Title: How I heard of AH
Post by: Rich46yo on July 17, 2007, 05:32:34 PM
I was on a phone line with a techie for my Power Spec computer. He/You told me about the gaming computer you put together and when I asked what games you play he/you told me you played only one, Aces High.

So now I'm hooked as well. And you know I have it bad cause I just spent my two days off playing the thing.

I heard about it from my Father. He'd already been playing for a few years when I went to visit he & my Mom a few summers ago.  Played on his computer during my visit.  Once I returned home I loaded it onto our computer ~ hubby & I (and 3 sons) have been hooked ever since. :D

Thanks Dad;) Lots of fun ~ and I'm always glad to see you in here.:)

saw a commercial on the military channel

downloaded it, bought a twisty stick the next day, practiced offline for 2 weeks while watermelon chatting on the boards, gave the kids all the console game systems, and the rest is history.

Military channel commercial. Downloaded it, disliked it greatly at first, but then I met Kazaa, LOVED his big missions, and decided to stay.

Red Baron 3D was terminally ill.

I went cruising the internet for another WW1 sim and bumped into Aces High by accident.

Been here ever since.

Saw it on military channel. Looked cool, but I was pretty skeptical. The free trial seemed fair enough, so I decided to download it. I remember upping  B-17's, losing the drones, and trying to bomb at 500ft. Smokey23 was real friendly and helped me out with my first day. He invited me into the Lynchmob, and I've been there ever since.

AW for me.. Looked up my old squad And what did i see..

Shawk
Hondo
Ogie
Steve
Coors

Some of my old AW buddies! I downloaded the game as fast as i could. Flew off line for a day our two learned to take off and did some very basic circles and loops. My first sortie in main low and behold i found shawk all alone with 3 spits on his 6. No vox our skill i helped him out and got one kill with all my ammo. Shawk said nice kill and its great to have you back. Within 5 mins of flight time i was back in my old squad (:

This is my order of addiction..

AW
WW2onlie
Bf1942
AH

The one game for me is AH and i plan on being around for some time to come.....

Military Chanell.

I always was a WWII buff..

Thought it sounded like fun, I had an old logitek extreme from many years ago when I bought Jane's F-15 sim.

Two week free trial.....

Didnt wait for the two weeks to expire.

Addicted ever since....

Like a lot of people here, I was part of the AW community.  Tried this game out when it was an open beta.  I remember my first night--loving how the control surfaces actually moved.  lol.

I ran across a reference to the open beta Aces High (the original) while it was  running on some forum/BBS (may have been combatsim.com).  I was playing EAW @ the time and had ventured online with that game and had dabbled in Warbirds but the cost kept me away (poor college student).  Signed up for the beta played for several months and subscribed when the game went pay and haven't looked back since.

Milatary Channel, and this seems to be where most of us found it so I'd say it's deffintly been a good investment for HTC to run commercials on the Milatary Channel.

I ran across a "SIMCADE" in a mall one day. It was a bunch of hydraulic powered cockpits with a stick, throttle, and pedals and a monitor. They used Aces High and it cost about $45 for 20-30 minutes. I was pretty stoked when they told me I could play online for $30 a month.

I played Red Baron 3D as well S! Still have it.  Was hoping to find a WW1 Sim but the only thing i came across was Aces High and il2 and at that time i couldn’t play il2 on my old Computer, been addicted ever since.

Still miss the old Red Baron days where you would tear you wings of just by diving and jump out without a parachute.

Greetings,

1994ish, was playing Aces over Europe with a friend's computer in Camp Doha.  Read PC magazine about online multiplayer recrations of historical engagements.  He had full TM set up and I was hooked.

When I got back to states did search, found Air Warrior Beta.  Really appreciated flying for free!  Then went to Gamestorm, then it died.

Found this place couple of years later with a random Google search.  I ain't leaving again!

Regards,

In '96 I was reading a PC magazine after getting my first PC.  They were talking about AW, which was on AOL and Compuserve at the time.  The article said something about reading the text channel and low bogies and then the writer got bounced, realizing too late he was the subject of the text discussion.  Now that sounded cool to me and since  I had subscriptions to both AOL and Compuserve I logged on through AOL.  I was hooked.

I went from AWI on AOL to AWII on Gamestorm to AWIII until the updates quit coming and the rumour was it would close the next month.  Then everyone started bailing for this new game, Aces High.  I bailed 1 month before EA shut down AWIII ('01) and have been here ever since.

Westy posted some screen shots from AH beta on an AW forum.........

by early 2001 AW FR was a ghost town and AW scenarios had all but died..........

Then I later learnt that AH was to have an La7 (something I had been hoping BB would add to AW ).............

Tilt first appeared in Tour 14 yet I know I flew the AH La5FN for a few weeks prior to the La7 being introduced............. probably during a free trial period or as a number.

Drunky got me hooked on AHII.  Up to that point I never played any online games but I did fly on Flight Sim.

I have always liked WWII history specially the Naval history (No wonder I’m in a Naval squad :lol).

When I came on we had a lot more maps/bigger ones & we did not have E.W.A.-Green, M.W.A.-Purple, L.W.A.-Orange, or L.W.A.-Blue.

I have grown to like the AvA & SEA alot more rather then the same ‘ol, same ‘ol that is the MA’s.

Back in about 6th grade I was searching around fileplanet for free games and came upon AH1 and played it Offline for about 2 days got bored and forgot about it. Then came 8th grade near the end of school and I needed a game to play. So I look at fileplanet and look at AH2. Soon there after I tryout online play with the free trial and get hooked. I put on my pug face smile to my father and he gives in and starts to pay for me. About 6 months later I finally get a joystick sent to me for Christmas. And I have been stoked ever since. Noting: I will be entering my junior year. And man am I bored to write this much. :o

I was actually looking for AIR WARRIOR to see if it was still around or if a new version cam out. I missed that game ever since gamestorm stopped running it. and after 8 years of withdraws playing first person shooters I am finally home back in the air.

To be precise I found it in yahoo searching for AIR WARRIOR, and ACES HIGH was under one of the pretexes. checked it out. flew the first day with a mouse and was a gunner for FORTRESS LOL. bought a stick next day and I dont think ive missed a day of play since. This game keeps me from going out and spending to much money, which I am known to do.

I really enjoy the game, used to play CFS3 on line which is nothing compared to AH.  As for the boards, I've picked up a lot of good info in the
"Help and Training" and "Hardware and Software" forums. I find the
"General Discussion" forum is fun to read and  usually pretty funny.

i remember it was a cold boring day in rl, my ex and i were watchin military channel and seen it, he ran in, down loaded it and flew with a mouse for bout 10 mins and next thing i know (keep in mind it was like 12am) we were wakin up the kids and puttin them in the truck on the way to meijers for a joystick....45 mins away...come home and he play'd around for hours. he eventually made the mistake of leavin the game up on the desktop and i sat down and started messing around with it, i couldnt figure out how to take off in a plane but was able to drive a tank around but couldnt figure out how to shoot the damn thing, i shortly discovered how to take off in a plane and then i shot down my first red guy, i was hooked..not knowin how to land if i ran out of ammo i would just bail and get a new plane hehe...then i learned that i could belly land...nothin like comin it at 400 mph and skiddin across the ground on ur belly till u came to a stop and towered...then HTC changed it and forced me to learn how to drop my gear and land with it in tact and not crash while landing. took me bout a year and half before i finally learned to taxi and rearm and then reup again without driving my plane into something or tipping it side ways ripping my wings off. then i ran into kermit..well...here i am, almost 3 years later :)

Thats the same way I was forced to learn how to land, when HTC changed it to where if you landed with your gear up over around 160mph you died.  It was fun when you could land with your gear up over 400mph and skid from one end of the runway to the other:D .

I actually downloaded the demo a long lomg time ago. I played it single player and thought.. this game sucks. I mean who wants to chase a bunch of crappy looking planes around in a circle.. :lol  (was well b4 the graphics updates)

It wasn't until quite some time later like maybe a year or so that I saw the commercials on the history or military channel and decided to give the game a try. Amazed was I to find out that it was the same crappy game I had downloaded so long ago not realizing there was more too it than flying in circles.

I was online one day in April 2004,looking for information about the Bf 109,when I came across a site ran by someone called Tom Philo.

The site had the required info on the 109,but it also had a link to Aces High,I downloaded the Game and have never looked back.

Tom Philo used to fly Aces High under the handle JG26 as a Rook I think,is he still here?I would like to thank him for introducing me to the online Flight sim world.

So now I'm hooked as well. And you know I have it bad cause I just spent my two days off playing the thing.

Who was the fella you were talking about, I mean his ingame name?

I learned of ACES HIGH while in my ‘early’ WARBIRD career [when HiTECH and company left WB].  Over the past 10 years and after several computer system upgrades, I began ACES HIGH, when my Virtual Squadron [475th FG] changed over to ACES HIGH in Dec. 2006.

Prior to Internet set up 1998, I began my World War II gaming with several boxed and Board games including:
COMMADOR 64/128: USAAF (Text game).

WINDOWS 95:
SIERA Series (AOE, AOTP, RED BARON)
SILENT SERVICE
DESTROYER etc.

WINDOWS 95 (1st Internet set up), 98, & XP:
WARBIRDS II 2.0 & III {Mar. 1998 until Nov. 2006}
Dabbling briefly with ACES HIGH, AIR WARRIORS, WWIIOnLine, & etc.
ACES HIGH {since Dec. 2006}

I read about it on an Italian videogame magazine. There was an article about online flight sims, Aces High was the one that impressed me more. So, being a big aviation fanatic and being eager to finally fight some real opponent, I finally downloaded it. I spent about three years playing in H2H, on and off, finally, in December 2005, I subscribed. I'm hooked for life. :)

Saw an article in a British magazine back in July 2000. Downloaded it and was interested enough to shell out the $30 subscription fee - it was an amazing experience given that I'd never seen an online flight sim before.
