled today. Thanks Dan :)
